Hello fellow UK Browncoats

After having read the blog from our favourite Captain! I have decided that we must do our best to spread the word!!

I was thinking of organising a Shindig where we could all meet, have a few bevvies and screen all the Firefly episodes before the BDM gets released.

As a nice compromise for a location, I was thinking something central like Leeds.

If we all bring at least one non-convert with us we could ensure that the word gets spread!!

What do you guys think?

Shall I go for it!

Sounds like a plan .

What to do though, rent out a place? What're your current ideas Mireille?

First I need to generate enough interest from people.

To do so, go to my Yahoo group, to the Polls section at:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Firefly_Serenity_UK/

Then I would have to check with Mutant Inc and/or Fox for permission to screen the DVD.

And in the meantime I would be looking for a venue to hold it in, and see how much it would cost to hire it out. Once I have an approximate number of people I can start taking orders for tickets by charging enough to cover the room hire for a day...

I'll have to see how it all pans out.

Why, would you like to help? Do you have any suggestions?

Well, I joined the Yahoo group, so hopefully that'll help some :).

As for Fox/MI, well MI seem a fairly cool company when it comes to these issues.

Fox, on the other hand... anyone who's seen that Christmas-theme episode of Family Guy will know what I mean

But I'm sure they'll be fine as it's generating revenue for them in the end with the additional movie-goers. I'm probably being more than a little pessimistic regarding Fox though .

Ideas... Well...

- Hotel suite? Cheapy hotel though if wanna keep it affordable.

- Renting out a large back room of a pub?
Food/Drink on site.

- Typical conference room somewhere?

Just some minor ideas that have probably already been covered.

Thanks for joining!

Yep, that is exactly what i was thinking about. But first of all I must get permission to screen the DVDs.

I have the postal address for Mutant Enemy, but does anyone have an email address?

I don't know about England, but in the U.S., as long as you're not making a profit on it, you can screen. If you make enough to pay the bills of renting the suite and/or pub space, that isn't profit.

If you intended to rent a theatre and charge folks 7 quid to get in and then run off to Great Yarmouth with the booty, then you'd be in trouble.

I spent three years in England, obviously, they weren't in law school.

That is exactly whay I was planning to do, just charge enough money to cover the rent. This isn't for profit, is for the fans! Thanks for the help

Ok dokey,

I shall be checking out venues soon. I have tried a couple of cinemas. You can hire a theatre for a day, but they don't play DVDs so I'm starting to think that it may have to be an actual conference centre or a big pub.

Any suggestions? As long as the place has an LCD projector we should be ok, cos i could bring my laptop and play the DVDs from there.

Anybody from Leeds or surrounding areas with any suggestions?

depends on the place, the bfi (british film institute) in london has a venue that can be hired out and plays dvds, and they aren't too concerned about you having the permission of the copyright holder, but it is a pretty small screening area, 50-100 people at a guess. my point being that smaller/arthouse type venues are more likely to be able to do dvds than a big multiplex.

Dear All

As you know from my previous posts, i have been playing with the idea
of holding a UK Shindig, where a few of us could get together and re-
watch ALL the Firefly episodes from beginning to end, and in the
right order ;-)!, to get revved up for the release of Serenity:the
movie.

I have started enquiring about venues in Leeds etc. And all the
venues need to pretty much know a date before they can start doing
calculations.

I was thinking about either February 2005 or March 2005, which is
basically one to two months before Serenity:the movie gets released
in the States, and also a month before the Serenity convention hosted
by Starfury Conventions. That way there would be enough time to save
up for the convention ;-)

This event is a non-profit venture. I would just like to do it for
the fans! Because I KNOW that i would love any excuse to get together
with fellow browncoats and fans alike and watch the whole series in
one go. But infortunately I would need to charge a minimum amount to
be able to pay for the hire of the venue. I PROMISE THAT I WILL MAKE
IT AS CHEAP AS POSSIBLE. This is on the basis that I can get at least
of 50 people attending. Surely we can manage that, right?

HERE COMES THE PART WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP:

FACT: As you know the Firefly series is 14 episodes, and i would say
that there are approximately 45 mins per episode.

QUESTION ONE:
Would you rather have it in February 2005 or March 2005?

QUESTION TWO:
Do you think we should split it into 2 days? (Bear in mind that it
would mean that those of you coming from outside Leeds would have to
get accomodation)

If this proves to be too expensive to make it worth while,
then...

QUESTION THREE:
Should we hold it on one day only, and play a selection of the most
popular episodes as voted by the fans?

PLEASE VISIT THE POLLS SECTION AND MAKE YOUR VOTE.

Feel free to just reply to this message.

Thank you for your patience reading this message ;-) and for your
help.

Keep Flyin'!

Technically, it's 15 episodes of 45 minutes each - Serenity is like a double episode.

Hate to be a pedant

This may be a dumb idea but.

I have a massive house. With a good set up in the living room.

This may be an option, depending on numbers. It can stand a hefty number of people, wouldn't cost anything and I wouldn't need to get permission - I don't need permission to watch firefly privately with a large group of friends at my house do I?

Plus of course I wouldn't have to get off my arse...

SLAYERFEST

I can tell you that in the UK you do have to get permission to show DVDs to an audience and it is very difficult to obtain permission if you are charging an entrance fee to watch them.

I beleive you would need to contact Fox concerning the showing of episodes as I had to contact Fox to obtain permission to show Buffy episodes at an event featuring cast members.

I contacted Fox Home Entertainment in the UK. They were willing to let me do it as I was not charging people to watch the episode, it was merely an add on to the experience and served as advertising for their products. If the primary purpose of an event is to view episodes they are less likely to be helpful.

On the up side I have a theatre in Grimsby where I hold Slayerfest and am looking to run any sort of Firefly event to test the water for future events at which we may meet crew from Serenity herself! I know that Grimsby is a long way from anywhere but people travel from all over the country to attend Slayerfest events here. I would hope they would be prepared to travel for Firefly too.

Incidentally we also have the capacity to show DVDs if we have permission to do so.

I'd absolutely be up for a shindig. It would be good to meet some browncoats in Cambridge as I don't know anyone there.

UK SHINDIG UPDATE:

I have phoned a few venues around the Leeds and Bradford area.

So far the best i can find is the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford. They have a fantastic conference room that can accommodate up to 80 people, theatre style. They have DVD capabilities, and a great balcony just in case people want a bit of fresh air.

If we were to get 50 people, the cost of the room would cost £15 per head (which i think it's quite reasonable) if we got 80 people then it would be around £9 per head.

They would preferably like to hire it out to us in February 200 because march is the Leeds/Bradford Film Festival. Plus it is very central to Bradfor town centre, so we could all go for a few bevvies afterwards :-).

On the other hand, I have been informed that they may be an issue with the copyrights from Fox regarding public viewing, so it looks like I am definetly going to have to double check the permission to screen it.

I wouldn't want ot get it all set up and then find out that we can't do it!

I shall keep you updated.

If anybody has any contact names or addresses for Fox Video UK, would oyu be so kind to get in contact with me?

Or any idea on copyright law ;-)?

Question for my friendly neighborhood british browncoats: I'm in London for a conference this week and have one whole day off on Wednesday. I want to go out and do something fun, but not too 'touristy'. Any suggestions?

Just done some googling, it seems that unlike music there's no one organisation that licenses video for public broadcast. You'll have to contact Fox directly.

The British Video Association has this info:
http://www.bva.org.uk/content.asp?id=5774&headline=71

I'd be definitely for a Leeds or Bradford meet, as I'm in Sheffield, not too far away.

Good luck!

It's just an idea, but is there a university -- large or small--in Leeds? I know that here there are several universities or community colleges that have big rooms with the ability to show movies on DVD. Some do that very thing as fund-raising for specific departments.
You'd probably do best checking with the art/media/that type of department to find out what the process would be to see if you can use the space. It can't hurt to check it out.
