Howdy.

I'm trying to put plans together for showing Firefly for an entire week at College of DuPage, as backed by the sci-fi/fantasy club. The idea is basically to introduce a whole bundle of folk to Firefly and Serenity.

Plans and such are all laid out, but I'm wonderin'... how would I get permission to show Firefly in a public setting? We wouldn't be making any money, so it's theoretically O.K.... but we're also not technically using it for educational purposes. Technically.

Well... there's Simon's brief history on Egyptians in Jaynestown... And in Safe, it has some Puritan beliefs, which I learned in English last year...you can talk about how Firefly is one of the only shows that take into the scientific fact that sound doesn't carry through space...

If you search hard enough, I'm sure you'll find more.

Hey, it's educational - I learned the dual meaning of sanguine from Firefly! And, you could talk about how the possibility of a real laser gun like the Lassiter, and the type of fuel they might use for Serenity. Then, there's the parallel between Serenity Valley and the Battle of Gettysburg - you could touch on that.

There's more, but it's fun to let other people (or yourself) find them.

Haha.. okay yeah, I guess there are some educational values of Firefly and perhaps Serenity. But is it enough to be able to show it at school without permission?

P.S. Terribly sorry about the double post.

Like you said, you're not charging any money for it, right? So I'd think that would be all right. If not, couldn't you do it somewhere else (someone's house, maybe)? Or are there too many people?

EDIT: Oh, the double-posting is okay (took me a while to figure out what you were talking about). It helps the pirates and hippies.

There's a lot of educational value about Firefly. Speculation about where humans will be in 500 years is a rich field for discussion.

Then there's ~

• The mix of different cultures ~ the more that cultures interact, the more they cross-pollinate. In the days before telecommunication and ease of travel over long distances, cultures remained isolated without any outside influences. But the longer that humans can travel to any part of the globe, and the type of access that television, and now the Internet provides, cultures are being exposed to each other.

So what happens? Do some aspects stay separate, but together like different foods on the same plate? Or will we toss everything in a big blender and hit "frappe"?

• Goverment in the future ~ What type of government would most like take form when humans inhabit multiple planets?

• Social Caste System ~ At present our democratic society stresses equality. Yet in the Firefly 'Verse it is made quite clear that Companions occupy a high "caste" in society. Also, there is an obvious underclass and even slaves in the future... though not slaves as most Americans may automatically think... because it isn't about race, it's about being poor and not having the power. There were plenty of white folk shown as indentured workers.

• Science ~ In the Firefly 'Verse, humans are terraforming planets the same way we clear a tract of land to make way for a new development today. The science of terraforming, and all it's ramifications, is a fascinating subject.

There's much more to discuss of course. But as you can see, there's PLENTY about Firefly that provides a great springboard for discussion, exploring and learning.

CoD could use some Firefly. I attended there myself.

All the shiny people who posted above me are right, imho. You are using it for educational purposes.

Thank you for sharing the 'verse!

Hey, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do it. I just joined this site; I 'discovered' Firefly about 4 months ago when my uncle told me to watch it. Regretabbly, I bought Serenity first, so I didn't see it in order. But, after I watched that, I went right out and bought the box-set. Now I'm a Browncoat and I've made one of my friends watch all of it, and now he's one too. Anyway, back to that, I go to High School in CT and me and my friend are going to try to get the word out somehow. I guess we could try to start a Browncoat club.... that'd be shiny.

Well, do you really need an 'educational' reason to do a showing free-of-charge? I think most colleges provide for student community activities. Even to obtain a charter for a campus organization isn't that difficult, but probably isn't neccessary. If the college has already okayed a location and time and you're not taking any money for the showings, you should be fine. And here's a raised glass for spreading the love for Firefly!

PAXALEXA

hey GorramZero-
College of Dupage? in the chicago suburbs? I'm in the northwest suburbs, and i'm always in dupage county.
anyway, i think that if you make it an open invitation thing and make it open for discussion as to the issues that arise (ie, ethical differences between characters, historical references, science, etc, basically everything that's come up on this post) then you can probably have no problem with reserving a space with the college for showing it, as long as there's space available.

good luck with showing it too. I think it's awesome to have somebody nearby who is really actively trying to get people interested in Firefly. the more people who become interested in the series....

We got my college (SUNY Oswego) to play Serenity during ARCON (Our gaming club's annual yearly convention). Does your college allow club/organization events? That way you could just run it as an open event for your club. Not sure what your school's policy on stuff like this is. Good luck.

I didn't know you needed a reason... You should check with the Admin if it's a possibility.

Good idea for expandin' the 'verse.

I know I'm planning on throwing a Firefly party, but it'll be at house. Who's, I don't know yet.

It'd be pretty shiny if you could rent a theatre and do it. I know my french class was thinking about doing something of the like.

Good luck!

Hey! My name is Jake, and I'm from the Scifi Club meeting today. Amazing how you can run into people by typing the name of your college plus the words "Scifi Club"...

I'll be there for sure.

Howdy, Jake! Glad to see ya here, and even more glad to hear you're on board. Welcome.

Now, to everyone.. went to the inaugural meeting of the Sci-Fi club at COD, and discussed, pandered, yada yada. Came to these points:

We can find adequate space at the school to watch Firefly and Serenity throughout the week. Which leaves only the problem of being able to actually show it. Plans are as follows:

Plan A: I get the rights/permission from FOX/Universal to show Firefly and Serenity, present that to Student Activities, and I'm free to advertise and be squared away. Not sure how to get said rights, but that's the plan.

Plan B: In the event I can't get the rights or such and such, I can't really advertise all that much.. I think.. and I have to say I'm doing it alone. Might not be able to get classroom space, either, since that would show support from the SF club.

...thoughts?

College of DuPage, as in Addison, Illinois?

Sorry, back on topic, if you aren't making money off it, there should be no problem. When I was in college, we had an anime club and had viewings all the time, never once had to ask permission or pay any fees. Now if you start charging, even for concessions, I think there will be a problem.

speaking for a background in guerrilla film, i'd say do what you want. nobody of consequence will know that you're doing it and if they find out, by the time the people that matter cough up a cease and desist, you'll probably be done.

It can get you in a lot of trouble if someone finds out. I would talk to the administration. I know that our Rec club for my college bought an umbrella license that made it possible to show movies from a lot of different companies.

I'm showing two episodes to my third form (13-14 y.o.) this week to highlight the difference between movies and tv shows as part of their media studies. We did a Tim Allen movie earlier and I want to show continuing storyline versus single "story arc" (phrase copyright Joss Whedon).

So,GorramZero, has anything been finalized for the College of DuPage. I work in the area and I was hoping you would put out a schedule and/or location for showings. I would love to see Firefly on the big screen- or a type of big screen, rather.
Let us know how it is going.
Thanks!!

Hey people! Show yourselves!

When I make topics about "browncoats from the chicagoland area," and none of you are there to respond, it's annoying.

Were you guys at the Chicago SN/EN showing in June?

Have you joined the Chicagoland Browncoats? www.chicagolandbrowncoats.com

Gee whiz! So sorry, there dog.
I must have missed the Chicagoland member threads here- bad timing I suppose- because I would have definitely joined in.

Yes, I brought my sister to the SN/EN showing in June. She had never seen it so it was really fun to show it to her for the first time on the big screen.

And, yes, I have signed up on the Chicagoland Browncoat board, but I just haven't really spent much time there. I usually go there looking for a Chicagoland shinding, but the last time I went I didn't find much going on. But maybe I just wasn't navigating it well.
