Save Hazel! Fox Dollhouse ARG story grows

Joanna Griekspoor is an alternate-reality gamer and has been playing the new Dollhouse viral marketing game. The goal of the game is to “save Hazel,” a girl trapped in some sort of room that’s tied in to the whole Dollhouse world. Here’s her first post:

Hazel hasn’t been saved just yet!

Various people have got their claws into the viral marketing campaign called Dollplay, and the main goal is to save a young woman named Hazel. Players from around the globe have pulled together in order to solve the mystery. I myself am one of those people and I must say, the story is unfolding quite nicely. For those who aren’t quite up to speed and would still like to get involved, let me tell you where we are.

Hazel started out confused and anxious, much like I was when I first got to the website. We both had no idea of what was going on, or what we were supposed to do. This resulted in a first wave of awkward ‘interviews’, as the correspondence between Hazel and her helpers is called. Hazel called us out and we apologized to her. In this game, it’s very important to establish a good relationship with the person inside the lab (in this stage, that’s Hazel).

Soon after, she let us know that she came to the Los Angeles harbor in search for information on her mother, Andrea. She then got locked inside this room and now has no way out. There’s a strange looking device and a chair in the room with her, as well as bullet holes and blood stains on the wall. Right away she’s very adamant about not getting into that chair and using any device.

It was up to us to convince her, because along with the device she found three wedges that have personality imprints stored on them (just like the ones Topher uses on the show, they look like hard drives). These personalities originally belonged to a Dr. A. Rose, Christopher Brink and Eduard Bertucci. After much debate and Google research, we unanimously decided that Hazel was going to have to imprint herself with her mother’s personality. That was the only way to get more information. By helping her through the manual on how to use EWEN (the chair) and CAMERON (the device), she was imprinted with her mother’s personality.

Here’s where we made a mistake. An imprint will only remain for 24 hours, tops. That meant we had to get our information from Andrea Rose quickly and couldn’t go through the process of calming her down and gaining her trust. So we decided to trick her by having someone pretend to be Topher and getting the info the easy way. This completely backfired and she blew up in our faces. What we didn’t know was that Andrea was fully aware that she was an imprint on her daughter Hazel. She then addressed a video to Hazel giving her instructions to destroy the lab, take a gun out of the safe and run at the first opportunity. Oh, and to use her own (Hazel’s) password on the door to get out.

Little does Andrea know that Hazel does not have a password and will not be able to get out. Which is where we come in again. We’ve put our heads together and have decided to come clean and explain that we are only trying to help her daughter.

Meanwhile, we’ve uncovered a lot of history on Hazel, Andrea, Christopher (Topher) and Bertucci. I believe a lot of us are very invested in the story and curious to find out. We do our research and plotting in between videos from the lab and we’re having a lot of fun doing it!

Stay tuned, I’ll keep you updated.

What good is a "viral marketing" campaign only 4 days before the series premier, that's now MIA, and fans have never heard of? Apparently its never been mentioned on FFF. No videos archived on youtube, hulu nor fox/dollhouse. Is it an extra on the DVDs? Looks intriguing...

Dollhouse Viral marketing campaign

Promotional posters featuring Eliza Dushku as Echo surrounded by blank mannequins were used to advertise Dollhouse by Fox prior the series' premiere.

On February 9, 2009, Fox launched Dollplay, a participation drama centered around Dollhouse. It involved using interactive webisodes and a user forum to drive a viral marketing campaign. The campaign asked users on the Fox Dollhouse website to "Save Hazel!" Hazel was a character trapped inside the Dollhouse in real-time. The campaign was called "Dollplay" according to the official Fox press release and was created by the company P "a radical production outfit from Sweden".[55] Five videos released in a four-hour span showed Hazel entering a room, turning on the light, and messing with a computer. That's when the room locked her in and started to move. She approached the camera and yelled for help just as the transmission cut off.[56]

On February 12, 2009, Fox opened the website up to further exploration, and interaction with the main character was now possible via Webcam. It is not yet clear how the character in the viral marketing campaign related to the TV show Dollhouse, but both dealt with science fiction and mind control.[57]

On February 28, 2009, the Dollplay alternate-reality game ended with players saving the fictional Hazel. After Hazel was saved, she told people that there are "Dollhouses" all over the world that imprint them and change them; these include schools, parents, religion and government. She essentially tells people to think for themselves and then leaves the container she is trapped in and the game ends.

Save Hazel? Saved. Dollplay ARG comes to close

As quickly and as mysteriously as it began, the Fox Dollhouse alternate-reality game known as Dollplay has come to a close. The game asked players to “Save Hazel,” a woman trapped in some sort of container that has connections to the company behind the Dollhouse.

Find out from embedded blogger Joanna Griekspoor how a dedicated group of gamers did just that — and saved Hazel:

The mission to get Hazel out of a container on a ship has come to a close. After three weeks of sleepless nights, puzzles and people turning on each other in the chat room, we saved Hazel.

As the logs showed, there was a fateful night on April 25, 1999. On that night, the two blood stains on the walls occurred and Hazel let us know that the bullet holes indicated two different calibers, and one bullet was fired from a low angle. Many of us theorized on what could have happened here, and eventually it turned out the real events were a combination of our individual speculations.

Hazel’s mother, Dr. Andrea Rose, confessed that project Foxtrot revolved around her own daughter, meaning Hazel was Foxtrot. Project Foxtrot succeeded in transforming little, ‘anti-social’ Hazel into a sweet, young girl by taking out all the ‘bad’ from her personality. The good doctor mommy explained this to Hazel in a video both to her and to us.

In the same video, she let us know that all of Hazel’s ‘bad’ was stored on a wedge. One very genius person in the chatroom then figured out how to permanently combine Hazel’s current personality with the one stored on the wedge, which led to the conclusion of the story.

Once imprinted with the wedge, Hazel remembered everything and her personality noticeably changed. In fact, she is now a secure, strong and determined woman with a bit of a punk rocker appearance. With her personality intact, she explained to us exactly what happened on the night her mother disappeared.

What happened to Hazel Rose?

On that night, there were four people in the room: Hazel, Dr. Rose, a Mr. Bertucci and a ’suit’ from R-Central.

Mr. Bertucci’s daughter, Celia, was dying. He paid R-Central to take his daughter’s personality and imprint it onto Hazel (Foxtrot.) He said he was promised he could take his daughter home (albeit in a new body,) but said that Dr. Rose had not lived up to her end of that deal.

The suit from R-Central then pushed Mr. Bertucci into a chair, and Dr. Rose imprinted him with the wedge containing Hazel’s bad personality. When Mr. Bertucci awoke, he shot Dr. Rose. That caused the suit from R-Central to shoot and kill Mr. Bertucci. He turned the gun on Hazel but didn’t have the heart to shoot a child. Trying to clean up the mess, the man from R-Central removed the bodies of Dr. Rose and Mr. Bertucci right before the a security measure initiated the transfer of the lab.

This concluded Hazel’s quest to find out about her past. We made her a whole person again. She also now remembers the passcode needed to get out of the container, but she doesn’t leave before uploading one last video. The video expalins that the Dollhouse isn’t the only one that imprints people — everyone does it. Schools, parents, religion, governments, they all mold people into something they’re not — obedient little consumers who think they’re changing the world by voting for the least bad choice every four years.

But there is a line and this is where Hazel draws hers: People can be molded, but everyone has a right to their own personality.

Hazel thanks us for our help and warns us about Dollhouses all over the world. Together we have to ensure that they go down. With that, she takes her gun, her money and steps out onto the cold deck of a ship in the middle of Greenland.

We heard you, Hazel. Godspeed. Until we meet again.

DOLLHOUSE MYSTERY

February 16, 2009

Help Solve the Mystery . . .

"Dollplay," an innovative and unique online participation drama invites Whedonites, crime buffs and FOX fans to solve an intriguing mystery now unfolding at fox.com/dollhouse and rprimelab.com.

DOLLHOUSE stars Eliza Dushku as ECHO, a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals ("Actives") who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected, the Actives don't just perform their hired roles, they wholly become - with mind, personality and physiology - whomever the client wants or needs them to be. Whether imprinted to be a lover, an assassin, a corporate negotiator or a best friend, the Actives know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time. After each engagement, Echo returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings, experiences and knowledge are erased. Or are they?

In the groundbreaking new online participation drama "Dollplay," a young woman named Hazel Rose is trapped in a locked mobile laboratory. Her link to the outside world is through the online audience, who are her only hope to escape confinement and help her find out more about her mother, a researcher somehow linked to the Dollhouse. Through Hazel's video blog of real-time captivity, fans are encouraged to post clips, view other fan video responses and offer Hazel advice. In return, Hazel will respond to the audience, challenging them to help her uncover clues and discover secrets about the Dollhouse's early defining days.
Meanwhile, Hazel will use the Dollhouse's imprint machine to dangerously mind-wipe and download herself with a number of new and different personas to help her piece together her mother's sordid history.

With only three weeks, beginning Friday, February 13, 2009 to solve the mystery and escape from the laboratory, time is running out for Hazel. Visit rprimelab.com or fox.com/dollhouse today to help Hazel before it's too late.

DOLLHOUSE is a 20th Century Fox Television and Mutant Enemy Inc. production and was created by Joss Whedon. Whedon also directed the premiere episode and serves as executive producer and writer. Liz Craft and Sarah Fain are co-executive producers.

Behind "Dollplay" is The company P, a radical production outfit from Sweden that coined the term "participation drama." They won an Emmy Award in 2008 for Outstanding Interactive TV Service.

Dr Julie Skinner PhD was raised in her daddy's Skinner Box

Skinner Box: Operant Conditioning Chamber

Quote:

DID SKINNER RAISE HIS OWN CHILD IN A SKINNER BOX?

This famous urban legend was perpetuated by a photo that appeared in Life magazine of behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner's two-year old daughter standing up in a glass-fronted box. The box was, in fact, a climate-controlled, baby-sized room that Skinner built, called the "aircrib." The aircrib was made of sound-absorbing wood, had a humidifier, an air filter, and was temperature-controlled by a thermostat. Dissatisfied with traditional cribs, Skinner built the box to keep his new daughter warm, safe, and quiet without having to wrap her in clothes and blankets. Skinner was quoted in New Yorker magazine as saying his daughter "…spent most of the next two years and several months there, naked and happy." Deborah was so happy in the box, Skinner reported, that she rarely cried or got sick and showed no signs of agoraphobia when removed from the aircrib or claustrophobia when placed inside. The box-like structure and people's misunderstandings about behavioral psychology contributed to the misconception that Skinner was experimenting on his daughter and also probably prevented the crib from becoming a commercial success. People got the impression that Skinner was raising his child in a box similar to the kind he used to study animal behavior—with levers for releasing food.

It's not an "urban legend" when it's true.
