I was having a discussion about Firefly with a friend of mine the other day, and he posed an idea that I hadn't thought about before. I really want the show to come back on the small screen, because I feel there is so much to explore. He agreed with my statement in TERRIBLE NEWS SERENITY DELAYED thread, that there is still so much left to explore, but his major point was that if Joss had 4, 5, 6 seasons to write episodes, it wouldn't have the same effect as if he had... 1 or 2. Reason being, if he had 5 or 6 seasons, he needs that much material to stretch out over that time, so things would progress much slower. Maybe we'd find out about what happened to Summer, but it would be slow and drawn out. We'd find out about Shep, and more about the doctor and whatnot, but it would be all paced, and could not come out as well as if Joss had to explore these ideas in a much shorter time.

So I pose the question, do you think the show should come back on the small screen, or should Joss do 2 more movies, and wrap it all up then? I am so conflicted, because I think to myself, what if every episode was as good as the first collection that we have gotten to see? What if it's not drawn out? Can he really convey all that he needs/wants to in 3 movies (6 hours) as opposed to over 100 hours if it was on TV?

My friend said that Joss was writing Firefly as if it was going to be cancelled at any time, which was why it was so good... is this true? I don't know, because he could have had all the ideas for the first set of episodes laid out, and it could have just been happenstance that they were that good.

Ask this again after we have all had a chance to see how the story progresses in the movie. I have an idea that you are right, but with so many hings apparently not really being mentioned in the movie (ie, Blue Sun), maybe he could have used the time a television series allows. I know he prefers the television style, if for no other reason then he likes his characters room to breathe. I do too, but a well-written movie (or three) could be better.

i think joss could keep firefly going for a long time. you only have to watch buffy and angel to see that he knows how to let a show evolve. i'm sure he was already planning where the show would go in later seasons. that's the genius of joss! well, part of ot anyways:)

As he mentioned this weekend at Wondercon. No One is even talking about it returning to television.

I understand everyone's angst but without Joss (who doesn't seem to be interested) it isn't Firefly.

My preference, which is definitely not going to happen, is for Serenity and its sequels to be a hugely commercially successful block-buster movie franchise which will contain nothing of interest to me but provide Whedon with sufficient comfort that he can complete the Firefly narratives in a low-capital, fan-rich medium like comic-books.
Ain't gonna happen

Small screen forever! With 9 - NINE - core characters no way three movies will be enough, and nothing needs to be spread out too thin to tell all the stories about these people in 5 or 6 seasons.

PS Imho Joss' best work is on Buffy season 2 and 3 where there was no imminent canceling hanging over his head.

The question certainly is a difficult one. Should the film be a commercial success, the amount of money it makes might make further film sequels more lucrative than a TV series.

Conversly, should the film do OK (we all know that it will at least break even) and make a small profit, this may provide impetus to return to the small screen, gather a larger fan base and then do another feature film or two or three.

Looking back historically, Star Trek stayed on TV for a bit, then re-emerged as a feature film and then a re-imagined series TNG, etc. etc. so perhaps Firefly could make a return of this kind?

Then there are the actors themselves. Will they be willing to return to the rigors of filming a weekly TV series or the couple of months shooting a film? And JW might get tired of the concept and move on.

As a fan, I would like to see the whole cast return to the small screen. Please. Pretty please. In a universe as rich and vibrant as the one gifted to us by JW, surely, stories abound and need to be told.

I think there are a lot of stories to tell about these people. They all have such rich histories, that I can't imagine that there would be any shortage of stories or directions.

I don't think Joss is disinterested. I think he's being realistic. There's no reason to keep his hopes up with how horribly this fantastic show was treated by the networks.

Just let Serenity come... and see where it goes from there.

My guess is that Joss would like to do as many movies with these characters as he can. That probably means three at most. Given the potential of the setting and number of characters, I can see how television may serve this concept better than movies. I'll be grateful for whatever we get but I think continuing series is the way to go. But if Joss would rather do movies--that's fine with me.
