Does he have any family? or did he, brothers, sisters, dad.

All we know is that he had a mother and probably didn't have a father, seeing as he was raised by her and about 40 ranch hands back on Shadow.

The only time he ever says a word about it is with Saffron in Our Mrs. Reynolds, and even he remarks on how odd it is that she got him to open up.

Going by personality typing based on family dynamics, I'd say he's an oldest or an only, but then, he's been through so much that may not be accurate.

Unfortunately, the rest is purest speculation, 'cause he's a private guy.

Had a mother who raised him without his father. He talks about her in "Our Mrs. Reynolds"

Mal is a very private man and has asked me not to discuss his family.

"Just keep walkin, preacher man."

I would hope that theirs an EMPIRE STRIKES BACK-esque twist where one of the head honchos of the Alliance is Mal's missing father. Or something. Another random thought.

I'd like to think he had siblings, or at least one. But again, he never mentions it. Just his mommy. What a woman she must have been.

Here's my theory: If you recall from the episode "Bushwacked," Mal knows a lot about reavers and says the only thing to do with them is to kill them. I think he had to kill someone he loved who was becoming a reaver. When he is being interrogated, he is so solemn, talking about it. He knows from experience, but doesn't go into detail. Reavers are like the one topic NOBODY wants to talk about.

There's a lot of interesting fanfic that postulates about Mal's family. for instance, goldenthorn74 wrote a great fanfic called "Inner Darkness," that deals with reavers and Mal's personal loss. http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=36

Mal, to blue-handed Alliance dude: "No! It's not true! I'll never be like youuuu!"

Blue Handie: "Bwahahaha! Mal, *I* am your father!"

Must say that I agree with you - this is exactly what I think too. I've thought along the lines that after the war he went home, and like the soldiers in the Civil War (War of Northern Agression, War Between the States, whatever), found the ranch reavered (can I use that as a verb?) or some such.

Also, I think in some way he feels he failed the "women" in his life, given his reaction to Nandi's death in HOG. Like it happened before.
