When Fox cancelled Brisco, I wanted to blow up their HQ.
When they cancelled DA, I wanted to blow up their HQ with the suits inside!!
After I saw Firefly on dvd for the first time, well, I guess there'a a special, special level of hell...

Fox = bias.

Is it just me, or is there quite a few of us Browncoats that have reached our 40th rung on the ladder of life? I catch these comments, or I look up profiles and we ain't jus' a bunch of little kids here, are we?
We all just think and communicate so young-like is all, huh?

Chrisisall is 45!

Got you beat, I'm 46. I just rented My Bodyguard from Netflix. That was a delightful movie and I highly recommended. That was Adam's first movie, he said that movie changed his life.

I remember loving Firefly the few times I watched it. Wasn't aware of the efforts to keep it alive. Since then, I've had flashes of images from the show--Kaylee's smile, especially-- but couldn't remember where it was from. And then last Christmas, my son gave me the DVD set. I looked at him somewhat quizzically I suspect because that was how I felt. He said,"I thought I remembered that you liked it." When I looked at the cover, it did seem familiar.

I'm terrible about buying DVD's and then not watching them, so Firefly sat unopened for a week or so after Christmas. One day, I just decided enough was enough, and I popped Disc One in the tray, and my life hasn't been the same since.

This is a wonderful site. Sometimes I don't get here for days on end. Other times, I'm online as much as possible following threads (such a diverse, fascinating group of people here!) or reading the superb fan fiction--usually weekends because I'm a middle school teacher and am always exhausted at night. I always watch an episode of Firefly before I go to sleep, often watch several discs a day on vacations, or weekends. I've downloaded the mp3's onto my iPod so I have Firefly as company along my daily 65 miles-one-way commute. I've bought Firefly and Serenity t-shirts and sweatshirts, made up episode-related crossword puzzles for my own amusement, dabbled in writing fan fic, went to WonderCon to see Joss, Nathan, Adam, and Summer, recruited family members and...and..it goes on and on.

Anyway, that's my story. By the way, I'm 60.

Look at the pretties!

This is what I think was been overlooked by Fox and so many others. I'm forty years old. I've been coming here since Train Job aired and the one thing that I noticed right away was the different demographic Firefly draws. I'm not saying we're better than other sci-fi fans (why state the obvious? ), but we're definitely not the 13-25 yr-old male demographic that Fox seemed to be targeting.

It might even be fair to blame Joss for this one. Surely he knew he was writing something that would appeal to a more patient audience. Maybe he just figured that viewers are viewers and Fox wouldn't care. But the big difference with drawing an older crowd, IMHO, is that we're a little harder to manipulate with quick flashy advertising. It takes time to draw a crowd when you're talking about the something with the subtle depth of Firefly, and even more when the likely demographic is older.

If Joss had been up-front with Fox about this issue from the beginning, they might have taken a different approach toward launching the show. More likely they'd have lost interest in the project, and I suppose that was the dilemma he was faced with. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

I think you have a very good insight on what the show is about. At the end of the day, we are Browncoats. We are educated, creative, and we tend to speak our mind.

The more I meet Browncoats, the more I love Browncoats. Is it just me?

Do your students know you like this show? It would be highly amusing if you were conversing with one of your own students here and didn't know it!

Also, kudos on your good taste in television.

Interesting question, Malicious. Must confess it never occurred to me that I might have a student who was on this site. My immediate response would be "Not a chance." But I am reminded of several students who are anime freaks, and one in particular who is a Weird Al fan, as am I. So I guess it's possible. In fact, I think it would be too shiny if that were the case. This is a very conservative little school district, and I am not, so I keep to myself about a lot of things. I have mentioned it in class in passing, but it piqued no interest that I was aware of, anyway.

Have considered having students write fan fiction, but we are under the thumb of No Child Left Behind because of our poor scores and I have little say in what I teach. Hmmm, maybe in their journals...something to think on. Thanks!
