Has anyone else looked at the cover for the book Serenity by Joss Whedon that is on sale at Amazon?

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1845760824/ref=pd_sxp_elt_l1/10

Who's the chick / guy on the end?

Hey, Mr. DeCandido...? I know it's not your book but you seem to be the expert . Wanna do the honors?

That person is a lucky person who won a contest to visit the set of "Serenity".
It is a random photo being used as a 'placeholder' until the official cover page photo is chosen and attached to the book.

Instant I saw the title "Um... who is that?", I just knew this was the question being asked.

We need a FAQ.

Not a faq. We need a Big Damn Sign taking up half the front page with a copy of the picture and big flashing .gif-animated block letters saying THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL NOVEL COVER AND/OR POSTER. THE PERSON ON THE RIGHT IS THE WINNER OF A FAN CONTEST. We also need a worm on the server that will track people's keystrokes and pre-emptively fry their CPUs if they type this question again.

And people will still be asking this qustion again within a week.

Mr. Gaeta, start the clock.

Poor Keith. On the Universal board he gets asked this question at least twice a day for the last 4 or 5 months.

I proposed making up fantastical stories about it but, he shot me down.

*laughs*

Yes, that's an extra who won a charity auction to be in a Universal film. The covers you see on Amazon for both Joss's book published by Titan (which I believe is a scriptbook and/or a behind-the-scenes tome) and for my novelization of the film published by Pocket are solicitation covers with placeholder art that is not the final cover. For reasons passing understanding, the photo that Universal supplied to both Titan and Pocket was the one with the extra. Very odd.

Pardon for asking an already answered question.

Mr. Decandido and Knibblet, thank you for answering so patiently and graciously. I don’t check any of the other boards, and unfortunately can’t check this one as often as I like, so thanks for putting up with those of us who are sometimes not entirely in the know. It's nice to see that most people on this board haven't begun assuming the snobbish, cliquish attitude that so turns the average person off from SciFi fandom.

Shame on you Cybersnark and Tlacook.

Blinker- great suggestion.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I agree w/ Blinker & Aeradia that a FAQ section might help to eliminate such questions and keep some of the less neighborly responses to a minimum. Message boards are not the best medium for conveying tone and even if it is not meant us such, a response can be interpreted as snide or snobbish.

Aeradia, I am certain that neither Tlacook or Cybersnark meant their responses to be rude. Sometimes people forget that it is not easy for everyone to sort through dozens of threads and hundreds of responses to get the information they seek. Sometimes if it is not readily apparent it is simply easier to ask.

We really don't mind answering questions so please don't be put off.

They're just joshin' ya, aeradia.

Matter of fact, I wouldn't mind reading some of Tlacook's wackier stories about that photo. Something about Alan's siamese twin sister (they were surgically separated at the age of 19) coming to visit the set for the day.

Cybersnark, if you do master that technology, I want some of the action for my work. hehehe, that'll stop some of the questions I get all day every day.
I have to remind myself, "This might be the 10th time I've heard this question today -- but it's the first time this person has asked me."

I apologise too, I was just, well, living up to my name, come to that. Didn't mean nuthin' by it.

I tend to do that. I think at my most polite I've redirected people to http://www.gullible.com. At other times, I've been known to remind people of some kinda Canadian version of Dennis Leary.

I understand when people are joshin' me. I'm from Texas, so I think we might even have invented the term.

I do however think that we have to be careful of how we react to new fans or to fans who normally lurk or just check in sporadically.

As you said, it's hard to tell tone online, and perhaps my "shame" comment came off with more vitriol than intended. The whole email was intended to gently remind folks of the general neighborly attitude I think most Browncoats wish to convey. Hopefully that’s what came across.

Although, re-reading this email, I come across as a little pompous. Shit, dudes. Sorry.
