OK, I've been kicking this idea around for awhile now and I realise it's probably impossible. But I'll post it up anyway, someone may get some inspiration of a new projct from it.

The idea is a 3-D model of Serenity that can be explored in first-person mode. You find it sitting derelict and deserted on some nameless moon. It's still intact but has definetly seen better days. It has more rust than paint. Still it's a beautiful ship and the cargo door is down so you decide to investigate. Upon entering you hear the voice of a girl saying, wispering "All aboard". You turn expecting to see someone but no one is there. As you explore the rest of the ship you catch other sounds, other voices: "It's just an object..." "I already picked out a name for her" "That ain't no Sheperd". The sound of people laughing emanates from the dining room. An explosion can be heard coming from the engine room. These sounds always disappear when you near the area of their origin.

Well you get the idea. A ship full of ghostly sounds. Some good, some not so much. The med bay was the place of a lot of pain. Both physical and emotional. It could have an almost overwelming, disorienting whirlwind of sounds. Add some of Mal's screaming from War Stories.

The effect I was thinking of would be less house of horrors and more like the ship has never forgotten the people that sailed her. That lived in her.

The sounds would be easy enough. They're already recorded. It's the 3-D program thingy (look at me, I'm all technical )that would take some expertise. Oh well, there it is.

"That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth."

MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

Pitch it to Universal, word is they bought Serenity as a merchanising opportunity rather than a work of art. I guess we'll have to dream about it as a VR headset?

Should be technically possible using the Quake III engine, I might dig up the system and see what I can do... *dissapears in search of old CDs*

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

A shiny (if not a bit creepifying) idea.

I am hoping (fingers crossed & everything) that the BDM is successful enough for Universal to invest in the creation of some sort of video game or the like and that one of the features would be a 1st person perspective tour of Serenity.

I'll take the good with the bad on this one. Doesn't a "merchandising oppurtunity" mean that there will be all sorts of t-shirts, toys, games, and other great things for us to buy!? That's awesome!

That would be damn cool. I only wish I knew how to do something like that. Someone do this, please!

I'm with zeke on the merchandising. Plus, as long as there's more oppurtunities for people to discover Firefly, I'm not that bothered as to the motivations of those who are selling it.

Do you think that there is a way for us to show interest in a Firefly video game? I mean, lots of movies come out with video games... and if they are doing this for merchandising purposes, if there is a call for it, they'll do it.

^^ if you call for it on the Universal Serenity site, you may earn points, and points mean ...

Dunno. I'm not sure a game would be all that good. It would have to be something truly spectacular, absolutely blow-your-mind-out-of-this-world to do any justice to the Firefly 'verse. And so many game flim tie-ins just...aren't.

Forget Q3, just about any game engine can handle having sound effects linked to locations.

Heck, I've seen it done in the JK engine, and that's nearly a decade old.

The really tough part would be the 3d modelling. Try poking around the forums at http://www.massassi.net/ (though I'm a bit biased, being a JK/MotS/JO/JA gamer), where most of the artists hang out. You should be able to scare up (or even create) a few browncoats who'd be interested in a Firefly MP project.

Using a Star Wars game as a basis would open the door for a full TC (Total Conversion) --JK and JO have already proven that they can handle bullets (as opposed to visible and deflectable blaster bolts).

One of the projects they were doing on the old official site was they had a guy doing a Serenity map in UT2K3. It looked really good but I dont know if they ever finished it, what with cancelation and the site shutting down.

Actually, the JO and JA games are Quake III engine as well, when you're mapping there's literally a button you have to press to decide what game you want to publish it for

I've had problems with TCs before. A few years back I was working on a Simpsons TC for Quake III and Fox shut us down because it was supposedly infringing on their copywrite. Am tempted to try and get one of the ground quiet-like and just release it without notifying anyone...

Well, movie tie-ins have come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of years, but I think aims need to diverge here - a "ghost ship" would be kinda cool, and would probably be easy enough to make with the quake engine, but it wouldn't make a good game in and of itself.

An Elite clone set in the Firefly 'verse, on the other hand, could totally kick ass.

DO you have a maya or 3ds/max model yet? If so could I use it for a fan film test project?

I loved the Zork games. I had Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis and Zork: Grand Inquisitor.
I always remember the mental asylum in Nemesis, scary as reaver territory.

the 3d world could be accomplished using a program called openGL and C++, but it'd take ages to make it good, months, years.

i've never actually done it using this, but i know someone who made a 3d world using it.

it's all possible, but bloody hard, and it'd take goram ages.

I would like to try to do a fan film based in the firefly universe. If I could find some 3d models of the ships and the like I can use them to pattern any space sequences and get my animator working on the sequences.

So I assume no one has built one yet....we'll just build it from the ground up.

FORRESTWOLF

Well, for the Neverwinter Nights Firefly project, the ship interiors are generic models (deck flooring, piping, etc.), NOT Serenity, but they're all in the right layout, and together with the Asian-themed objects, it comes out feeling an awful lot like Serenity.

The placeable sound objects work great in Neverwinter Nights, so while I didn't put them in for my project, it would be a SNAP to put in captured sound files and make what you're talking about. Together with zooming the camera to very, very close to first person (a bit o' a problem in NWN, but you get really close to full person), you'd have close to what you're talking about. And I've got an EXTERIOR model for the ship, so before you go in, you'd see the outside.

If someone wants to try this, let me know - I'll give advice and such to help out (and could maybe import sound files I'm provided with).

As for actual Serenity interior models, I'd LOVE any of the Unreal models someone comes up with, or makes - I can convert any 3DS or Gmax format file, I think.

As far as video game tie ins, I've seen my share of bad ones (Alias, love the show, but the game was weak)however, this is a Joss thing. The Buffy Chaos Bleeds game was well done. Perhaps not truely spetacular but well done and they actually managed to get most of the original cast to do the voices and included extras like clips from interviews with the cast. So a Firefly game could be great as long as Joss maintains creative control and the cast remains involved.
just my $.02.
