Question- how the hell did that trader in War Stories know about Simon and River being on board Serenity?

MAL: Just the ones I'm better than."

"MAL: Gotta say, doctor, your talent for alienatin' folk is near miraculous.
SIMON: Yes, I'm very proud."

Surely the guy was referring to the Ariel raid? It's probably part of the rep (gossip, not solid) of the Serenity crew by then. The 'pair' is the big pair of cohones they must have for pulling such a caper.

Mal: "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so... very... pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."

I agree with Reflexive. What i got out of that scene was he (the fence) is refering to the pair (of Balls) Mal has for going against a government run facility.
Of note too is Wash's chuckle. If he was referring to River and Simon he would have had a different response not like he was reacting to a compliment. Also Mal's reply about the stuff legends are made of i beleive is in regards to their rep.

Mal: "Well lady, I must say...you're my kinda stupid."

Have to agree. It is unclear that Boyles knew anything about River and Simon. But it is clear he knew what he was trading hard cash for. And where it came from.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

My assumption was he was talkin' about the Tams...
My mistake.

since it refers to my job, i have to be a nerd here and say that the supplies that mal and company took from the hospital are not very expensive items. of course, it does not matter since it is the implication that these things are expensive that matters, but it was funny to me since i work with supplies like that almost every day. i assume the props people just used whatever they could find or what looks good on camera.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Definitely not talking about Simon & River. Reflexive is right in that the pair the man is referring to is the cohones that Mal must be sporting to hit an Alliance hospital on a Core World and taking the loot.

I thought the idea was that it's a matter of supply and demand. That is, items that would be easily replacable on Ariel are at a premium out on the border worlds where such things are not readily, if at all, available.

true, but simon makes a point of saying how much those items will cost and in the "robin hood" spirit of the crew, i cannot imagine that they would charge way over the normal cost of such items. simon even says that he will tell them what is worth taking. some of the items that they take are non-perishable things like plastic containers and bottles, not actual medicine.

anyway, i am not trying to make a point, i just thought it was amusing.

I'm really not trying to proove anything either, and I admit I didn't take a close look at what they were taking. I was just thinking of an analogy to the food concentrates they stole and sold in Serenity. Value in the core would be negligible, on Whitefall those bars could mean life instead of death. Which is not to say that the gang charged anything more than market value--after all, with stolen goods it's all profit (less their expenses, of course).
