I was watching Serenity again (it is U-day after all :P ) and I got to wondering. Simon, River, and Book initially started out as paying passengers on board, but now that they're part of the crew, do they still have to pay? Just a thought...

EMBERS

I'm guessing that Simon's work on board (which is hard work considering how often these folks get wounded) pays for him & River...
plus he master-mind a big take at Ariel.

But I think Book and Inara are still paying passengers.

I like to think that Simon and Book could even be revenue generators. Simon could do the traveling physician schtick and Book could perform weddings, baptisms, services and such. Granted, they'd likely get paid in canned goods or maybe chickens, but that kind of thing can be good for the crew or re-sold someplace else.

Right! Good lord, how could I forget that? I wonder if anyone's written a fan fic where Simon's payment turns out to be a pretty boy who's to cleave to him, but ends up attracted Jayne?

And if that doesn't skew this thread in a really wrong direction...

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I've pretty much forgotten DorA -- haveta go reread it -- but Book came aboard with "a little cash", some herbs & spices, tomatoes, and a strawberry. I reckoned his status must have changed by the time they got to Bathgate Abbey.

Um... what is dead or alive? An unused Firefly script or something? It appears to be written by the person who wrote war stories.....

Anyone clue me in on this?

It's an Unused Script.

The show was canceled before shooting.

Something that crossed my mind with regards to the good Shepherd (and, I suppose, the Doctor)... when they come aboard they're paying customers - that changes quickly with Simon, for obvious reasons.

But I'll bet dollars to donuts that Book has switched over to 'working passage', offering an extra set of experienced hands around the ship.

After all, he's gambling shipboard duties during the Tall Card game - how often do paying passengers have to do septic duty, garbage or the like? (Dishes I can see, but only just...)

No, "Dead or Alive" was the only one.

I agree. If he were just a paying passenger, I don't think his bossy-ness would be tolerated (ie; telling Mal he won't be party to murder, warning Mal about the Special Hell, practically forcing Mal to give the Reaver victims a decent farewell, etc).

Mal-licious

I think I will add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.
