Who else wants the Serenity poster to be "old-school"?

This has been on my mind for a while lately.

Most posters nowadays look like they're quickly and poorly slapped together in Photoshop. Very few of them have any "character." They usually don't even follow good design aesthetics.

So, that got me thinking about Serenity. . .and I really want a glorious, majestic, old-school, hand-drawn (or painted, whatever) poster for the BDM. I think it deserves it.

The first artist that came to mind was Drew Struzan, the guy who did the posters for the likes of Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, the Star Wars re-releases, etc; but it doesn't really matter who does it, so long as they do it well.

Am I alone in thinking this?

I think a Drew Struzan style poster would be an excellent idea.

How about like a old west type "wanted" poster for the crew with Serenity flying over head. It would be tanish in color and have burnt edges.

Agree....it really needs to have character. I love the graphics from the opening sequence, and the whole dichotomy between outer space and old west would get me interested if I didn't really know what Firefly or Serenity was about. The title "Serenity", while it means a lot to us, to most people, they're going to think "chick flick" or "kung fu movie", I'm afraid.

As far as a drawn poster, maybe, if it's done really, really well.

"We gotta go to that crappy town where I'M a hero..."

Well, that would be the whole point. Putting a lot of effort and talent into making a good product.

Check out some of the stuff Struzan has done and I think you'll see what I'm talking about:

Great idea... but I have heard that the movie will try to get away from the Western trappings. Not sure what that means but I bet your poster idea would be going in... er, another direction than whatever direction the movie is going. Whatever that is.

Dong ma?

That's a brilliant idea, rangrbob. So good I wish I'd have thought of it myself... (and I reallly hope Joss figures it out)

There's a teaser poster out (the one with just the ship in frame, right?) to let people know there is such a movie coming along down the pipe. A final poster will likely be worked out by the marketing crew, using footage and art stocks for inspiration and such, much closer to release.

Kinda like movie trailers usually have one early release with little bits of footage to build the hype, and then they do the full theatrical preview of the movie footage again later.

And hell yeah. An old-school poster like the Jones flicks, use the wanted poster idea for the touch of old west but add in lots of sci-fi looking stuff as well... Oh hell yeah.

I vote for Universal to contract the poster artwork out to our very own 11th Hour:

I think it's a brilliant idea. I love the old movie posters. There was always some cheesy tag line that sprawled across the corner. They had a muted background that faded around the pictures. Ooh, at the bottom in bold print should be "technicolor". Anyone want to try one?

btw 11thHour is awesome. The posters striking. The talent unquestionable. One of my favorite links.

I just saved a poster to the Blue Sun Room that kind of goes along with this thread:

I remembered that artwork, and it was one of the things that got me to thinking about it. Isn't something hand-drawn like that so much more impressive than a few photographs slapped together in Photoshop?

Now, I love Adobe Photoshop. . .I use it for my artwork almost every day. But it's only a tool, and like any tool, it's only as good as the people who use it. If someone only uses it as a shortcut, it takes away something. Just because it's faster to do a poster that way doesn't mean it's better to do it that way.

I like what Tiger did here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1753

This is perfectly in the style of those old 50's B-movie posters. Of course we all know that 'Serenity' will be A-movie all the way, but I just love those old hand-drawn posters!

I want a poster in the style of Zoë Mozert, myself. Sort of like her rendition of Jane Russell in The Outlaw.

A SERIES of posters...

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

I hope to hell that's not true. Literally HALF the charm of this show is the jerkwater locations and work they do! At least in my opinion. I will be most displeased if they lose that "frontier" aspect of the show. It might even make me cry... ;P
