CAPTAIN

With Serenity in full flight, one question has been bugging me for quite a while. I must admit, I haven't really been keeping up with all the news, so forgive me if this question has already been asked and answered:

Is Serenity going to attempt to continue on with the series, or is it going to be another introduction to Firefly? Meaning: can we expect more exposition and the like in order to rope in new fans, or will it jump directly into the characters that us Browncoats already know and love so very much?

Frankly, I'm torn on the issue. If they attempt to just jump right into a new adventure, they can risk blocking out a whole bunch of potential fans who just might not understand what's going on at the moment. Though we would be reveling in some form of happiness that can't be measured, a lackluster box office sale would probably spell the end for any hopes of revival after the initial film.

The other choice is to kind of re-start the series again, attempt to re-introduce the characters to us, though I HOPE, truly and utterly, that they don't change anything about any of the characters. Instead, perhaps this would be the chance to expand more on the background of some of the more mysterious crew members and recurring characters.

I sincerely believe that this film can jump-start Firefly again and spin off more films and dare I say it... perhaps a revival of the show. The best possible way to do so would probably be to make a big hit in the theaters and prove to all this bigwig idiots out there that not only is Firefly a wonderful product, but it HAS an audience.

What's everyone else's take?

Take care all.

Joss has made it pretty clear in a few interviews/discussions that the show will give enough backstory for brand-new fans, but still be solid and appealing enough that us tried-and-true Browncoats are getting a brand-new adventure.

I guess it'd be a 'crash course' in the story arc.

From what I've read here and there, they will be picking up about six months after Object In Space. There will obviously be lots of new story being told, but I'm quite sure that Joss will make sure that brand new viewers won't be lost in the woods.

I guess this is what happens when bleddyn and I post a reply at the EXACT same moment. Mine got all screwey and I did a repost just to be safe.

I hope Whedon doesn't try to please the fans at all. If our artistic judgement was as good as Whedon's, he'd be waiting for our stuff. I hope the reason Whedon is making Serenity is because he's got something to say.

The Studio tries to please the fans, and we get fanpimp and Dusty Bottoms. Well you did ask, and this is only my take.

I finally figured out why Dusty Bottoms bugged me. He reminded me of an animatronic grizzled old prospector that would be out front of a theme park ride at the not-so-happiest-place on earth . Uh... wait a second... Universal has a theme park... "High Noon in Serenity Valley" hosted by Dusty Bottoms... Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!

Dusty Bottoms IS somebody directly related to the production of the film. The fact that he doesn't post much means that he's quite busy and the fact that he let a spoiler slip and then retracted it with a Barbara Streisand cover story means that he has some form of sense of humor. Now, Chris Buchanon is telling us that Dusty Bottom is going through legal troubles being held in a Universal holding cell... or something to that sort (I can't quite remember the exact phrasing).
