Warning: This thread has spoilers. I know anyone hanging around this board has probably seen Firefly and Serenity, but just on the off chance that someone is REALLY lost, if you haven't seen them, go watch them and come back. I'm also going to touch on some spoilers from the comic books.

Okay. Let's say Joss Whedon wants to do another Firefly show. He's got plenty of funding. No TV executives are in his way. All cast/crew are available. The writers are on board. We're talking best case scenario (that doesn't involve time travel). What would you like to see happen?

Possibilities:
1. Nothing. It's too late; we should all just recognize that beautiful things die sometimes. Any new content at this point would just sully the memory. The magic can't be recreated. It sucks, but we need to come to peace with that.
2. Wicked Delayed Sequel Series. We're back on Serenity with the story jumped forward 10 or 15 years.
3. Wicked Delayed Sequel Movies. The story is too epic for the series now. If the story gets continued, it should be as movies.
4. Reboot. New actors. Maybe new writers? We get to see someone else's take on the 'Verse we all love.
5. Spin-Off. We follow either one crew member after leaving Serenity or an all new crew/ship in the 'Verse, presumably with occasional cameos from original cast members.
6. Another option I didn't mention.

Part of me deep down feels like the answer is option 1, but I really want to explore some other possibilities before I give in to it.

Here are the major obstacles, as I see it:
1. Book and Wash are dead, and without them, Serenity just isn't the same.
2. The actors are all visibly older.
3. The movie changes the tone significantly. The TV show was about folks on the fringe trying to get by. Joss Whedon said, "I wanted to play with that classic notion of the frontier: not the people who made history, but the people history stepped on – the people for whom every act is the creation of civilization". But the movie makes things pretty epic. They're major players in a story that impacts the whole 'Verse.

Considering that, I have a hard time seeing option 2. Too much has changed for us to go back. I trust Joss, so if he said he could do it, I would believe him, but I can't quite see how it would work. And I'd never be satisfied with option 3. I don't really want more epic movies. I want more of what I saw in the series. Option 4, a reboot, seems like the worst idea. It wouldn't be Firefly without those actors. I only included it for completeness sake. I think my best case scenario is a Zoë Washburne spin-off. Here's my idea:

Months after the events of the movie, Mal finds out Zoë is pregnant. This changes everything for him. He put everyone's lives at risk to send out the signal about Miranda, and as a result, Wash died. Emma (the kid) is Zoë's last link to her dead husband, so Mal thinks he owes it to her to make sure Emma isn't raised on a ship constantly on the run from the Alliance. Mal asks Zoë to go run some simple errand with Emma while he and Jayne are finally selling the Lassiter. When she gets back to where the ship was, it's gone. But she finds she's got an account with three shares of the profit from the Lassiter (hers, Mal's, and Wash's). Only River had any idea he was going to do it. Zoë uses the money to buy her own gorram ship.

I like the idea of Zoë finally becoming a captain. The idea of seeing little Emma playing with Wash's old dinosaurs gives me goosebumps. I really think this story could honor Wash's death. It also lets the consequences of the movie continue in the background while the main story of the series is back to being about people trying to get by. Enough time has passed for Emma to be old enough to be an interesting character in her own right. What do you think?

What's your best case scenario for the future of Firefly?

ZEEK

My heart says a spinoff is what I want. No former crew members. Maybe some side characters could show up but it's not really necessary. I would prefer it to be a different kind of show just set in the same universe. So, not just another smuggler crew. I always liked the spinoff idea of the alliance captain from bushwacked eventually getting so disillusioned with the alliance that he goes rogue and leaves. I don't know if that should be his whole ship and crew or just a few of them on the run or what, but it could be interesting. I think too long has passed for that to work, but they could still do the same thing with a totally different alliance character.

My head says that really the best option is nothing. I seriously doubt they can ever make new material that will live up to the nostalgia and love that Firefly has. They'd have to find the perfect group of new actors and staff. Plus Joss would need to have a great new story in mind. That's a longshot scenario. I think at best they'd come up with something good but not great and it would just make the whole Firefly universe a little less awesome.

I'd take whatever I could get. That said, I doubt anything will ever happen.

After posting last night, I watched this: http://www.cosmicbooknews.com/content/josh-whedons-done-marvel-talks-n
ot-regretting-bring-back-coulson-video

If you jump to 25:27, someone asks about a new story in the Firefly universe. Joss says that in his misery after the show got canceled he had an idea for a spin-off. If it included main characters, it might not work now, but man, I would LOVE to know what that idea was.

I mostly agree. I'd want Joss to just write what he thinks is the best possible story, and not worry about catering to fans. I'd love every occasional nod though.

Zeek, I identify with the idea of my head and heart being at odds, but I'd absolutely roll the dice on a new series, even though part of me is skeptical.

I was also skeptical at first about the idea of 100% new characters, but I guess that's what each iteration of Star Trek has done. I'm not sure yet how well I think that would work for Firefly.

Separate train of thought: It's hard for me to imagine most of those characters staying together aboard Serenity. Book and Wash are dead. Jayne was only ever a mercenary, so he leaves when there isn't enough profit (as we see in the comic book). Simon and Mal seem even more at odds in the movie than they did in the series. He's already gotten booted from the ship once, after all. River, of course, goes with Simon. And maybe Kaylee goes with Simon eventually too? Sadly, it's much easier for me to see the family falling apart than staying together.

I think Zoë is the only character I can relatively easily see pulling off a spin-off.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

As long as they don't try a "Wash's twin brother" scenario, I'm game for just about anything. It won't be the end of the world if nothing ever happens though, and I've still get Firefly & Serenity to rewatch the rest of my life.

This real important. I want to make a good reply.

The aging wouldn't matter, wouldn't show if our BDHs return
at the end of Serenity in a top notch animated movie. It's
not gonna happen, tho; as they are successfully employed.

When Star Trek TNG was proposed, Leonard Nimoy said, "You
can't catch lightening in a bottle twice." But they did, and I
was well pleased with TNG.

Many of us on this board have one or more artistic talents. You
know how it goes when the Muse comes ... Inspiration renders
perfection.

Joss is more creative than most of us; he's truly gifted. If he
gets inspired to do Firefly 2, with the same ship, I hope ...
he might exceed our fondest hopes.

... Make it so.

... oooOO}{OOooo ...

At this point, I'm fine with it staying dead.

But if it has to come back, I'd like to see it pick up 10yrs later.
Mix of new and old crew.

Everybody Dies Alone.

I'd love to see something similar to the comics and with what they did with the comic books. Just Keep Flying which is what the show has always been about. It's always been about Malcolm Reynolds and his crew trying to keep his boat in the air. I would just love to see that continue. The story would be different considering the circumstances. I mean Zoe has a child, Inara has been decommissioned as a companion, Wash and Shepard are gone, River and Simon are still being hunted, etc. It would just be more interesting to see how Malcolm continues to keep his boat in the air and jobs rolling in. We've also haven't seen how far Alliance is willing to go to get River back and at this point kill Simon. In Leaves On The Wind they sent some less than perfect copies of River after the crew of Serenity and that failed. I'm sure they also have some more operatives under their control that are meaner and far more cruel than the one we saw in Serenity. I would also love to see how Zoe copes with Wash gone. I mean in Leaves On The Wind we see a little glimpse into how she feels because she sees Wash in visions. He's a ghost in her mind and I would love to see if that improves or deteriorates.

They could also do what the videogame Firefly Online is looking to do (if it ever gets released hopefully) which is they are going back in time to the shows time period. In the game the events of Serenity haven't happened yet so the crew of Serenity are still taking jobs with all the crew members intact. I wouldn't mind seeing that as well since Firefly Online has added some cool new characters like Whisper Lo Pan.

I am for a reboot covering the same stories from TV, movie and comics, with one exception: the comic Leaves on the Wind #6. Can we please not have an army of River-style psychics fighting the one true River? It's too Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. It's too much.

I wasn't expecting anyone to be in favor of a reboot!

I'd be happy to see more about the other students at River's academy, but I agree that I don't want them to be clones (even not literally).

Firefly stories should be retold over and over, kind of like stories about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Dozens of people have played those characters. Firefly deserves a reboot more than the two Holmes mysteries on TV: Sherlock and Elementary.

I would also love a spinoff for Inara. if you remember the episode Out Of Gas they hinted that Inara might have been running from something and that's why she shipped out with Serenity. They never really told us what happened or the events that caused Inara to ship out with the crew of Serenity. We know it's not Alliance trouble because she returned to the training house on Sinhon which is in Alliance controlled space so it's not Alliance trouble. I just would've liked a prequel story for Inara similar to what Shepard Book got with Shepard's Tale.

I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

That's true! Some background on Inara could show us a whole different side of the 'Verse. I could be down for a pre-Firefly Inara spin-off. It would make it hard to do cameos though...

It would be amazing to see that even if it's just in a comic book. I mean we get so much background on other characters but Inara is Mal's lover I mean that's pretty huge. Shepard was big too because they hinted so much at his life in Firefly (when he handed the Alliance his ident card) and then in Serenity when he told Mal that he didn't need to tell him his life story and he kept it a secret. It was such a big thing that they needed to expand on it and they did a great job with Shepard's Tale but I feel something with Inara needs to be done even if it's just a one issue thing. TBH i'm okay with the show being dead and that we only get comic book series to go with. The comics are great because they are made for the fans and since we know what happened with Firefly and Serenity they can continue the story and move on without having to re-explain everything. With a new series it will either have to be a reboot to be successful or they will have figure out a way to include new people who have never seen the original show or the movie. Serenity did that with it's opening talking about the war but even that wasn't enough because it never really elaborated on River and Simon. The film was made for the fans not for the regular audience, it was made for browncoats. If they redid Firefly it would have to be done in such a way that i'm not sure is even possible. Personally i'm really happy with the comic books. Though Fox has hinted at Firefly coming back and they never ever ever hint at anything. In Sleepy Hollow Ichabod fights Reavers and other Fox shows have put in Firefly hints. So it's possible Fox may look at doing a mini series which Tim Minear has said he really wants to do 100%
