Just wondering....SERENITY: film or digital?

This may be somewhat alarmist of me but I take it SERENITY was shot on Film and not digitally as with the Star Wars movies....?

Can anyone confirm this - just I have a preference for film and am looking forward to some dramatic shots and beautifully lit sets :?

I'm taking a wild guess and saying it was shot digitally. Cleaner, prettier looking shots. Film is slowly being replaced and if you're Sci-Fi, your more likely to be shot digital. Our Panasonic DVX 100As in class shoot digital with film like quality so you never know.

A lot of the sets are probably added in post processing like in the series.

Would one format be more versatile that the other?

Oh that's what I feared. While I have no problem with Digital, I much prefer Film - especially for the atmoshpere I'm hoping Joss whould go for.... I know it's an antiquated mode of thinking, but that old fashioned grain is goldust when you watch old films... I'm just not a fan of the cleaner, prettier shots you mentioned. It's a personal feeling but that look in say a film like ALIEN is what I was hoping for with SERENITY

No I guess not.... I do feel though that film has a quality, which for the life of me I've never been able to define, that somehow feels 'illuminated' y'know like light is really passing through it, which is where it's vitality and magic originates from.... I dunno maybe I need to lie down.

Those star wars films had no 'life' no 'soul'
within them - uh maybe it's just me.....

Yeah I know - they have all these effects and filters that they layer on but somehow I'm more conscious of these when I see them - perhaps because they're so grandiose, that the 'make-believe' seam is ripped slightly. I'm sure it wont spoil my fun of the film - but y'know those famous shots that cinema history is rife with, like the shot in Lawrence of Arabia where Omar Sherif is approaching the camera from out of the heat haze of the desert ? Well you just can't immitate that. You have to actually 'film' the event.

Anyway like I said I'm sure I'll enjoy the film - I'm just a sucker for the magic of cinema I guess.

I have seen one screening and would have to say it was shot on film - The work was not colour corrected at the time or the print cleaned up. Also there was no green screens & some SFX was to be added later which would have been different if it was filmed didgitally.

im just spit balling but its shot on film i know this because i have a peace of it that i won in a fancy dress contest unfortunatly its not actual pics of the film itself as they were still eddating that when i was at the con instead its the test card it shows serenty and has some kinda groovy little graphics i assume helps the guy to focus the film right or something

well im going to get it window mounted and have every one sighn around it hopefully the few cast members that arnt at serenity will be at dragon con so i can get every ones name on it
and the event was white room i think seans con were you had summer, morinna and nathan i didnt win any of the proper prizes wich were signed certificates ... i went as the celler deamon "the rath" from angel and whilst i was finnishing the costume in my room i painted a heart tattoo on my arm with morrinna name in it and i made sure she saw it as i was walking around and i got lucky as i got the piece of film and a very nice big glossy photo signed by nathan and morrinna

I'm a film major and avid filmgoer, so I know all about the pros and cons about shooting digitally.

All I have to say about it is that right now, even though I shoot digitally with me wedding videos, and that digital will eventually replace film, I'm all for film. Film has an organic, chemical quality to it that digital really diesn't have. Like the bit rate for something shot digitally is considerably lower than normal film, which is why it looks so distorted and sounds tinny when it's blown up on big screen.

But I have seen advances in films shot digitally. Everyone makes a big deal about STAR WARS and Rodriguez and von Trier as digital filmmakers, but the one digitally shot movie that really impressed me was COLLATERAL. I was so swept up with the rich visuals of the movie, that it was only when I looked really close at it that I noticed it was a digital film.

Until I honestly cannot tell the difference between film and digital, I'm still all for film.

According to Michael Mann (director), on his commentary track, only the night exteriors were shot on high-definition video, because film has little depth of field under low-light conditions. The daylight opening sequence was shot on film.

And every studio movie is edited digitally -- there is no more end-to-end analog product.
