Looks like things are a bit on the brown side there on land. The oceans haven't risen all that much, from what I can see.

Earth that was is mentioned for about 10 seconds at the start of the movie. I think the screenshot you've picked is from that bit.

Could be the part of the movie where the history of Firefly (or should I say Serenity?) is explained. The ships could be leaving Earth to escape whatever happens to it.

And trailers rarely follow the order of the movie.

after the universal-logo disapears, you can see a litte flash at the west-coast:

maybe this is where the ships startet...

i guess this could be the beginning of the movie, with the explaination, what happend to the earth that was...

That's not the west coast, that's the south coast.

And judging by the size of that flash, methinks Houston has Problems of its own.

Read that post by WhoIsRiver again real slow, Hardy. You may notice that WIR isn't talking about the trailer, but the movie. Think harder next time you contradict someone.

Being born and raised in Houston and along the Gulf Coast, I'd say the flash (just after the Universal logo rides out) is in the approximate position of New Orleans, Louisiana, the well-known home of our nukular stockpiles.

Probably, an over-zealous Mardi Gras'er pukes on the wrong thing, and there goes the neighborhood...

The funniest part is that "disappointed" icon. Priceless.

The explosion does not eminate from New Orleans. I know. I live there. It seems to be centered somewhere along the Texas-Louisiana state line.
Also, I had a thought:
Could the images we see of "Earth that was" be a retelling/narrative explaining the evacuation of Man from the planet?
Something along the lines of the short exlpanitory narration done by Shepard Book as a precursor to the teases when Firefly was on Network?

"I was gonna watch... VERY exciting."

It'll be Joss's political statement for the movie. "In the year 2040, faced with just a two years supply of oil reserves, Man used it all to go into space in search of more...."

Just a little more direct than the TV show's narrative :-).

[um... j/k guys...]

Well, if you really want to know, highlight this spoiler tag. It's nothing major, but, you know - if you want to be a Serenity movie virgin, don't spoil yourself ;)

Select to view spoiler:

Serenity starts with a voice over from a female after the Universal logo, telling us about the Universal Alliance/Independence war, and from what I recall about "earth that was" being 'all used up'. This is all as the Universal logo is pulling out, and we have some nice CGI etc.

The female voice turns out to be a teacher, who is talking to a class about history. Queue young river (etc).

The retelling of virtually the entire Firefly story is all done within 5 minutes, and is a masterful job of screen writing. Unfortunately, it's also the point where people faff around with popcorn and don't pay attention.

Isn't that the reason we have to sit through thirty minutes of commercials and trailers, so we finish all our popcorn before the movie starts?

Could be that it's Britney Spears's career going up in a puff of smoke. ;)
