Ok so in the commentary for shindig I beleive it is Jan Espenson that remarks that the bands around Zoe's neck signify her marriage to Wash. But in Out of Gas, in the flash back where Mal is showing Zoe the Serenity, Zoe is wearing the neck bands, this being before her and Wash even conceivably met.

This has probably been brought up before but I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone had some insight on this other then a simple consistencey error. Thank you and I'm off to watch more episodes and dreaming of the movie to come

Regular Boarders will know my obsession with Zoe's neck; to me, Zoe wearing a potential garrotte is like Kaylee wearing a dangly charm bracelet. However, although reported by Espenson, the symbolism is probably supplied by the costume designer rather than the writing team and so not subject to the same strictures of continuity.
A damn fine-looking woman

Let the fanwanking commence!

I posit that Zoe was married before and her husband died sometime after Wash came aboard, then she remarried to Wash.

Early: You ever been raped, Kaylee?
Kaylee: You know, it's funny you should mention that... ever heard of the Fox network?

Or, could be a different kind of marriage ceremony (we know from Triumph that there are non-standard weddings around). For example, Wash gives Zoe something of herself, in this case the necklace.

(Personally, I believe it's a continuity error, but every problem is an opportunity in disguise.)

My theory is this, there are 2 kinds of flashbacks, those that are factual and those that memories.
Factual flashbacks allow the viewer to travel back in time and see a moment in the past that means something to the present. The events that happened in factual flashbacks happened exactly as they do in the flashback. All people in these kinds of flashbacks are aware of the events that are happening and remember the events exactly as they appear. Visually they look the same as the present with only a subtitle or the change of the characters’ look that set it apart. In short factual flashbacks are reality, no ifs, ands, or buts. Examples of a factual flashback would be like the scenes in beginning of Serenity and Safe, and the Tracy flashbacks in the Message.
Memories on the other hand are personal perceptions of past events. What is seen in these is one person view of past events, colored by current feelings (future boyfriend/girlfriend having wind and spotlights on them, etc). Many times the characters appear the same in these flashbacks as they do currently; appear as adults in childhood memories, etc... The events portrayed in a memory may differ wildly from what someone else remembers and reality. People seen in memories will most likely not remember events the exactly the same and may not have even been present during the events shown. Visually memories often look different, like in the Sixth Sense how Bruce Willis’s memory of being shot at the end of the movie looks different then the same scene at the beginning of the movie. Most importantly, memories always have to include the person remembering. If Steve is remembering his life, you will see Steve going to the store, waterskiing, and etc. not the trip Steve’s girlfriend’s trip she took without him. Conversely Steve has to be present when his memories are being shown. If we are on Steve’s girlfriend’s trip she took without him, we can’t see Steve memories.
So my thought is the flash backs in Out of Gas are Mal’s memories and Zoë appears wearing her necklace because a.) In Mal’s mind Zoë’s always been married b.) He’s remembering her in past events as she is now. Plus I think it’s maybe a little too coincidental that Zoë wears red in every flashback scene.
