My theory? Brook is the brother/son/father/close realitive of a prominant Alliance general/president/etc. Brook went the religious route in life, but that doesn't mean that his family wouldn't be very upset with any solidier that let their realitive die.

Book is a billionaire who secretly fund Alliance secret projects such as the one who made River gone mad. Hmmm...

My guess is that he's formerly Alliance military intelligence but (agreeing with an earlier post) saw some of the things the corrupt Alliance was instigating and got religion in a big way. He retired to the Abbey to contemplate what he'd seen and try to make peace with his sins... and now he's out in the world again.

Nonetheless, he still knows quite a bit about the seamier side of civilization (as Niska certainly has been around for decades), as well as having a well-versed knowledge of weaponry.

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.

General/(whatever is one level below.) Ideally, he'd be the Alliance officer at Serenity, but I just say that so it's nice and neat.

Yeah!
i agree, it seems like he had some connections to the army, maybe he was fighting in war, maybe on the other (winning) side in the battle of serenity, or maybe he just saved once the live of someone important so he is treated with respect....

I'll feel better about my speculations once I see "Serenity," but I'd agree that he's high-ranking Alliance military, perhaps special forces or covert ops, who got tired of killing and got religion.

My opinion is that Book was either a General or a politician for the Alliance who resigned his position after the battle of Serenity.

From my observations of the character and the story of Firefly right, I would guess that Book was instrumental in the Alliance defeating the Independents at Serenity. However, he saw the atrocities committed by the Alliance during that final battle and feels a certain amount of guilt. He turned to religion and now follows a path of peace.

Well everything seems to suggest the military-theory but i wouldnt be so sure. One thing that i noticed about FF is that everything that seems to be quite logic turn out exactly the other way aroun. Take this "kicking-Crow-into-the-engine-scene" normally you would expect the good guy not to kill other people, specially when they are unarmed, but we become part of a unwilling funny and quite shocking situation when the guy just disappers in the running engine. So what i basically want to say that it can be that Joss make Book being something we would not expect him to be coz former army officer seems to be too easy to guess but well.... we shall see.

He knows too much about weapons and war stuff to not have some connection to the army.

Every large bureaucracy (the government of the Alliance) certainly has rogue agencies that are supported by secrecy, money and power. Some military or secret service agencies (eg. The Blue Gloves agents) act in the interests of furthering their agenda (state security etc.) Perhaps Book is part of a rival organization that secretly works to obfuscate the Blue Gloves goals of capturing River. It is not unusual for rival departments to actively work against each other. In Canada for decades the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and CSIS (Canadian Secret Intelligence Service) clashed over jurisdiction and power, much like I imagine the CIA and the FBI.
