I am a great Firefly devotee. I overcame my fear of technology to find out what happened to the show yes i braved the world wide web in order to do so. I found this delightful site which i visit quite frequently. I have noticed that many of you seem to be quite the technophiles so i was hoping you could help a sister out and tell me how to download a torrent. i just caught an episode of the new Battlestar Gallactica and LOVE IT but now i need to know what happened in the mini series i rang blockbuster and was told it wasn't available to rent.i go to school full time while working full time to pay for the full time school so $ is tight and i spent my dvd budget converting 4 professors to firefly. So any help would be bery much apprieciated. thanks hands cramping must stop typing.

I didn't think anyone really wanted a link to some pet online DVD seller of mine so I took the post down .. I have yet to try dloading anything from bittorrent, edonkey, etc and all the rest as I am still on dial up and I do not really have a large hard drive ... so I'm not the expert on that

for those who really want the post back up then I'll do it .. I found one of the cheaper sellers of DVDs had the BG Miniseries for $20 and change .. heres the link http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=MCA024466

There are others who know this better than me, but since no one else has taken a shot yet, I will. First you need to download bittorrent:
http://bittorrent.com/ (If you want to know how it works, check out Bram Cohen's introduction.) Then you go to a website and click on the torrent you want to download.

From there, I get confused. I think you can usually play it in your media player by clicking on it...if it's a zip file, you will need WinZip or an equivalent to unzip it. If it's a tv show that you're downloading, there can be complications in getting it to play. I've been trying to download episodes from Lost, and I've been having problems both finding working sites and playing what I've downloaded. If anyone can elucidate, please do.

The new BSG is fantastic, and the whole series has long been available via bittorrent files. I find good source at www.torrentreactor.net. You can definitely see the whole series this way, without waiting until the end of the U.S. airing season.

Ok, so here's how to do it:

As one previous poster said, you need to start by downloading the bittorrent software, which is easily done from www.bittorrent.net. Once you do that you will need to install it by doubleclicking on the file you download, which will launch the self-installer.

Once you have bittorrent on your computer, then it is a matter of finding the movie, TV show, music, or whatever that you want. Various web sites (see below) host seed files that will let you download what you are looking for--some web sites have more to choose from than others. When you go to the site, you need to look for what you are interested in (usually by using the site's search feature to search under title). When you find what you want, you have to download the seed file--this is a small file that will then hook you into the P2P network that is the source for the program you want.

So, let's say you go to www.torrentreactor.net, and find episode 4 (there are 13, by the way) of Battlestar Galactica. You would download the small file that will let you download the whole episode. Once you've downloaded the small file, you doubleclick it to launch it; it then automatically starts downloading. You'll see a dialogue box that tells you how things are going--i.e., if it's connected, the download speed, upload speed, when it's done, etc.

Be warned; these files can take a loooong time if you don't have a fast fast connection. If you are using dialup, absolutely do not bother--it would take you weeks to get anything.

Now, some good sites for finding torrents:

http://www.orbdesign.net/bt.php
http://www.btefnet.net/
http://www.fulldls.com/
http://www.tv-swarm.com/
http://www.bi-torrent.com/
http://isohunt.com/
http://torrentspy.com/
http://thepiratebay.org/
http://torrentreactor.net/
http://filelist.org/
http://newtorrents.info/
http://elitetorrents.org/
http://lokitorrent.com/
http://www.lickmytaint.com/bt.html
http://www.420joint.com/bt/
http://www.torrentsearch.com/
http://www.bitconsole.com/

As a disclaimer; I only use bittorrent for content that is otherwise unavailable, or that I could get for free anyway--that is, if I missed last night's West Wing, but could have taped it off my TV, then it's hardly illegal for me to download it to watch; it's just another way for me to record it for home viewing. I do not use it to get free content that is available for purchase--as, say, Firefly is, now that it's on DVD. I don't want to rip off the legitimate producers of things I like by denying them their rightful earnings.

Good luck. I'm NOT a technogeek and I find bittorrent very usable. . . .

The DVD for sale is for the miniseries only--it already aired, in 2003. The new series is still airing, and presumably will not be available for purchase on DVD for quite some time yet--2006 at the earliest, I'd guess. . . .
