I was just watchin "Heart of Gold" again and during the sex scene where Nandi is riding on top of Mal I started wondering if the couple were having actual sex during the filming..

If they weren't having real sex then Nathan musta been pretty darn frustrated afterwards and most likely bolted straight to his trailer saying "i'll be in my bunk".

See, that's what we like to call acting. Love scenes like that are very difficult, in that it can be very intimate, but not at the same time. That's why you many times see stars involved in movies with romantic elements hook up for a while. It's very hard to do those things and not develope some sort of attraction or relationship. While I've not been in a scene as intense as that, I have been the lead male in a romantic comedy play before. In high school, no less. Those kisses weren't easy to get right. The fact that the girl was damn hot, an old friend didn't help.

If they were actually going at it, that would be called porn, not Firefly.

The woman who played Nandi is married and was at the time so I don't think that it was real.

Seems to me that the best way to make a sex scene believable is to do it for real. It doesnt have to be pornography! It depends on the edit.

Despite what everyone says here I still am not sure it was fake.. and NONE of you know for sure that it was.

Geez if you're gunna be scantily clad and grind your genital region on a member of the opposite sex's genital region I say HAVE SEX ALREADY.

In truth, there IS a case of this happening. In a movie starring Mickey Rourke, "Wild Orchid".

The final scene was supposed to be a sex scene between Rourke and the female lead and apparently both actors and the director believed the true intensity was not being conveyed. In the final take, Rourke and his co-star went ahead and stopped faking it. Through the use of clever camera angles and the like, it managed to escape being 'porn'.

Now. . .in all truth. . .I think the whole, "Man. . .we're just not GETTING it. . ." argument was complete go-se . . .Rourke just wanted to nail his co-star.

In a similar example. . .in the murder mystery movie "Basic Instinct" starring Sharon Stone and Michal Douglas. . .the two share a very intense scene where ALMOST nothing is left to the imagination. During scenes like this, the actress usually wears something called 'moleskin', which is a soft, flesh-colored patch that adheres to the skin (often used to cover blisters and such, because the moleskin is somewhat 'slippery'). And the male actor often wears nothing, or at the very most, a flesh-colored G-String. In a TV interview, Sharon Stone confessed that she was getting frustrated with dealing with the process of removing and re-applying the moleskin every single time she had to go to the bathroom and the like, so she simply removed it.

Chances are that Nathan was wearing some sort of undergarment, and so was Nandi. But yeah. . .I bet alot of that sweat was real. . .and I bet ol' Nate had to 'excuse himself' after they were done shooting. My wife suggests that Nandi had to do the same.

I hate to burst the bubble (particularly for my own self), but here's a little food for thought.

First, it's not like the crew sets a couple cameras on automatic and leave them running on the set while they duck out the side door. Couldn't afford to have anything go wrong with the cameras or the tape mid-stream because then they'd be spending more money and time to re-shoot. The director is there, and the camera operator(s), maybe a person for sound and lighting guy. That means Nathan and Melinda would be doing the deed in front of 4-5 people. That sound right to you?

Second, there's, what, three or four cut-aways in that scene? That means they filmed it at least that many times. They might have two cameras running at the same time, but I doubt they would have three or four. Not to mention, how completely awkward would that be for Nathan and Melinda?

Third, these kinds of scenes are choreographed to the Nth degree. Antonio Banderas talked about it on "Inside the Actors" studio. So did his wife, you know, what's her name The actors and director go through where the arms and legs go, how the hands should move, kiss her there, now kiss him here, ad infinitum. There's even dress rehearsals, and what you don't hear in the final cut - cuz if you are, then some editor somewhere should get fired - is the director actually saying those cues.

Finally, Nathan and Melinda are professionals, but not PROFESSIONALS, if you get my meaning. They're not getting paid enough to do it for real. I have no doubt Mickey Rourke did what Static says he did - he's Mickey Rourke. What I am saying is that it's nowhere near the norm.

Being married hardly precludes a person from having sex. Could be an open marriage, swingers and such. (we should all be so lucky)

Performance anxiety may be an issue for some.. not all.

Agreed, choreography is probably the norm, though there is something to be said for a natural, spontaneous performance being more convincing. I'm just sayin you/we dont KNOW exactly what happened during filming.. There could have been a pact.

Anyways its no big deal. It just crossed my mind so I thought i'd share the notion.. (anyone else have trouble pickin an appropriate emoticon?) muhahah

With that I will heartily agree. Although I'm thinking the pact involved them agreeing to not embarass each other, or just out and out laugh hysterically during filming.
