This a simple question of how many people you had watch Firefly and they became fans as well?

I have at least 10 to my credit.

EMBERS

Over the last year I've made a point of giving everyone 'Firefly' DVDs for
Christmas
birthdays
anniversary
house warming gift
etc etc etc
I know for sure that at least 15 people have become big fans and have watched their DVDs multiple times and will not miss the movie,
a lot of others never got back to me,
I don't even know if they've watched them...
yet

there is still time ... "bwa ha ha ah" (diabolical laugh)

Only one. She was a toughie. If she lived closer than 2000 miles away, it would have been an easier sell. Ever since I got into it, I was trying to get her into it. She's a total Joss fangirl otherwise, but she wouldn't try the show on her own. I sent her CDs of the episodes that I burned myself, but she wouldn't watch them. Finally I ended up sending her the actual DVD set and practically had to swear that I'd never speak to her again if she didn't watch them. Once she finally got to them, she watched them while we were on IM together. At first she narrated as she watched "Oh, I guess this is a war...", "Oh, now here's the spaceship...". But as the pilot ep went on, the messages were getting slower and slower. Every 20 minutes I'd get an "Oh my god", "Wow", "She's not gonna die, right?? Tell me she's not gonna die!!", or "Mal!!!!!", etc. She's totally hooked now and at least once a week she apologizes for not listening to me sooner. ;)

So that's my only story so far. Most of my friends (the actual local ones, that is) think I'm a dork so they never take any fandom advice from me. Though my mom will sit down and watch Firefly if I'm visiting her and just happen (*cough* *cough*) to have the DVDs with me. But the woman doesn't even know how to turn on a DVD player let alone ever have the hankering to watch something specific. She's a total non-fangirl (no favorite TV shows, books, music, anything... sad existence) and I don't know how I ended up like this when I have half of her genes. But I will drag her along to go see "Serenity" on one of the million cinema trips I plan on taking next fall!

Since the show went off the air, I've lost count of exactly how many sci fi fans I've turned into full-on Flans. Before the DVD set, I would loan out my VHS tapes of the show quite frequently. Nowadays I give the set as a gift and/or loan out my second DVD set purchased just for that purpose.

In 2005 alone, I have already converted around ten people including old friends and co-workers. My sister (who received her Firefly box set in x-mas of '03) recently called to inform me she had spent an entire weekend re-watching the series.

When asked the question "Will you see the movie when it comes out in Sept?" every person I've given or loaned a Firefly set to these past few years has answered with an enthusiastic "Yes!" None of these people had heard of Firefly before the DVD set came out.

It would be interesting to ascertain the exact number of Flans there are out there now as compared to how many there were when the show was on the air. I'm certain the increase in the fanbase is a staggering figure.

Is there some way to find out how many Firefly DVD sets have been sold since the set debuted and compare this number to the average Fox Firefly numbers?

mattro

PS: There are several used DVD bins I check on around town here in Seattle. I never see a used Firefly DVD set in any of them.

So far only three, but I'm working on my forth. She is a bit stubborn, so it might take awhile. But I shall NEVER give up!

One easy one, one hard sell.

The hard sell called me the other day to say, "I have only two DVDs and it's your fault." He was already halfway through Vol 2. He knew I'd been a Star Trek fan most of my life, and I think he was fearful of getting bamboozled. But I bagged him...

For me, it's not the quantity, but the quality of the converts that count. Cuz you convert one, then they convert one, then they convert one and so on until before you know it, there's an acre of them back there!

Converting the 'verse... one browncoat at a time.

Are we talking DIRECT converts or converts that can be eventually attributed to you? I think this is an important distinction to make because, as I like to point out to others, Firefly is like a bug (pun intended). You get someone infected with it and they, in turn infect those around them. After a few months, everyone they know has it and are spreading it on to others they know...like geometric progression.

Of course, I am speaking mainly from my own experience (and those I have infected), so this might not be the case everywhere. Either way you count it, my number is pretty darn high.

I think the thing that most surprises me is the vast cross-section of people who love the show. I have spread the addiction to young children and senior citizens...as well as every age group in between. In this manner, Firefly is almost like cigarettes or cocaine...only without the blatantly harmful side-effects.

My appologies to CHANNAIN for repeating the very points she made in the previous post to my own. Serves me right for not reading through everyone's responces.

Hey, no worries

I forgot to mention the easy sell was just WAY too easy. She's a horse person, so got the western factor right there. And she LOVE's sci fi - we used to watch classic BSG together when we were kids. I only had my bootleg DVDs at the time, so Jaynestown was episode 4 then. By the time we got to the ballad, she was on the hook. When the ballad started though? Man - hook line and SINKER!!

My next victim? My brother, Jay. He'd get along with Mal and Jayne - he's multi-layered that way.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Hard to say anymore. I know of at least 20 right off hand, but I have handed out hundreds of fliers, talked to more people in video and book stores than I can even remember, and poster fliers in all manner of places.

I dunno about directly, that'd be around a dozen, but thing is...

I co-opted some of the local upper management for Barnes and Noble, thus resulting in the DVD being on the suggested Xmas present list, and given the level of promotion such a great series deserves.

I guess you'd call that going straight for the throat, heh heh heh...

How many off that, we'll never know.

One cool lady who looks a bit like Liz Frazer of the Cocteau Twins, and indeed styles herself after her. She's the walking definition of cool, and yet loves the art of storytelling so much that we both can't shut up about Neil Gaiman, and now we can't shut up about Firefly either!

One chap who looks a little like the actor Andy Serkis, who teaches latin at a posh school.

This chap in the only funky comic shop that is completely unlike Comic Book guy's comic shop out of the Simpsons. (Comicville in Leeds)

That makes three then. Hmm. Thought it was more. Must try harder.

I've got 3 who say they'll go to the movie, but couldn't get any to buy the dvds!!
My friends all have chronoton particles stuck up thier butts! If it doesn't have it's origins in 60's Trek, or 70's Galactica, they won't try it!!
Anybody else out there finding it a tough sell to those trapped in a time- warp?

Gorram frustratin' it is.
