11THHOUR

Just a heads-up to say that nearly all of my Firefly/Serenity websites will be deactivated soon, including the guerilla marketing poster website. My host for these sites, AT&T, is going through an overhaul and eliminating the support for the personal web pages connected with their Worldnet service.

Taking down the sites is not my choice, that's for sure! These Firefly sites have been in place for years and I'd be happy to keep on going, but the plug is being pulled by the Alliance, err… AT&T. The websites will be officially deactivated as of March 31, but I may have to do the changeover before that to make sure I don't lose important data. I'll wait as long as I can though as I hate to say good-bye to these sites.

Over the years many other Firefly/Serenity websites have posted links to my websites and images, so unfortunately those links will become dead. I know the website links won't work, but the individual image links still might. I haven't yet been able to get an answer from AT&T, no specific answers on their "Help" website section and calling only takes me through menu hell and intolerable wait times. I guess I'll find out…

The good news is that I will find a way to recreate the sites as best I can. There's a lot of history in them and the guerilla marketing site and posters still serves a good purpose in helping to spread the word of Firefly and Serenity. I don't know yet if AT&T will host web pages under it's new configuration, but if not then I'll start a new site and see if I can combine all the previous FF/S sites into one.

For reference, here are the websites that are soon to disappear:

11th Hour Guerilla Poster Art for Firefly:
http://the11thhour.home.att.net

Firefly Art Gallery:
http://blackonblack.home.att.net

Serenity and Firefly Alt Cover Designs:

L.A. Shindig Confidential:
http://sanguine1.home.att.net/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html

Firefly at the Con:
http://tombcat.home.att.net/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html

These websites contain files that can be downloaded for free, like the guerilla marketing posters, web banners, alternate Serenity DVD cover, and Firefly Life Lessons poster. When I set up the new website I'll make these files available again, but I'm crazy busy with work right now so I'm not sure how long that might take. If there's anything you want then please access them soon.

In the meantime I'll post updates for anyone interested and let y'all know where I've landed. I'll probably also post a notice on my regular 11th Hour art website, which is not disappearing because it isn't connected to the AT&T worldnet accounts. Here's the address:

http://www.11thhourart.com

I'll miss the old sites, they've seen a lot of history. They were configured with a bare bones website builder and kinda primitive, but that was their charm. I always looked upon them as the sites cobbled together by those who live on the Rim and have to make the best of what little they had… rough and rebel websites! Ah well, I'll make sure the new ones don't look too polished and all Alliance-like. ;-)

Well, just wanted to let y'all know. But I ain't lettin' this stop my signal! Where there's a will, there's an alternate ISP…

Yer Art Companion,

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Sad to see 'em go 11th Hour. They've been a part of the Browncoat community for so long, used by so many to spread the word, seems like saying goodbye to a friend to hear they're going to be gone soon.

This really sucks, 11th. I saw you and some of the other guerilla marketing geniuses on the "Done The Impossible" dvd. You guys inspired me to do everything I could to get the word out. I wouldn't have moved off the couch if not for you guys, and I'm sure the thirty or forty people I've recruited would like to thank you too.

Remember though it's just the original website that is disappearing, not the content or the continuing faithfulness to supporting Firefly and Serenity. As soon as I can set up shop on a new site all of the posters, flyers, banners, photos and guerilla marketing ideas will be available again.

I'll miss the old site, and I'm concerned about all the "dead links" that will result from all the websites being yanked. New folk who try to find things may discover a lot of dead links and the impression could be that the guerilla marketing efforts have lapsed. Ah well, my hope that once a new site is established then it can climb high enough on web searches to be there for folks who want to help keep spreading the word.

This is one of those rough patches that tend to happen, but we keep flyin'!

Wow, it means so much to know that our efforts inspired you and then you went on to spread the word to others! There's a lot to be said for the effect that each of us as an individual can have in supporting Firefly/Serenity. The heart of guerilla marketing is that you don't have to have a huge budget to make a difference. People telling people, who then tell more people, and all of them tell more, increases awareness exponentially! I think a great deal of the force behind the continuing strong sales of the Firefly DVD is word of mouth... I mean what else could it be? There aren't any big official advertising campaigns going on to bolster the sales... there's mainly us, the ones who know about Firefly, love it, and tell others.

Thank you so much for your message. I never get tired of hearing about how folks get turned on to Firefly and then spread the word to them as needs it told, so to speak.

When I've established a new site I'll definitely be posting about it. If I weren't so crazy busy with deadlines right now I'd really love to be setting up a new site... until then, stay tuned... and enjoy the ol' websites while they are there... download some mini flyers if you're in mood too!

Thanks again,

11th Hour

A conspiracy?! PN, it's not like you to be so suspicious!

Yep, in this case TPTB are bit by bit taking away the wide open Wild West spirit of the Internet. When it started, there were vast open tracks of land and folks were encouraged to set up their sites and populate the landscape with outposts from the sublime to the ridiculous, quirky, informative, naughty, radical, hi-larious, or WTF? Then the Internet became a commodity, big business then went back to doing what it does, get territorial, cut back on services, and bottom line the adventure out of everything.

Another parallel to Firefly, and Mal's distaste of authority's predilection for leveraging its power to makes things a little less cool. Another way was possible, I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have minded paying a little more each month to keep their sites up. Damn Alliance pushing in on regular folk again and wanting to control everything. It's a daunting thought to conjure all of those websites that evaporated into nothingness. "Civilization" comes to the Wild West, history repeats because people are people do the same things over and over again whatever the era.

Well, it's done and it was AT&T's decision. I'll miss the old sites and their history, but I'm still free to set up shop somewhere else... and I will! My work schedule is beginning to open up enough so I can do my own projects and one of them is to launch a new FF/S guerilla marketing website. As soon as it's operational I'll be posting the info.

Thanks for the compliments on my River artwork. I enjoyed doing a kind of change of pace style for our Warrior Ballerina....
