PURPLEBELLY

Fear eats the soul. Cobb will find it difficult to confront the demons of his childhood abuse until he finds a supportive relationship that he is unable to repulse. Sadly for the character, Simon is fully engaged with his sister. Happily for Whedon, the narrative benefits from Cobb's conflicted personality.

Purplebelly's Denouement allows for the resolution of Cobb's dilemma once River is on the witness-protection programme. Only Purplebelly believes this

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think we see some progression in Jayne's character in the episodes we did see, especially after Ariel. The scene in the air lock w/ Mal shows that Jayne can feel remorse and that he actually cares what the crew think of him. Given time I think we would have seen that there is more to Jayne than just a hired gun lusting for money.

EMBERS

I was watching Jaynestown w/friends last night and I was struck how even that show had made an impression on him.

He was being reminded that most people place loyalty to their shipmates as a priority,
(something he certainly hadn't shown 4 yrs before Canton)
He knew that Mal considered his shipmates to be a priority....

of course Jayne hadn't considered Simon & River as shipmates...
so Mal pretty much taught him his mistake after Ariel

Jayne has a long way to go;
At some point I thought Joss said that the bad guys wear hats...
you notice that the Alliance guys all wear hats
and on board Serenity only Jayne ever seems to put on a hat...
of course his hats are humorous....
and Joss has traditionally used humor as a way to defang his evil creatures
and allow them to transition into good characters
(witness Spike on BtVS)

But I'm expecting Jayne to continue to be the sand in everyone's shoe
in the movie

when we finally get to see the movie

OT: Purplebelly's Denouement doesn't really exist as a body of work. It's more my recollection of my own postings, entitled in the hope of respectability.

Googling for it gives these links http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=4&t=5572 http://www.fireflyfan.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=6102 among others, which may be my early attempts to grace the rag-bag with a title, but are by no means definitive texts; they're all contrary and brief It's just an attempt to present something other than the High School idea of happy-ever-after that seemed to be current at the time of posting. I make Cobb's end happy, because he has lived his life in fear.
Quote:

Jayne is the one character who can live happily-ever-after as the majordomo of Simon's loft apartment which he has tastefully decorated in the fashionable Serenity mode ...
OT: probably the major subsequent notion is that Simon Tam is disowned and he and River are replaced in the dynasty by another set of Gabriel and Regan clones who are betrothed etc, so without the Family's sponsorship he doesn't enter the Elect.

Yeah, I think Jayne is growing as a person. I don't really think he was all that bad to begin with. We saw in 'Serenity' (the pilot)that he cared about Kaylee's wellbeing and there have been numerous times since then that he's shown he has a heart. It's well-buried and perhaps a little bit shrivelled, but he's got one.

"Gorramit Mal... I've forgotten my line."
