Howdy all. I have a question regarding a friend who wants to borrow my DVDs. He's very interested in the trailer, and now wants to watch the series. However, I know this guy, and he's a downloading, pirate-y kind of fool. I know that, more than likely, he's going to make copies of the whole set, rather than buy it. What to do?

Everyone dies alone.

I would suggest lending only the first (or, at most, first and second) DVD. Then tell him he can buy his own copy. It's the old 'drug pusher' tactic .

I lent the first five buffy seasons to a "friend" who returned them to me completely ruined and trashed, so I made him rebuy all five seasons ($300+) for me. Taught me a lesson, never lend DVD sets...

If you know anyone that can help my screenwriting career, please help! And yes, I am self-advertising here. Hehehe, me such a little devil.

personally I don't lend my Firefly DVDs,
if it is a close friend then I buy the set for them as a nice big gift for them,
(covering birthday, christmas, wedding...)
BUT if they aren't a close enough friend for a $35 gift?
Then they can rent them from netflix
(netflix even has a free two week trial offer)

I lend out my CSI without qualms, same with the X-files, but Firefly must remain in my house, you never know when you just have to see these characters.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Our thought processes are similar, but I came to a different conclusion. I've bought four sets of Firefly as gifts, but I also loan mine to other friends. If they love it, they can keep it, & I order another set for myself.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . . (wutzon) Gov't Mule, "Thorazine Shuffle", from "Live...With a Little Help From Our Friends"

That's my policy. I have a loaner set (actually two sorta complete sets) and a home copy. Plus I give it away at christmas.

This particular month, I can't afford to, but I was buying a copy of the set if i saw it in a store, just to encourage them to carry it.

I'm fortunate enough to have the means to have a loaner set, too. I figured if someone liked them so much they wanted to keep them, that would be okay with me.

So far, I've been lucky in that most of my loanees have either just said, "That was interesting. Too bad it got cancelled." Others liked it enough to ask me where they could buy their own copy. :-)

If you're friend is a big downloader, he'll find it... Sorry but I've already seen it out there...

"Appears they've canceled the show and we're still here. What does that make us?"
"Big damn junkies, Sir!"
"Ain't we just."
