Ok, who here has heard of this flick coming out in a couple of days? Has some big names, set in the 1930's, has a decent promo campaign going on here, AND a pretty neat web site to promote the movie... www.skycaptain.com ( man, that seems awfully blasphemous....hmmm ) Some of my views:

First, what is the studio ( Paramont, I think ) thinking about releasing a movie like this in Sept. It looks more like a summer fantasy/action pic, and here it gets released AFTER Labor Day here in the States.

Second, with no great, wide spread recognition for Sky Captain, would it be reasonable to compare this movie to our own BDM ?

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that, from what I hear, 'versal is going to aim at trying to get folks who know little or nothing about Firefly - the t.v. show and make Serenity a movie that stands alone, kinda sorta like Sky Captain. If anyone's seen the previews for Sky Capt, how do you think they'll compare to what we'll see for Serenity

I don't see these two very different movies appealing to the same audience at all.

From what I've seen of the ads for Sky Captain it is a bunch of big name stars in a slick 'arty' 1940's version of the future...
frankly it looks so weird in the previews that I was going to have to wait several weeks to see what the word-of-mouth is before sitting thru 2 hours of what could be incredibly lame foolishness.

Of course Universal hasn't started to advertise Serenity, so we don't know how it will be presented...I hope they will play up the humor and action...

When Star Wars was first released in 1977 it was something new and different, no one knew who the 'stars' were or who the director was...

I guess I'm not making much sense here...

Well, I'm not trying to compare the 2 directly in the sense that they'll be confused w/ one another. I guess the BDM can be viewed in more of a Star Wars sense, and not for the artsy special effects that is so evident in 'Sky Captain .. '. Reading the rewviews for Sky Captain, it got very good marks for its acting and visuals. It did get a 9/10 rating , while another review called it the next Van Helsing. Go figure.

CROWGUY

I saw a preview screening of Sky Captain the other night.

My verdict: GO SEE THIS MOVIE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

If you have any love whatsoever for old classic sci-fi and adventure movies, you'll love this film. It's a gorgeous, stylish, fun movie that's packed with little easter eggs for fans of old movies, and it's the kind of thing I would have gone nuts over when I was a kid and I would have driven my parents crazy with requests for all the cool toys (which don't seem to exist yet).

Help this movie take over the box office this weekend -- go see it!!

You are comparing apples and oranges. The are NO similarities whatsoever.

There are 2 stories going around regarding the delay:

Sky Captain was originally slated to be released the same time as Spider Man 2-The realease date was changed because they knew that no movie could compete with that.

The other being that they still had more work to do on the special effects.

Its that simple.

CYBERSNARK

I'm looking forward to it; it looks like a Captain Proton movie.

(Pity they couldn't get Robert Duncan Macneill to star. . .)

Count me in on the "I've been waiting to see this movie for months" group. It looks like a hoot, I have to say! As far as the big-name stars go, it's probably a case of no studios being likely to fund the incredible amount of CGI and other spfx UNLESS there were big names attached.

I'm not really interested. As far as pure green screen movies go, the only one I really wanna see is Sin City.

I would like to see Sky Captin, though I am much more excited about seeing a Japanese movie named Casshern (see trailer here http://www.casshern.com ) that looks similar to Sky Captin but has more of an anime style. Of course the BDM has the most excitement going for it for me

WOW
thanks for the link...I've seen the trailer for Sky Captain several times and have remained firmly undecided (altho the good reviews here certainly count strongly in it's favor)
but the trailer for Casshern look amazing!

I'm not sure my local video rental places will carry it...
I may have to just go ahead and buy it, if I can find it w/subtitles....
thanks again

Gee, I thought I had made it clear I wasn't comparing the movies directly to each other. My POINT was that both movies (action/sci fi types) will face similar challenges in trying to get audiences unfamilar w/ the story/characters to walk up and buy tickets. I think Sky Captain looks cool enough to go check it out on the big screen. Except for us loyal Browncoats, the general public will have little idea what Serenity is about, and it'll take good marketing and word of mouth ( by us folks ) to generate a HUGE box office for the BDM!

Actually, one key similarity - the budget, at least as reported initially. There are all sorts of numbers being thrown around, and I think they may have poured money into it in the last few months.

The key difference is of course that the movie is essentially being sold on star power, which won't be the case with Serenity (greatest respect to our BDHs, Alan is the "name" in the main cast).

I suppose they could sell it a little on the Buffy name - "from the writer and creator of"

I've seen the trailer and it looks interesting. However I can't get on the website. What's up with that?

I will reserve judgement until I have seen it.

All the people at my B/A boards are going to kill me when I say this, but maybe selling it on the Buffy and Angel thing isn't the best idea. Few people out there in the main media don't hear Buffy and immedietly think 'sucky show' (no pun intended). Their best bet is playing off of his recent hiring as director of X3 and his screenplay for X-Men.

Me. I'll go see it no matter what.

I'll be honest, I resisted watching Buffy for the longest time simply because I thought I hated the whole premise. Not into vamps or demons and the like, plus if you're over 30 and watching a show about HS kids ...well. Anyway, I got over myself and dig both Angel and Buffy.

Having said that, I don't think the BDM needs to ride on either of those show's coattails.

I saw the trailer in the theater and ditto what you've said. I really want to see this as I love old B&W sci-fi. Sadly , what I noticed from everyone else in the theater was smirking and other non favorable reactions. I got the impression that the movie is so stylized that the some of the audience didn't understand that it was supposed to look that way with the kind of old comic book effect.
I wanted to stand up in the theater and say so.
Oh well, I'll still be watching it.
