I don't want to point the finger at any particular TV network like the Faux-network, but let's say Firefly is on air and it is on air because of the backing from a conservative network, this TV station could be any it could be Australian, it could be the BBC it could be NBC, Fox, the Scifi channel whatever...

...and at this network there are a bunch of Fat-Cats the type that if they don't like or understand the show then the public mustn't like it...so much for freedom of choice

So maybe this post IS about those Faux - Exec idiots
What epsiodes do you think made them turn away from the show ??

The Train Job ??
We have that really clear shot of the US-Chinese flag, torture from the fearsome mobster named Adelei Niska, and Mal acts more like a terrorist rather than an Alliance hero.

Safe -
More violent action with a battle with cattle dealers leaves Book near dead,
the Doc and his sister abducted by hillbillies who spend a lot of their time reading too much from some weird version of the Bible perhaps and shouting Burn, Witch, Burn !! This type of topic maybe wouldn't go well with the fatcats at the network.

Jaynestown -
Alliance look very bad, Rich live very wealthy, we have fake hero worship, and people living in slavery... another subject those at Faux might not like.

War Stories
Here we have total blasting, shooting, torture...the works, however if you watch an Arnie movie you're likley to see them same except the story and action won't look as cool as Firefly, I won't even make a remark about Arnold's dialogue. Quiet possible that some may not have liked the extreme violence here but you'll see the same from an Arnold film or a real world news-broadcast.
Two other things to metion in this episode Inara's Gay/Lesbian event with the Councillor
and we have Mal beating the crap out of an old Man Beat that old SOB Niska !!

So what Episode do you think made them go
'Excuse me' !

in my humble opinion, i do not think it was violence, sexuality or anything like that which got fox to pull the plug. given some of the things that fox airs (the swan, temptation island etc), i think they have an extremely high tolerance for anything.

i think it was a combination of things. sci-fi shows have (in my lifetime) not done particularly well on broadcast, non-cable networks. some of the ones that came and went were space:above and beyond and earth 2. it may be that the genre just does not have wide appeal like lawyer, police, doctor or family drama type shows. also, firefly was the type of show that kind of required a loyal fanbase from the beginning with the large story arcs. granted, during the run of the show, there were very few large stories like this, but just look at buffy or angel and you can see that story arcs can consume an entire season or more. this could cause programming executives to cringe a little because they may think that if you do not get the viewers within the first few episodes, you will never get them. this may or may not be true. finally, i think that fox was never particularly behind the project from the beginning. of course, the best example of this is the placing of the show in a friday night time slow. also, in the commentary on the episodes, joss whedon talks a lot about how "fox wanted this" or "fox wanted that" like the no widescreen, not airing the pilot, pushing the writers for a complete episode in two days. it kind of makes you think that fox simply wanted to have something with joss whedon's name on it but they never really stopped to think if they actually wanted the SHOW, not just the name.

anyway, this is just my opinion.
