I saw the re-run of the Battlestar Galactica mini-series on Sunday. I was thinking to myself, "Why would Serenity and our beloved crew be on Caprica?" So, how's about some wild (or not so wild) guesses as to why they were there?

Depends on when Battlestar takes place.

If Battlestar is like thousands of years in the future, maybe the BDHs, at the end, launched Serenity into deep space, and it drifted for centuries until it reached Caprica and a salvage crew grabbed it and fixed her up.

The craft shown on BSG is one of the thousands of freighters of the Firefly class, it isn't Serenity.

Well, like my original post says, speculation. So, work with me here, I'm speculating that it is Serenity. So, once again, why do you think they're on Caprica? Indulge me.

Okay, Serenity is on Caprica because they have the best strawberries. It turns out that Kaylee is actually a Cylon, who is malfunctioning. Mal knows this, but he doesn't care that she's a machine. She is a member of his crew and he will do anything to save her.

Strawberries have a complex mixture of glucose and acids that provide symptomatic relief of her illness. These symptoms include, but are not limited to: being greasy, even when not working on machinery (it's coming from her pores), being hopelessly optimistic (malfunction of logic circuits), and having the hots for Simon (logic circuits, targeting systems, and wetware failure). Ultimately, they will have to have her repaired at a Cylon facility -- which will provide thrilling hijinks in a later episode -- but the 3 tonnes of strawberries they get for her on Caprica is enough to 'keep flying' for a month or two.

That's easy! Simon is one of the verse's best surgeons, and they needed him to perform a sex change on Starbuck! He's actually had some experience with this. Keep this to yourself, but Jayne used to be a woman, but now he's got "man parts"!!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Strictly speaking, we never did see too much of the BSG home planets. Perhaps Caprica is just another name for Sihnon? ;)

Of course, we don't know for certain if it's our big damn crew on board. Logically, it's not, because of the sheer number of Fireflys in service...

i like to think BSG is the future of firefly. Earth is still a memory and warning legend in our verse. Now, by BSG time, it is a fable. The firefly transport on Caprica/Shinon has been bought by some other lost soul from a junkyard and refurbished for a new life of sky pirating. Unfortunately, the firefly class transport did not make it to the BSG FTL jump fleet (lacking FTL technology). So, they will continue to eek out an existance by traveling to worlds in search for survivors. Eventually, the crew will find their way back to the earth that was---a year before the BSG survivors do.

They are able to avoid the cylons becuase they are small and crafty. They meet little alien resistance in their travels. Most of the highjinks occur with found human colonies or spacecraft. Years of traveling at slower than light, lead them to retrofit a FTL engine.

HELL'S KITTEN

Okay, so this won't be anywhere near as good as Zoid and his "wetworks failure," but I can still aspire to such greatness.

Blue Sun is a mega-conglomerate, with it's subsidiaries ranging from canneries to clothing to cybernetics. (I didn't mean in an alphabetical sense; all those just happened to start with C because I'm tired and can't think of anything else.) It wouldn't be a big surprise to find Blue Sun behind the creation of the Cylons. And, if they're still using a Windows based operating system (like they were in Trash), there should be absolutely no surprise whatsoever that the Cylons are all buggered up - or evolved, whatever - and turned against their makers.

Since River was allegedly one of Blue Sun's projects, she knows about Blue Sun's the Cylons and by association, she "sees" the Cylons' plan. Your favorite BDHs rush to Caprica in hopes of warning the Colonial President. But, since we're dealing with the Whedonverse, they get there too late and hilarity ensues.

From Bushwhacked - Commander Harken
"Forty thousand of these old wrecks in the air and
that's all they give us? Well, I won't have any
surprises on a routine stop. We run into these two,
we shoot first. Brass can sort it out later. "

Our Serenity isn't as unique as we'd like to believe. At least on the outside. What's important in her is what's inside.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "
