Today I had a story on the Firefly premiere accepted on Slashdot:

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/20/1713222&mode=thread&tid=12
9

Naturally, I included a link to fireflyfans.net. Hey Haken, did you know that you don't exist? According to one post, your site is too professional-looking to be a real fan site. It's "obvious" that Fox is running this site, not some geek.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

Yeah, saw the Slashdot article. Thanks.

Funny thing is, a friend of mine from Sun Microsystems saw the article then called me to "warn me" specifically that I'm on Slashdot.

This is a good a test as any to see if the site can take the load.

I seem to recall your claiming your that your web technology should scale well. Since you haven't crashed yet, I guess that's true! Most web sites that get "slashdotted" aren't so lucky:

The server can take the load. It's my little T1 that I'm worried about.

I have Etherpeek running right now monitoring the network traffic. Utilization of the T1 is hitting about 60 to 70%. Every now and then I'll see a spike and then a drop, which means that the feed maxed out and all the connections times out for a few ms then recovers.

You have your own T1? Isn't that expensive?

Well, it's not really "my" T1, but I do have unrestricted use of it.

Oh yeah, like that little bit of info is going to convince people you are not a plant for FOX.

Did you know you lived in Hawaii? What does Haken's wife think now that she has two husbands?

Can you post a link to that particular thread, Zicsoft? My wife and I couldn't find the one you're talking about.

Oh, here's your check:

Probably doesn't matter either way with Haken or his wife, they already have 5 grandkids. A little more adventure might be what the household needs

Okay, that was a bad idea. Now I'm really frightened. Do you get hazard pay when you post there?

I did have faith in SOME of the people at /. but now I'm not so sure. I think some of 'em need to get out of their Y2K bunkers and smell some fresh air. Failing that they could just come out from their parents basements.

I'm not a huge Microsoft fan, by any means (hence why I use an Apple) but to say that this site sucks and should be done in pure HTML? Great idea, but you'd be doing it in CSS or Perl with a LOT of man hours. I'm not into editors but obviously FP 5.0 made Haken's life a lot easier. People take their hatred of MS a little TOO far at /.. It's like, "I use Linux/UNIX/BSD and I'm the greatest person in the world. Anyone who uses MS products or Apple products is a total loser. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to check Kazaa to see if my copy of Star Trek: Nemesis is done downloading yet."

I think the FP part is *just* the http server.

There is still lots of VB with ASP programming and MS SQL. The technology and the difficulty in programming and harnessing the webpages is probably about as difficult whether you are using LAMP or VB/ASP/MS-SQL... Having done programming in both sides, I sure appreciate the easiness in which you can do layouts in MS's IDEs... But it is still evil.
