Hello Browncoats.

Just got back from I-CON. It was great. FINALLY I got a chance to meet a BDH and had a Big Damn Time.

Jewel was exactly as I thought she would be, friendly, interesting, funny, and entertaining. She told some funny stories, including the story of her and Nathan giving each other the finger, starting from him doing it to her on set to her getting the entire Dragon-Con audience to give it back to him.

While on line for her autograph I talked a bit with her husband Matt. He seems like a great guy, which is what I've read from other Browncoats that have meet him an other Cons.

I also talked with Keith R.A. DeCandido, the writer of the novel for Serenity. What can I say, another nice guy.

If anyone was there and recorded her Q&A and can upload it, please contact Haken to host it. I know everyone that couldn't go will enjoy seeing it.

Hopefully the other BDHs will do cons in the NYC area.

Later

Hee hee. I was there for that one. What a hi-larious stunt. She didn't mention if Nathan's tried any retribution on her for that yet, did she? That's a tough one ot follow up, but if anyone can pull it off, Nathan can. I'd love to be there when he tries.

She said that he hasn't but he's probably coming up with something to top it, but it will be pretty hard.

Oh, I'm betting it involves a red carpet, dozens of teevee cameras, and Joan and Melissa Rivers...

...and the FCC will probably also get involved...

I already posted this on the OB, but I know everyone uses different boards, so here is my report on I-Con.

Well, this was my first convention ever, except of course, for the corporate types, which don't count. What can I say.....I had a very shiney time! It was great to see friends from the PA Shindig, Cephme, MOH, as well as all my fellow NYC Meet-up Browncoats who worked the table, Tzegha, Pol1, Clandestiny, and Whedonesque, the last two who road up with me to Stony Brook.

First of all, let's give a great big thanks to Pol1 (Polly) for organizing our fan table. I know you put so much time and energy into this project and I must say I was very proud to work at our table, it looked great! I'd also like to thank all those who didn't go, but sent in fan videos, posters, and all the other give-aways. It really helped draw people to our table. Also, a big thanks to Cephme who brought me a copy of “Finding Serenity” so I could have it signed by Keith and Jewel.

And speaking of Keith, thanks Keith for joining us at the table and playing host at the Shindig. You are too funny....are you sure you didn't miss your true calling as a stand up comedian?

Okay, first impressions. The first thing I noticed as we drove up to the campus was all the people in costumes. Wow! Some were really professionally done. There were some costumes that were...well...interesting...but I just wasn't sure what look they were going for... The stand out was the short person in a large, yellow, round costume with a head piece that looked very similar to a large chunk of cheddar cheese that had begun to mold. I was a bit confused why anyone would want to spend their day looking like a piece of moldy cheddar cheese, but hey, maybe it was just to amuse people like me!

Speaking of costumes, Tzegha, dressed as Kaylee, and Ray, dressed as Captain Tightpants, and they were just too cute. Next year I think we should prop the two of you up in a corner with a sign above your head that reads, “Yes, we are cute and of course, you can take a picture of us!” How many photos were taken of the two of you anyway?

And Ray, the look of joy on your face when you showed us your latest purchase of white, fuzzy, bedroom slippers with bunny rabbits on the toes! Now these were not just ordinary bunny slippers, these were evil bunny slippers that when you opened their mouths they had fangs. Ray, of course, proceeded to attack everyone in sight with his new fuzzy bunny slippers.

Well, I must have passed out more than a dozen, fliers about our NYC Meet-up Group. We’d love to have more people join our group so if you are a lurker, please join us!

Okay, favorite stories from the wrongly advertised “Firelfy Fan Forum (supposed to be Shindig)”... Thanks to Whedonesque who said “let’s go up and get a picture” we were the first to find ourselves at the back of the room with Keith and Jewel during the “Firefly Fan Forum should have been a Firefly Shindig.” Others saw Jewel and started to follow. In order to make room for others to see them I kind of moved to the back of the room which placed me between both Jewel and Keith. They obviously knew each other (I think????) and I enjoyed just listening to each of them tell stories.

Jewel is very funny and had lots of great stories to tell at the Q&A about the running joke between her and Nathan and giving each other the finger. One of the stories that I hadn’t heard before was when Nathan told Jewel that he had a present for her and presented her with a small box with a ribbon on it. When she opened it Nathan’s finger came out of the box (he had cut a whole in the bottom of the box!) Another prank that Jewel played on Nathan was when she sent a card to him pretending to be an obsessed fan. On the card she wrote how much she loved him and couldn’t live without him and if she couldn’t have him no one could. She then dropped the letter in his mail box so Nathan would know that this fan knew where he lived. Well, when he opened the card, he of course, read the note, and then opened the third fold of the card, which produced a picture of Jewel giving him the finger!

Has anyone talked about the number of Browncoats that were at I-Con? Based on the Shindig (I tried to count) and Jewel's Q&A, I would say there were 120ish? Anyone else actually count?

Had a great time! Thanks to everyone who attended! And Jewel, if you are lurking, thanks for making this such a great event for Browncoats!

I was at Icon I also have video of the event. I'm still pieceing it to gether and compressing it its over 10gbs of information. I'll gladly upload it Please contact me at Jkpcwiz@optonline.net I'm going to be busy editing and compressing it.

Now as far as Jewel S. goes, I have to tell you guys I went to the interview of Peter mayhew (chewbacca) he was 30 minutes late and after working 30 minutes he walked out. When a 7 year old asked for a picture he shouted to her mother to her up.
In contrast Jewel was far diffrent her forum was supposed to be an hour and her and her husband hung out for over 1 hour and 45 minutes. The guy with the mic actually had to break it up. She still hung around talking to people and taking photos. Her husband was a great guy too my GF said when she got our photo that he was joking around and making everyone on the line laugh including Jewel. I gotta tell you if you get a chance to meet her at a signing go for it. I've done 4 years of Cons and i can tell you she was the nicest celeb I've met. People like that go places.

Aim to Misbehave

And here's my "totally high on I-Con" report also posted on the 'Versal Board and the OB...

I-Con was great. Jewel Staite is a complete sweatheart.

Jewel was a real trooper Friday night. She and her husband, Matt, ran into traffic (in New York, what are the odds) and arrived at the con just in time to be ushered to her first panel with Peter David. Even worn out from the trip, she was in a good mood and although Peter ran the show, she tried to throw herself into it. There was a lot of reminiscing about her time spent on Nickolodeon's Space Cases where she worked with Peter David.

Saturday she had a Q&A which had a good turnout and was very entertaining. She is not a lecturer like some of the others guests at cons but pretty much just likes to answer questions. She did tell some funny anticdotes about the cast, especially she and Nathan's rivalry of "saluting" each other. No holds barred for all those costumers out there, although she thought the dress in "Shindig" was pretty, she HATED wearing it after only ten minutes. In the scene where the crew waits for the outcome of Mal's swordfight, she was supposed to have it on the whole time but she begged out of it by saying, "couldn't Badger just have a nice moment and let her go and change?"

After her Q&A, she signed autographs and let people take pictures with her. Matt took the pictures.

Saturday evening the area Browncoats threw a Shindig and Jewel came. Con goers did not know what to expect especially since it was listed as a Fan Forum in the program. There was lots of food, music and fun conversation with Jewel and many fans. I spoke with Jewel and asked if she would meet up with the New England and NY area Browncoats later that evening for drinks. She said she was one of the judges for the masquerade but that it was a dance with a cash bar so why don't we meet up there. It started at ten.

Later that night, we did all meet up. I bought her a drink, she bought me a drink...in fact, there was much drinking, much dancing (Matt is a great dancer, we danced liked crazy-and Jewel and I danced to the B-52's), fantastic conversation (I had a good deal of great one on one time with Jewel) and an all around wonderful time. We closed the dance floor bar at 2am and Jewel, Matt, Keith DeCandido, myself and a handful of other Browncoats went to the hotel bar to continue the party. We closed the hotel bar at 4am and stumbled back to our rooms bleary but happy.

Sunday afternoon Jewel stopped by the fan table to say hi before she had another signing and Q&A. The Q&A opening question was, "So how are you feeling?" I think she fared better than I. She went on to talk a little bit about the movie (no spoilers), action figures, and how she enjoyed hanging out at the con with people. Most of the questions were reminiscent, as one Browncoat remarked, of Inside the Actors Studio. She has two tattoos; One on her hip of moon and stars that her father bought for her on her fifteenth birthday, the other of a unicorn on her lower back that her mom bought for her on her eighteenth birthday...it was established by Jewel herself that she indeed has "cool" parents. At the end of the Q&A we hugged and said our goodbyes.

Jewel and Matt are lovely people, a great team and a whole hell of a lot of fun! I truly hope I get to hang out with them again someday.

Oooooh...THAT explains it. I was in the ladies' room and this very, VERY, VERY angry woman was talking about what an ass Mayhew was. Sounds like she wasn't wrong.

Anyway, if you contributed a vid, I wound up discussing it on a different thread than the reports thread (sorry):

SHINEY

Hee hee, hey people! Aronacus told me he'd finally joined. I know basically I've been a lurker since I joined but ICON kinda gave me the kick in the pants I needed.

Well I and Aronacus (the other half of my orange) attended all three days. I am sure if ya saw me at any Firefly events you probably looked at me funny. I was all in white, wearing purple batwings on my back, and sporting my Mighty Mighty Moogle Pom Pom of Doom headband with furry ears. If you play Final Fantasy than you know I was a Moogle.

I had a great time. I couldn't believe that the Firefly fans had a table this year. I unfortunately missed the first Q and A session because I was on line waiting for an autograph. But I went to the Fan Forum later on and had me some Virgin Mudder's Milk! Oh and if the lady I spilled some of it on is on this forum. I am so so sorry! BTW, where's the recipe for that Virgin Mudder's Milk ?

Aronacus is almost done putting together the video of the second Q and A session. Aronacus was so nervous at asking a question he mistakenly asked if they translated the Japanese on the show. =hugs Aronacus= He's a bigger fan than I am. Jewel Staite rocks!

OK, I think calling it a recipe is a strech, considering that the ingredients were mostly what I happened to find in the random supermarket I stopped by on my way to the con Saturday morning. But what I threw into that pitcher was: 1/2 gallon of chocolate soy milk, 1/4 gallon of Very Vanilla soy milk (which is apparently different from regular vanilla soy milk), and a bottle of Kaluha mudslide mix. Stir and hope for the best....
