You may have noticed traffic slowing to a crawl at the new site. It's the old slashdot effect.

They seem to be surviving, but not exactly with flying colors.

Seems to have been a rather underhanded but effective ploy by a user named "MyOrangeHat" to boost his Browncoat points (which you can get by referring people to the movie site). The link he submitted to Slashdot was a "referral" link with his userid in it.

If you go look at the user rankings on the official site right now, MyOrangeHat is at the top with about 48000 points, where the #2 person has about 11000.

Firstly MyOrangeHat is female.

Secondly it wasn't an underhanded ploy. She was trying to spread the good word about the site and didn't realise the effect it would have.

Finally, it wasn't done for the points because they are suppose to cap at 300 a day. She has said that she has no intention of using those points because it would be unfair for her to claim the, possibly limited, merchandise.

Well, I think it's shiny that so many people heard about the movie because of Slashdot.

Wren,

I'm glad to hear it wasn't what it looked like -- I was going from the available evidence over at Slashdot.

The "underhanded" part was a reference to submitting a Slashdot link that would give her referral points, instead of a simple link to the site URL. I wasn't aware that the points were supposed to be capped, so I assumed it was a ploy to garner huge numbers of points and corner the market on Firefly goodies.

At any rate, it sounds like no great harm was done, and it certainly did work to spread the word...

The whole point system is set up to encourage people to get the word out. It is an incentive program, and MyOrangeHat has every right in the world to take advantage of points she has earned - cap or no cap - because that is their purpose. She certainly shouldn't feel bad about it, and we fellow Browncoats should resist giving her any grief over it, since she has been successful at getting the word out, which, of course, benefits us all.
