i DO aim to misbehave

UPDATE:
Input from others has brought up the following ideas for our group name (rather than just Firefly Meetup) -

Toasting the Mudders
Minnesota Brown Coats (spelling intentional )
Minnesota Independents

There's even symbols already rendered for the second and third option - scroll down further to Hell's Kitten's post to take a look.

If you've got a favorite (or another idea) let us know. Whatever we end up calling ourselves, we'll be meeting again soon to continue the tradition!

So what's this all about?

The first healthy-sized meetup of Minnesota Browncoats was held on Saturday, November 6. We had nine people brave the Minneapolis traffic to take up a nice little alcove of space in the Spyhouse Espresso Bar not three blocks from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. We had folk from all over the place, and both sides of the river. Most asked, "is this the Browncoat meeting?" but I think it was Knibblet who set the tone for the group when she came in and asked, "Are we toasting the Mudders?" We talked all manner of story theory throughout the Joss universe and beyond. That's how we got some unsuspecting online user to ask us if we were a vampire cult. Fun stuff, I tell you!

Plans are already being set in motion to get together again soon, and possibly on a monthly basis, although the holidays may prove problematic. The when and where still needs to be worked out, so stay tuned for more details.

My personal thanks goes out to Dre who wore his Blue Sun T-shirt. I was a lot later getting there than I planned due to an unexpected visit from my own folks - quick trip to the VA for an unplanned check up because Dad had a rhythm the local doctor didn't like; long story, but he's okay - and did NOT have the sign I promised.

And I'm thinking rather than giving the group a name, we could just give the gathering a name. "Toasting the Mudders" has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

DRE

Works for me. Then we can work on a big cloth banner to hang above our gatherings; one that says, "Toasting the Mudders"...and people will look in wonder and ask about it and we will slowly convert the state until all is brown and shiny.

To any MN Browncoats who were not present: come on by. We need our Independant Army! 8D

Shiny shiny shiny.

IKIYO.

It was great meeting the group and I'm looking forward to the next event.

For all of those that skipped the bonfire, the night was gorgeous, the fire warm and the smores ... all mine. Mwah ha ha ha!!!

As I said, I'd love to host a viewing at 'Chez Knibblet'. It'll give me a reason to clean my house.

:) Nice meeting everyone.

HELL'S KITTEN

Yep, for my first "wander out and meet up with a bunch of strangers in a strange place" event, it was really quite nice. Too loud, though, as I couldn't shout over the music / talking with a sore throat. I look forward to the next time.

Yeah, heh, she really threw me off with that question. Honestly, my first thought was "Why on earth would I want to toast a bunch of dumbasses on some mudball?" Oh. Right. Firefly.

Again, I'm thinking dumbasses on a mudball. Wouldn't "Toasting the Independents" be a little more appropriate...? Maybe I'm just being contrary cuz I'm sleepy. ANYway, I had actually made these little designs, but didn't print them out cuz I'da felt too geeky (moment of introspection / silence to fully comprehend that statement in current context)...

and

The top group of characters on both graphics is a rough phonetic spelling for "Minnesota" - mínzú tè - pronounced meen-dsoo-teh - which loosely translates to "Exceptional Nation." I could have found a better phonetic spelling, but the translation would have been bad. The bottom group of characters on the first graphic is the translation for Brown Coat - zōngsède shàngyī. The bottom group of characters on the second graphic (my preference) is the translation for Independent - wú dǎngpài rénshì - which actually translates to "non-party personage." And as I continue typing, I'm wondering why I'm posting this. I must have had a stressful day at work and my brain switched off. Anyhow, the bottom line is this: (to be said in the same way Mal said it to Ath in Shindig) Nice t'meetcha.

HONORBOUND

Wow, you guys are making me sorry that I couldn't make it. It sounds like a lot of fun was had by all. (Stupid in-laws and their moving day...)

And Hells Kitten, don't feel stupid. I think those pics are awesome and very ingenious!

AWWWW, I did not know you were sick - I knew I should've found a way over to that side of the group. It was loud, wasn't it? Hard to hear, took a lot of work to project and keep everyone included.

I like honesty. And personally, being a Scottish-Yank my own self, I like the idea of "Toasting the Independents" too. We could still use it on a banner, as Dre suggested, and keep the group name to ourselves. We could even add the Chinese to the banner. So far as I'm concerned, it's whatever the group decides, but may I say these designs are AWESOME. I like the second one too - "Minnesota Independents," even if it stands a good chance of getting us confused with the polical group, at least we won't get into that "Brown Coat" vs. "Browncoat" issue. I also read a thread here recently that indicated "Browncoat" was a significantly derogatory term for "Independents" like "blue belly" was for the Union soldiers and "purple belly" for the Alliance. I'm not quite liking Browncoat as much as I used to.

DACUTE1

Hi, I still pretty indifferent about what we name the group. Toasting the Mudders references only one episode but there's a ring to it.

I just wanted to add that my dance performance was switched to April 30, so yay, I'm now free the 22nd!!! Any more information about an opening night Shindig? (12:01 show?) Suppose we have a little time yet.

- Dacute1

Kaylee: Wash, tell me I'm pretty
Wash: Were I unwed I would take you in a manly fashion
Kaylee: 'Cause I'm pretty?
Wash: 'Cause you're pretty
