EMPIRE magazine is reporting on its website that the third X-Men movie has a screenwriter... and it's not, sadly, King Whedon.

Well, we wouldn't want to overtax him. Imagine how tragic it would be if JW burned out after only one Firefly movie.

Re the Xmen movie, they should as hell had better be doing the Pheonix Saga, and I hope they include the Hellfire Club and leave out the Shi'ar.

Ye gods, I hope he takes his sweet time.

There have always been screenwriters-du-jour, and right now Kinberg is it. Apparently he's the hotboy in Hollywood, despite having NO MOVIES RELEASES YET.

Already shooting: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," directed by Doug Liman... who may turn out a good movie, as the script for "Bourne Identity" wasn't GREAT... but we'll have to wait and see. Also, "XXX-2," yes, really. Directed by Lee Tamahori, of most recently "Die Another Day." This opens the same month as "Serenity."

In both cases, we'll have to wait and see. If these movies don't perform to expectations (and XXX-2 will not, because it stars Ice Cube... nothing against the Cube, but c'mon, Torque?!) ... Kinberg will be yanked off the project for the flavor-of-April 2004, and gee, I have no idea who that could be.

It's too early to tell. Maybe this guy is awesome. But only the studios have seen his stuff, and studios are, historically, usually, not that bright.

What I said above still stands (too early to tell, cautious optimism), but I found this under his name on the IMDB:

Quote:

Worked on numerous production rewrites, including Charlies Angels II: Full Throttle, Catwoman, Fantastic Four and Elektra.

Oh, well.

If Joss gets the directing gig for X3, I wouldn't put it past him to touch up (or rewrite) the script if he found any problems with it.

I don't think there is a chance in the world that Whedon will direct it now.
He said in Chicago that he would never direct someone else's writing...
but actually I no longer feel badly about it.

Joss just had this great experience of bringing his own vision (creative vision of his characters in his story with his direction) to the screen, and Universal stayed out of it, without watching over his shoulder and making suggestions.
It was the best experience he ever had (cause I know the networks interfered all the time w/BtVS, Ats, and particularly Firefly!).

So why would he want to be involved w/the X-men franchise, where he would have all kinds of studio heads, producers, and other suits leaning over his shoulder? And he would be stuck with the already cast characters whether he likes it or not....

No, I would really rather Joss stick to his own work, creating his own universes...

Well, he DID do it once... there was an episode of Angel that he directed but didn't write. I forget which season, but it involved the red-headed telekinetic girl.

Interesting, I didn't know about those quotes from Joss. I'd hope that he'd direct it anyway, for several reasons:

He could make a great movie.

He's got a great handle on the characters (from what I've read in Astonishing X-Men).

It could help bring more people to Firefly.

It could help more Firefly movies get made (and maybe the show back on the air--I know it's not likely, but I'd love to have 20+ hours of Firefly a year--I keep hoping if the movie does well enough, somebody will buy the TV rights from Fox).
