I just did today. If you haven't seen it yet you may wanna skip this discussion.

I see Amazon has ordered a season 4 so YAAAY.

What do you think about Bobbie on the Rocinante? Did she retire, or is she taking leave? She wasn't in uniform. I don't think that last incident would be on her since the other woman acted without orders, although she was in lead and therefore responsible for their safety.

I think her and Alex make a good couple. Although I like almost all the characters I WAS happy Diogo got the shaft. Annoying little twerp got even more annoying with the face tattoos

Thoughts? Anyone but 6ix, that is.

Wow. You burned through 3 seasons of that show pretty fast.

Was season 3 any good?

Hubby has been on vacay since last Friday. Yeah, I would say that there really aren't any quality issues from making the jump from Syfy to Amazon, other than the third season had less jokes. I'm really interested in where they will go with season 4 as they have 1300 new avenues to go with. It's worth the dough.

I peeked into the Future. Bobbie is retired, working in Veterans Outreach, and back on Mars in the fourth book. The TV show in the fourth year might also have her back on Mars, at least temporarily.

From The Expanse #4 - Cibola Burn - Prologue: Bobbie Draper

A thousand worlds, Bobbie thought as the tube doors closed. And not just a thousand worlds. A thousand systems. Suns. Gas giants. Asteroid belts. Everything that humanity had spread to, a thousand times over. The screen above the seats across from her showed a newsfeed, but the speakers were broken, the man’s voice too fuzzed to make out the words. The graphic that zoomed in and out beside him was enough for her to follow. New data had come in from the probes that had gone through the gates. Here was another image of an unfamiliar sun, circles to mark the orbits of new planets. All of them empty. Whatever had built the protomolecule and fired it toward Earth back in the depths of time wasn’t answering calls anymore. The bridge builder had opened the way, and no great gods had come streaming through.

It was astounding, Bobbie thought, how quickly humanity could go from What unimaginable intelligence fashioned these soul-wrenching wonders? to Well, since they’re not here, can I have their stuff?

I actually got into the show because of a discussion with Second sometime in spring of 2017. I was watching it in small bits and pieces during the summer since it was really busy with the move last year. I can't remember where I left off, but I do think that I finished the 2nd season.

Overall, it was a pretty good show I thought. It might actually even be better than I give it credit for though since I didn't have the time to really indulge and binge watch like I prefer to when watching a show like that.

I wasn't even aware that Amazon had picked it up. That's really cool that some of these shows are getting a second life because of places like Netflix and Amazon. Maybe there's still some hope that they could get the Dark Matter crew back together before they're too tied up with other obs.

Glad to hear the quality didn't really suffer after the move.

Sorry to go off topic, but since we're on the topic of shows being raised from the dead... did anybody watch Deadwood's original run?

That show was amazing, IMO. It wasn't necessarily ended on a bad note, but just rather anti-climactic. They said they intended the last few episodes to lead up to a movie, but it never happened. That being the case, I always thought it was a shame they didn't just end the show a few episodes earlier after a huge dramatic conflict and just let the viewers decide in their own minds where it went from there.

Long story short, and I'll believe it when I see it, but I just got word from my brother that after all of these years they've finally greenlit the Deadwood movie that was promised a decade ago.

For the first time in ages I'm actually excited about a movie that's coming.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I would sell every last thing I owned, including the shirt off my back to be able to go to another planet where one could wander unimpeded for the rest of my days. Naked, since I sold the shirt

On that note, a close relative just did one of those DNA tests and we came up 15% Romanian/Bulg/Yugo/Hungarian. Maybe I am part Gypsy and that would finally explain why I want to pack up and leave every six months. Or more...

Your idea of a conversation, like too many people, is to tell us all about yourself. 15% Romanian/Bulg/Yugo/Hungarian? The Universe does not care about trivial and personal. Miller told Holden that in the TV show, but that is a much shorter version than in the book of Miller’s final conversation with Holden:

“And there are worlds like this on the other side of all those gates?”

“Some of them, maybe. Who knows?” Miller turned to face Holden again, his blue eyes eerie and full of secrets. “Someone fought a war here, kid. One that spanned this galaxy and maybe more. My team lost, and they’re all gone now. A couple billion years gone. Who knows what’s waiting on the other side of those doors?”

“We’ll find out, I guess,” Holden replied, putting on a bold front but frightened in spite of himself.

“Yeah, well let’s not get too happy,” Miller said. “I keep warning you. Doors and corners, kid. That’s where they get you. Humans are too fucking stupid to listen. Well, you’ll learn your lessons soon enough, and it’s not my job to nursemaid the species through the next steps.”

“So,” Holden said after a few minutes of quiet sky watching. “Thanks for the visit. I guess I’d better be getting back to my gunfight.”

“Not done with you,” Miller said. The tone was light, but the words were ominous.

“Okay.”

“I wasn’t built to fix shit humanity broke,” Miller said. “I didn’t come here to open gates for you and get the lockdown to let you go. That’s incidental. The thing that made me just builds roads. And now it’s using me to find out what happened to the galaxy-spanning civilization that wanted the road.”

“Why does that matter now, if they’re all gone?”

“It doesn’t,” Miller said with a weary shrug. “Not a bit. If you set the nav computer on the Roci to take you somewhere, and then fall over dead a second later, can the Roci decide it doesn’t matter anymore and just not go?”

“No,” Holden said, understanding and finding a sadness for this Miller construct he wouldn’t have guessed was possible.

“We were supposed to connect with the network. We’re just trying to do that, doesn’t matter that the network’s gone. What came up off of Venus is dumb, kid. Just knows how to do one thing. It doesn’t know how to investigate. But I do. And it had me. So I’m going to investigate even though none of the answers will mean fuck-all to the universe at large.”

“I understand,” Holden said. “Good luck, Miller, I—”

“I said I’m not done with you.”

Holden took a step back, suddenly very frightened about where this might be going. “What does that mean?”

“It means, kid, that I’ll need a ride.”

Done. It was a decent season, but from what I've seen on comment sections a lot of people said Cibola Burn was a slow, hard, mostly transitional book...and I would agree. There were two episodes that were pretty sluggish, but still mildly interesting. I did hit the fast forward a couple times though.

They look to be setting up for the interesting bits for a season 5.

1. Hated Naomi's hair.

2. Glad they didn't kill off Amos, he reminds me of Hubby

One ep left in Season 4 - been binge watching from mid season 2 over the last week. It is a great piece of work imho, the production design and execution alone are worth every minute. I read the books first, long ago, but have not read past Babylon's Ashes. SyFy scum made it hard to keep current with the eps if you missed any and I missed a few (didn't have it on series - my fault) - and others were re-aired out of sequence. Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah...
Thank gawd for Amazon. Season 4 has been a seamless match to the others. Disappointed in where they took Bobbie's character but will always enjoy her beating the crap out of men (or women) who deserve it.
The sets on New Terra were perfect. While I read Cibola I wondered how they would handle so many elements of the story visually - they were all A+ imo. The proto molecule creator sets were amazing. Remember, we're dealing with budgets that have killed other scifi shows. Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah...
There's so much new science in these that I love just picking those out and enjoying. The computer graphics, 3-D modeling, Daddy wants now. Accurate long distance space travel - mwaa!
Amos - I did not like the show's Amos at first after reading the books and getting use to that one, but now he's my favorite. Wes Chatham has a great talent for the dry, dark, deadpan comment, lol all the time.
"Who desecrated the Martian flag!"
"I did."
"Did you think it was funny?!?"
"Well, not right now."

Naomi - yeah - her hair! F*cksake, they have made her too normal.
I can't wait for season 5. I think I will read the remaining books first though - can't not. Looks like there will be 9 of them. I have 2 more to go to catch up to the last one:

7. Persepolis Rising - December 5, 2017
8. Tiamat's Wrath - March 26, 2019
9. Unnamed final novel - TBA 2020

He was in the last season of The Unit -which if you haven't seen- was a damn fine show too. We actually bought all the seasons but the last one. They were supposed to finish it up with a movie and never did. It had a killer intro song.

America loves a winner!

So with season 4 having dropped on Amazon Prime, I took it upon myself to go back to the start and binge the hell out of this series.

I started watching it, as it was out a few years ago, but got distracted and never picked it up again.

I like it more than I love it. And I do really like it. But save for a few spots here and there, it's been mostly solid viewing, while lacking a really WOW factor.

I keep waiting for Amos to explain how he's so street wise yet there's little to no history of him - officially. He's kinda like Shepard Book. Lots more to his back story than being a mob boss, a petty king on a petty hill with delusions of grandeur. Lived ( worked ?) in a brothel in his youth - guess like those Boy-whores in Heart of Gold. He acts more like a Madam, with inside knowledge of the business... Was he sly? He tends to favor the women folk, at least so far.

But to the point, there's a few ( very ) things which I've yet to understand.

Select to view spoiler:

Where'd the designer of the Epstein drive end up? Did I miss it? Because last I saw, he was testing it and blasted himself away, never to be heard from again.

How are the belters so beleaguered and put upon? There's far more than enough mining material in the asteroid belts for all to be wealthy. This permenant worker class stuff just doesn't sit well w/ me.

Also, alien tech opens up a gigantic Star Gate of sorts, and instead of going where it's KNOWN folks can find work, they high tail it into the unknown? If that ring closes up, then where are they? Stuck on the other side of the galaxy, or maybe entire different galaxies. This makes no sense. Our solar system can't be SOOO full and crowded as to drive folks into the great abyss , just for a chance at fiding work. No way.

A door opens up like that, by parties unknown, it's taking DECADES of probes and studying before anyone is allowed to go set up camp.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

I'm just a red pill guy in a room full of blue pill addicts.

I recently did the same - I'd agree, no particular WOW factor, more of a bunch of things that add up to really liking it, glad we have more. Also: did you ever watch Andromeda? That was tv scifi for a while, so just in terms of how far we've come in sophisticated sets and visuals and tech you can believe it's impressive as hell. Remember how the cost of FF's sets gave Fox a reason to not renew? Maybe it was an excuse, but glad for whatever reason the production is top shelf on this one. I am enjoying it a great deal for the escapism factor.

That should be the next season, and o-boy, the effects department will be greatly tested as well. I am looking forward again to how they solve some really big questions from the story in the books.

ETA: there are a few novellas for the series, and one of them centers on Amos’ background, appropriately titled The Churn. At Amazon and probably “free” online somewhere as well.

As for your spoilers:

1. dunno

2. Gotta have miners and gotta have class warfare plot lines.

3. See great land rush of 1889 - who wants to be an employee when you can be a Bossman, sassa? Also: reckless adventure is a human trait.

4. Stuck

5. Allowed? How would you police that much space? Season 4 has an Oklahoma scenario that addresses that.

So the same alien 'intelligence ' which ghosted 100,000 men, women and children on Eros before it impacted onto Venus opens a stargate of sorts to a bunch of new system

Didn't seem like much time had passed, to do a thorough investigation into things like will the gate stay open, where do all the portals lead, and are humans just flying into a galactic buffet table, while being the main course?

Mining chances or not, I'd like to know. At least early settlers had some idea about Indians, and the help of the US Calvary to come to their aid, maybe, if things got too dicey. Oh well.

It only ghosted them because a greedy megalomaniac Jules-Pierrer Moa, and an off the reservation scientist Dresden, decided to see what it would do if inflicted on humans in a controlled, monitored environment all in an effort to discover the military possibilities. In other words: cha-ching. I would argue you could have done that on a smaller scale, but they didn't ask me. The protomolecule is neither ethical or unethical, but the early aliens might have been Crusaders just like humans.

So you would not be the first through one of these - me neither. But some desperate types, like Belters, might not even think it through beyond, "o yeah, free stuff, we out." I'm not sure how much Columbus's crew really understood in terms of what was ahead of them or exactly what life on the Mayflower was actually going to entail for all that time on the boat.

There is definitely plenty of fiction in this science fiction. Just wait for the next season - ho-boy!

Doesn't matter who did what, the point is, they didn't know what was behind the portal in the first place. And do the belters have any clue what the environments on these places are like ? Gravity? Belters, via their low gravity environment, can't even stand 1 G w/ out great assistance. What of planets w/ greater gravity?

It's a small thing to fuss over, I admit. The series overall is awesome, and I am greatly looking forward to next season. I just hope they don't drop all 8 eps ( or how ever many ) all at once. Keep the interest going and do it weekly, is my main input.

Just watched the S5 EP1 this morning - there are so many streaming services dropping so many things that I completely missed it the first day. Like an early Christmas present. Still amazing. One of the opening shots, the long follow camera on a shuttle flying through a space station (Tyko?) - gah - amazing. The detail is one thing, but then to think people have to imagine all of the surfaces and purposes for everything in view without a lot of RW items to draw on... jaw dropping. I would love to work on the show to find out how they are lighting those claustrophobic sets.

EP 6 S5 dropped - watched it this morning. Great stuff - more f bombs than usual, which fits. I think it keeps getting better and better. There are still some bumps as there will be with any tv series. It's damn gorgeous to look at. I am def going to reading the next book before the next season. I think there will be 9 seasons.

Brenda - if you're reading - not sure if you are watching this show. Cara Gee is a Canadian actress playing one of my fav characters, Camina Drummer, IMDB:

"Cara Gee is a Canadian film, television, and stage actress.

Gee was primarily known as a stage actress in Toronto, Ontario, where her acting credits included productions of Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad, Daniel MacIvor's Arigato, Tokyo, Tomson Highway's The Rez Sisters, Cliff Cardinal's Stitch, Birdtown and Swanville's 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls and Louise Dupré's Tout Comme Elle.

She made her feature film debut in Empire of Dirt for which she was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award. The film also won a Special Jury award at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and Cara won Best Actress at the American Indian Film Festival. In 2013, Gee was named one of TIFF's annual Rising Stars.

Gee has also worked in television, playing guest roles in the television series King and Republic of Doyle. In 2014, she starred as the lead character in the Western drama series Strange Empire on CBC Television, for one season until it was cancelled in 2015.

As of 2016, Gee stars in the 33-episode web series Inhuman Condition, which airs on the KindaTV YouTube channel. In 2017 she began to star in the recurring role of Camina Drummer on the Amazon television series The Expanse.

Gee is Ojibway. She was born in Calgary, Alberta, and raised in Bobcaygeon, Ontario."

===

One of many top notch actors in the show.

We LOVE Drummer. I think she could get her own series. Best character on the show, perhaps.

Can't wait for February. Might pick up one of those egg crate seat cushions for extended vegging comfort

BTW, How are they handling "Alex" after Cas Anvar was caught with underage girls in his hotel room?? Are they kind of writing him out or minimizing him at all?

Hijacked from reddit about Cas.

Thursday, October 15: A member of The Expanse production crew contacted the moderation team about sharing her experience with more than 2 years of sexual harassment by Cas Anvar while they were both working on The Expanse. Over the past few weeks, she has provided documents verifying her identity and work on The Expanse, statements about her experience, and screenshots of over 200 messages. Below is a summary of her experiences with Anvar both on and off set. She hopes that by sharing her experience, she can help corroborate a pattern of predatory behavior by Anvar toward young women. For context, at the time of the harassment the crew member was in her mid-twenties and physically young-looking for her age, and Anvar was approaching fifty years old.

Over the course of 2 years, from 2014 to 2016, an Expanse crewmember received inappropriate and sexually harassing messages from Cas Anvar. The crewmember has asked to remain anonymous, as she is still involved with production on The Expanse. Our moderation team has verified her identity, confirming that she worked in physical proximity to Anvar on The Expanse during the time of the harassment and has continued to do work on the show through Season 5. The harassing messages began at the start of the crewmember’s work on Season 1 production, when she was new to the industry. She states that Anvar pressured her to engage in physical intimacy (including aggressive requests to kiss her while at work) and meet outside of work or work events (at bars, his hotel room or spa, or via video chat), though she always refused.

The screenshots the crewmember shared are a combination of text messages and Facebook messages from Anvar’s personal Facebook account. In the screenshots, Anvar’s messages consist of unreciprocated sexual and flirtatious language, demands to meet outside of work, aggressive sexual statements about himself and his opinions of gender roles, inappropriate sexual and personal questions, and photos or videos of himself. The crewmember’s infrequent responses to Anvar show consistent refusal of Anvar’s advances and attempts to de-escalate his attention without angering him, and she recalls worrying about how saying ‘no’ to Anvar might lead to retaliation on a professional level. The screenshots show that when she refused Anvar or ignored his messages, he would often abruptly lose his temper or threaten to do so, insult her, or tell her in backhanded apologies that she was overly sensitive or had misunderstood his intentions, then return to proposition her again later. Screenshots show many messages from Anvar over weeks or months without any response from the crewmember. In the screenshots, Anvar’s messages include language, tone, and emoji/sticker use very similar to the messages that others have shared.

The crewmember says the majority of The Expanse's staff is extremely professional and kind, and the highest-ranking people “treat their crew better than any other set that I’ve been on.” She believes that it was likely the knowledge that her labor union would take strong action if she reported Anvar that prevented him from escalating his behavior physically, though she was too new to the industry to “understand that I had a voice and could say ‘no’ to a seemingly powerful man at work.”

Not having seen more than one episode of the show I'll skip this discussion as you suggest. What I can do is bump this thread back to the top.

Are they kind of writing him out or minimizing him at all?

fck. They must have filmed the season before this came out? I just popped in to see if there were any posts in this thread, so I'll do some looking and come back with what I find. I like his character enough, but I don't think the show would hurt too much without him. More pissed that - if it proves to be true - yet another molester on a film set - they never learn.

I don't even get why they think they can do that with all those people around and send all those texts and just get away with it forever.

Guy had a sweet role making bank, and now most likely won't ever work again.

I'm sure he could have found a dozen chicks to sleep with him before, but he just had to harass ones that DIDN'T want him??

Why did no one stop him??

I just never get it.

It does seem brain dead stupid. Taboo? Some people want what they can’t have? Should be a pill.

I did read that this season was wrapped before the allegations surfaced, but he will not be in the next and last Season #6. I am sorry to read they only plan on 6 instead of 1 for each book (9). I guess I should be happy for 6, considering!

JAYNEZTOWN

I quit this show.

Might have worked better as a video game?

The Expanse RPG
https://www.tabletopgaming.co.uk/reviews/the-expanse-rpg/

Lots of writers coming from Asia now but perhaps they won't support any one that Woke SJW shit?
I guess you could always go with Baxter, Station Eleven, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Trilogy, Sirens of Titan, Arthur C Clark stuff, Andy Weir's Hail Mary, Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, Gateway, Alastair Reynold's writing, The Gone series, Infomocracy by Malka Older, Luna New Moon Ian McDonald, Iain Banks, Snow Crash Neal Stephenson, Acacia by David Anthony Durham, Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture Series...or are Russian names going to be banned now?
The Fantasy and comicbook Genre gives a bit more flexibility not always needing to explain things by math or techno-jargon....Batman and Ironman fly simply because they can.
