500 years???

Okay, this has been bugging me. On the back of the DVD case, it says that Firefly takes place 500 years in the future. Finding absolutely no clues in the series as to timing, I assumed that this was just stupid marketing guys wanting a number and Joss throwing them a nice round one. Seeing the same figure on the official movie site gave me pause, but I thought it might just be based on the DVD thing.

But then I check out the "History" section on here, and get not just "500 years," but the specific date of 2517.

Where the heck did that figure come from?

Well, first Haken wished really hard to have a concrete date for Firefly on his site and a little fairy showed up and offered it to him in exchange for his blender. Haken agreed and the fairy being true to her word waved her wand and said : "skada-ka-BAM!" and so the date appeared.

I really dont know either. I just wanted an excuse to say skada-ka-BAM.

ARCPLAYER

The TV series had a couple versions of a narative introduction. A date was displayed in those intro's.
My memory is telling me 2517. Does anyone know if I'm rememboring corectly?

You are remembering correctly. All the intros (except for OMR) said 2517 A.D.

This is kinda interesting. One of the promos for the show that aired before the show premiered said it was 2456 A.D. But since thats a FOX promo, I'm sticking with the 2517 date as the real one.

i'm surprised that someone canvassing for points on the serenitymovie fansite hasn't mentioned it, but that has a date for the Battle of Serenity Valley as 2511.

Actually the original question was why the history section on this site states 2517. This site predates the official site so their listing of the Battle of Serenity Valley taking place in 2511 can't be used as an explaination.

Yes the 2517 does come from the openings which I previously said, but it was more than just The Train Job.

If by promo you are referring to what I mentioned today, then no. That promo which aired before The Train Job, and contained clips from Serenity, stated 2456. This was a promo that FOX made and can't be taken seriously.

Well I don't really think watching 14 episodes is something to need saving from but its from Serenity. After the war sequence, it says "Six years later".
