Not exactly new news, but recently re-reported on Cinescape.com, for those who missed it earlier:

The Sci-Fi Wire had a chance to chat with Joel Silver this past Saturday, at WonderCon, about his "Wonder Woman" project. Silver told them he is interested in having Josh Whedon write and direct the new film version.

Silver is quoted as saying, "'Donner reinvented Superman after George Reeves. It's time to do that to Wonder Woman... The idea is to try to find a way to make it, and I thought Joss has a great idea, because he understands a kind of female superhero character, and also he's great at what he does. So I'm trying to find the best way to do it. ... We're working our way through it.'"

Oh I hadn't seen this, thanks for posting it!

That'd be neat! I hope it works out - I'm sure the Warchowski brothers would be able to reassure Joss about working with Joel Silver as a producer!

So who's this "Josh" they're thinking of?

I'm worried that the movie would be overlooked as yet another comicbook that hollywood is trying to cash in on. Even if Joss does something great with it, will people show up at the theaters?

TV Guide's been covering it since December.

1st article:

2nd article:

I say, if it has to be done, let Josh() do it.

In one article, they throw Sarah Michelle Gellar's(ugh) hat into the ring. In the latest, they put forth Kim Basinger(ew) and Jessica Biel(scream!)

I think, Zeek, that if Joss makes it, people will come. They always have. Just not...a lot of them.
Seriously, coming off of the Buffy franchise, people will definitely come.

That's debatable.

I've been following the Wonder Woman talk for years. I want it to be the best it can be. And just thinking Joss could be onboard is fantastic. There have been tons of names tossed around for a very long time.

I volunteer to be Wonder Woman if any of the actresses are busy. I even have my own costume.

Today on the radio this morning they were talking about it being down to Kim and Jessica Biel....

Frightening. Well... hmm....

Yeah. Frightening. Although, if it did come down to the two of them, I think I would almost prefer Kim just because Kim is a more mature woman who I could still imagine making it work and the younger heroine thing has been done to death recently (Buffy, Elektra, Jessica's character in Blade III). Granted, if they can be considering two actresses, one of whom is what, less than half the age of the other?, tells me that there surely can't be even much of a script yet. Still, who knows, put a good writer/director/producer on it and anything can happen.

I still wanna see Marina Sirtis do it.

Can Biel or Basinger actually even do a Greek accent?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would like to submit for the role of the Amazon Princess the lovely and talented Monica Belluci:

If they *really* want to reinvent Wonder Woman, why not get Gina Torres? According to Joss' and Nathan's commentary in the pilot, she's homely, midgety, and utterly unconvincing as a soldier, but I think she could pull it off. :)

on edit: Failing that, I second the Monica Bellucci idea. Kim Basinger is all wrong.

Gina would make an excellent Wonder Woman! I remember a thread a while back where Gina was proposed and it seemed she was a favorite choice.

As I see it, we need a woman with some maturity to her look. We need a woman with classic and/or exotic beauty. Diana is a princess, and not just an average princess (*snort* average princess?) she is an Amazon. I think Gina is a wonderful idea. Monica, another excellent choice.

No girl-next-door types...please no girl-next-door types.

I guess that takes me out of the running....wondergirl perhaps?

TWG, I never said *you* were out of the running - I should have been clearer about that. :) But if we're going with a less-recognizable actress, I nominate my wife.

Definitely Gina... finally, a woman who actually looks like she could be an Amazon princess!

OK, just to twist this thread up a bit - who would be the worst choice to play Wonder Woman? Aside from the obvious absurdities like, say, Roseanne Barr or Adam Baldwin (I think Adam's awesome, but he's no Amazon).

Apologies to any fans of hers there may be here, but I'd have to go with Julia Roberts as my last choice. I haven't heard her name crop up in connection with this project but it seems she's floated for every high-profile female role. I never managed to find any charm in her.

Joss has a history of casting actors that we've never heard of. He also has a history of getting it right. In my perfect world they would let Joss take care of this crucial part of the project. Maybe he would surprise us again with a fine unknown actress.

I've never actually thought about Gina Torres as Wonder Woman. And I think it would totally ROCK! Ohmigosh. It sounded so weird until I pictured it. That would just be...so cool.

I also love the idea of Monica Belluci.

I don't know how old Wonder Woman is, but (I'm ducking) do you think either of them are a little too mature? I am actually BIG fans of them both, but when you cast an actress for a role she should have done 10 years ago, you get Erica Durrance as Lois Lane.
Very talented girl(ahem), but she looks about 35, and she's playing 19.
Anybody who watches still Smallville knows what I'm talking about. I have recently decided to no longer waste my time and energy hoping it will get better, or clinging to the little dots of sunlight that used to occasionally emerge. But that's bitterness for another place.

I like the idea of unknowns too, Grue. I think it should be done a lot more often.

Wow, most of my post is about Smallville. Sorry.

SKYDANCE

First and foremost, Wonder Woman has to be someone who can move well. Nothing ruined the TV series more for me than the way Lynda Carter walked ... except, perhaps, for how goofy she looked when she pretending to deflect bullets.

Yah, she had a pretty face. But fight? Please. Now Gina ... Gina can fight.

Joss's people have a history of coming up with names we've never seen before, but who are simply amazing. Gellar (Buffy), Hannigan (Willow), MARSTERS (Spike), Boreanaz (Angel), Landau (Drusilla), Fillian, Tudyk, Glau, Staite ... what an amazingly talented group he has worked with over the years.

I sincerely hope he'd pick someone who is right for the part, instead of letting the studio pick someone who has a name (to draw crowds).

One of my favorites: Hudson Leick ("Callisto" on the Xena TV show) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0500098/
