I'm a 67 year old female who has really enjoyed seeing FIREFLY for the first time on the Science Channel this year, 2011. My husband and I had never heard of FIREFLY, and thought we would tune in when it was aired. We couldn't wait for the new season and later learned that what we got was all we were going to get. We were both disappointed. Is there any way the show could be started up, again? (Of course it would have to have the same actors.) We so much want to know how the characters and situations evolve in the mind of Joss Whedon. Hey Joss, how about a BOOK?

First of all, WELCOME!! We're always happy to see new folk- of any age!

I'd say a good %40 percent of the people that come in here are over 40, so you're not alone! I'm not one of 'em, though

I hope that since you know there's no more series that you've seen the movie(Serenity)? Also, we have several graffic novels out under the trade name Dark Horse...Uh....Those Left Behind,Better Days, Float Out, and the latest was Shepard's Tale...They cover a bit of ground, but we'd always like more. I have to say alot of the people here are late to the party too, so you're not alone on that, either...

I've been asking for some real books for a while now too...I think it was one of the first things I came in here askin' for. I'm sure they'll get to that, eventually *sigh* The main thing about being a Browncoat is patience! We're all hanging in there with ya!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Welcome to the 'Verse, Rhiog. Glad you liked the show, and as WishIMay pointed out, you need to check out the movie Serenity which came out three years after the series was cancelled. I'm not sure if the Science Channel ran it, since the series was from FOX and the movie from Universal, so they may only have purchased the repeat rights for the series. Both are available on DVD and Blu-Ray, and they do hold up to repeat viewings, so might as well go ahead and buy them.

Not sure where and how you got the impression that Firefly was considered a "young folks" show. Quite a few of us are a bit up in years, although you are one of the very few I've seen that are older than me. I'll be 61 in a couple of months.

LWAVES

Welcome indeed.

We take all ages, shapes, sizes, nationalities etc. and there appears to be a healthy mix of all of them on here. It doesn't matter as we all join under the common umbrella of Firefly - and to other extents the pre-Firefly and post-Firefly work of Joss and the crew.

As Wish mentioned there is a movie continuation called Serenity which is a definite must watch.
There are comics as well if that format is okay with you.

As for an actual TV/movie continuation then my point of view is that it is highly unlikely as the cast and director have moved on to other projects. But there is always hope. Nothing is impossible, we did get a movie from a cancelled show, but I personally don't see it happening.

If you want to follow/support other work from the crew then take a look around the site or check them out on www.imdb.com
I'd highly recommend Castle as it takes the crime drama and injects it with a heavy dose of fun.

Whatever the case stick around and post when you feel like it. Share you opinions, recommendations or whatever you want. Most folks around here are the decent type which makes it one of, if not the best forum on the internet.

The show has universal appeal.

Most of us here are holding out some kind of hope that we'll see something. A tv series, an animated series, a mini-series, a direct to DVD movie, webcast episodes, a line of books, video games, or even a comic series by Darkhorse. All of these have been talked about in some form or another, sometimes by people who were or are involved in the franchise giving interviews, which usually we then eat up and speculate wildly about. We've only gotten a few appetizers here and there so far, but there always seems to be a little bit of buzz and rumour in the business.

A lot of us are hoping the Avengers does well and Joss gets some renewed interest.

Also, welcome.

( Another one piles on:)

Welcome to the party. Mudder's milk over there, fresh bao and wife soup next to the strawberries.
Always glad to have one more.

We have all felt what you feel, wondered and expressed your hope.

Remember, Star Trek was in syndication for 18 years before the movies became a powerhouse.

Someday, Hollywood will run out of BAD sequels to make, and somebody will do another Firefly.

We're all just holdin' 'till then, taking new followers wherever we can get 'em.

Re: BOOKS

There are some- a couple of Official Guides, a couple of Visual Companions, a couple of books of essays. Sadly, I don't own most of them, and the titles aren't fresh in my head right at the minute, but I'm sure the rest of the Browncoats here can provide, right after they toss me out the airlock for not remembering.

Got no excuse for forgetting, either, as I'm only a youngster of 60.

What Would Mal do ?

my handle should tell you what side of 40 I'm coming from (grin).

I too missed the show when it was in original broadcast and it wasn't until seeing movie trailers and then the actual movie, that I went in search of the older TV series and oh my gosh did I ever get caught in that black hole whirlpool of dispairing fandom where you want more, rewatch what you've got to the point where the family starts to worry about you, and search the web for any firefly morsel like some ravaging zombie.
I did see the show as a younger audience to start with.. Mal being barely old enough to shave, calling the good Doctor a "boy" as if he's lecturing him from 30 years on, etc.. and yet, the environment that was created, edge of world, lost n tossed on the sea, always an underdog yet somehow finding triumph in the smallest of victories, the cast had some week spots , but the general formula held well, and of course the set, a complete ship to function in..rather than they typical open stage or worse, blue screen realm. Sudden humor in the midst of deep drama...it's just all makes for a very satisfying 42 mins (cause I've never had to watch it in broadcast with commercials.)
Do yourself a favor..get Serenity and turn on Joss's commentary.. I've not heard a director so passionate about a product, so appreciative of the smallest of cast's efforts..a look from Kaylee, a camera angle or lighting from crew. You'll fall even deeper in love with the project just listening to Joss's love for it.

Welcome..to the Browncoats.

I for one would love to hear the commentary for Serenity, but for some reason it isn't available on my (UK, Region 2) DVD! Has anyone else had the same trouble?

and the one I'm talking about is on the basic movie edition..not the "special edition" which has commentary by several of the actors..typical fun and enjoyable, but the original commentary by Joss is probably the best I've ever heard from any director on any project. period.

The closest things to Firefly books that have been published are a novelization of the Serenity movie by Keith DeCandido, three companion books (two volumes for Firefly and one for Serenity) that are mainly pictures and scripts, but include some interesting interviews with the actors and with Joss Whedon. There are also two books of thoughtful essays edited by Jane Espenson, one of the writers for Firefly, called Finding Serenity and Serenity Found.

As for books--real books, with more adventures for our intrepid crew--I would dearly love to see such things. After all, haven't there been dozens upon dozens of Star Trek and Star Wars books for fans who couldn't get enough? I imagine the lack of books has a lot to do with the difficulties that resulted in such a gem of a show being cancelled in the first place. I wish someone could see their way to working through the difficulties of copyright ownership and licensing and authorize some books to be written with the Firefly characters, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. In the meantime, my suggestion is that you check out the efforts in the Blue Sun Room at this site, which is where Firefly fans who just can't let go (that includes me) have posted their own versions of the further adventures Mal and the others. The quality and length of the postings there are variable, but there are a number of stories that are novel-length and of extremely high quality.

There's also "Still Flying," which is largely interviews and behind-the-scenes, but does have a few short stories featuring our heroes.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Steven Brust, an established author of quite a few science fiction and fantasy novels, wrote "My Own Kind of Freedom" in anticipation of Joss, FOX and/or Universal creating a tie-in book series. When that did not happen, he released it himself under a creative common license. Consider it "professional" fan fiction.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these are all the Firefly/Serenity books that have been published.

Float Out, Better Days and The Shepherd's Tale were one shots, Those Left Behind was originally in a three issue comic set, each number of which had three variant covers, thus giving us a cover with each main character. I still have those also. Dark Horse also did The Other Half, which was online only, never printed.
