I finally got to watch Firefly (and own the DVDs) as of this weekend. So I am rather new to the fandom. I'd like to hear the major news but I don't wanna go mucking about the old messages.

Namely I want to know about Serenity...

Will it be the Pilot episode rehashed for film? Does it have the entire original cast? Is the talk true that if it is a success Firefly may be revitalized (under a different name perhaps)? What about the whispers I heard of it being picked up by the Sci Fi Channel to play with BSG on Saturdays?

thanks all

Hi, and welcome.

The movie Serenity will be out Sept 30. It will have the entire original cast. It will occur some time after the last episode (I've heard 6 months after Objects in Space) and is NOT a re-hash. More movies could happen, but a return to TV is doubtful.

I know nothing about the SF channel.

Hope that helps.

Hello and thanks its good to be here

Wow thanks for all the data. *nods* okay that's all wonderful news to hear. I was worried it would be a rehash. Despite the fact it would draw in fans I would love to see new stories. Hmm wonder what happened in those six months. Probably a lot though you never know. Well I kinda figured TV would be doubtful but I'll hope for it anyway. Firefly seems tailor made for good TV. Still I wouldn't mind more movies. Lets see what happens.

as for sci-fi... yeah I kinda figured it was too good to be true (have to admit that's a built in fan base right there) oh well.

thanks again

There have been purely speculative rumblings that since 'Versal owns SciFi, they should rerun Firefly this summer prior to the movie coming out to help build the fan base. Nothing even remotely official has been said, and there has been no hint that it might return to television as a series again after the movie. In fact, Joss shut down Mutant Enemy which is a pretty good sign that he's done with television.

Edited to add-

Welcome! There will be three comics out this summer starting in July that will cover the 6 months between Objects in Space (the last episode on the DVDs) and Serenity. :)

Each of the three comic books will have three different covers available so that all 9 main characters get their own cover.

I agree. I'm excited for the movie(s), comics, games etc. But TV's where it belongs. :(

I would love to see this run in the UK on E4 (even though I don't have digital) or T4 Sunday.
The best way to publicise this film would be through the designs and fashion in it. That sort of cowboy/chinese twist would take off quite well considering in the UK cowboy look/ethnic look is very big for summer. If there was a Serenity autumn collection from someone like Topshop then people would wonder what the film was about.

I can see UK Cosmo picking up a Sean Maher "Hot New Looking Lad" in their September issue if we are lucky. I reckon that if all the ladies write and demand a picture printed of him with no shirt then we could be in luck.

Well Mutant Enemy could be restarted. Thats not a huge problem in itself. Its the sheer inertia of the thing thats the problem.

Huh you know I wonder if this is all politics then. i didnt realize sci fi universal fox and joss were connected (I knew NBC and SciFi were). If they execs were smart I would think they would plae Joss into sicfi give hima ncie pay check and leave him be. But then what do I know I like the remake of battlestar galactica

Stil you never know it could still pop up there... maybe...*crosses fingers*

actually I had some friends who raved about the show while it was on. I didnt get a chance to see it as I could never find out when it was on. When I found out it was on DVD I saved up the money and got it off Amazon. I was glad to find out my investment paid off.

as for Objects in Space and getting dewey eyed... I'll tell you when I finally see it. I have four episodes to go and I am holding off so I can stretch out my pleasure for the longest possible period of time.

oo a welcome wagon *gets out the pie*

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the board Zia. Glad to have you w/ us.

Looks like my compatriots have already filled you in on the major news so I will not repeat it.

Just so you know besides the comics in July there is a novelization of the movie due out in Sept, there is talk of two novels for late this year or sometime next year, and there are action figures to come out around the time of the movie. There will also be a copy of the screenplay and a collectors magazine, both probably due out in the fall.

Hi Zia - More good News! You have four and a half more episodes to go sorta, kinda - one of my favorites never made it from script to screen, but it still makes an excellant read. I'm sure after seeing the other episodes you'll be able to "see" this one too.

Can another Noob join in?
Well, I'm 19, and heard friends rant about it over the summer, but I'm not a big sci-fi fan, so I didn't pay any attention really. But a friend brought the DVDs over about two weeks ago, and thats all that's been on our TV. I was blown away. The Western twist, the characters, the dialogue, and of course, the Beatles reference before the credits of the pilot helped.
I caved and bought them one week ago today. I went through most of them at an alarming rate, but there was always people missing so eps had to be re-shown. I've seen Serenity and The Train Job 3 times already. I was set to watch Objects in Space on saturday, but left it 'till Sunday 'cos I wasn't ready to be finished. :(
Thanks for all the information...

Welcome to the boards! I never saw it when it was on television either because I'm not really into Sci/Fi. I went to my first convention last week to see Jewel and over half the people at the Shindig were people who got into it after it was off the air.

Eep, the Beatles reference was when they released the 'Cry Baby' to distract the alliance. "Cry baby cry, make your mother sigh," are lyrics from a Beatles song, called, funnily enough, Cry Baby Cry. Ringo sings it but John wrote it for his son. It's on White Album disc 2.
I guess the though that the Beatles had survived 500 years had me all happy... But it was more than that that got me hooked. Besides, I watched Train Job first, and that's when I fell in love.

Erm, I have a question that I think somebody here must know...Don't know if it's on another thread or anything but its really bugging me. What's the deal with Mal's tattoo? Is it Mal's tattoo or Nathan's? I've tried the zoom button on my dvd player, but I can't see. And I look pervy 'cos you can only see it when he's naked in Trash.

The tattoo is Nathan's, Duchess (oh, by the way, welcome ). He told one convention crowd that it translated to "Property of Gina Torres" but I'm pretty sure that was a joke. The most definitive answer I've seen so far is from a recently released interview over on Ain't It Cool News (they had been sitting on it until the release of the trailer). Here's the relevent portion (but check out the entire interview. It's Adam and Nathan and it's great):
Quote:

excerpted from http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=20034
...
Holly: There was a question someone had asked me to ask . . . when you’re naked on the rock, is that a tattoo or a birthmark?

Nathan: It’s a tattoo.

Holly: And what is it a tattoo of? You want to tell people? If not, it’s cool . . .

Nathan: It’s something I did when I was nineteen, and I regret. I mean, I’d rather be clean. I don’t want my grandkids looking at me going, “What’s that?!” Well, it’s a just a . . . eh, it’s nothing.

Adam: What is it?

Nathan: It’s a (holly’s note: I’m not telling’ ) …

Adam: So it has no sentimental value anymore?

Nathan: No, I’m big on Egypt. I’m big on Egyptian culture and how they were so incredibly advanced and amazing, and we know nothing about them. Just gone and erased. They were so advanced, and yet disappeared. Know what I mean?

Holly: Like the Mayans . . .

Nathan: Exactly. That kind of stuff has always interested me. Enough to go to Egypt? No. Enough to tattoo it on my ass? Yes.
