Can Joss think of anything but sex?

You should ask him next comic con, though I'm pretty sure the answer he'll give you is a definitive "no."

Then the crowd will laugh wildly, and he'll go into a more neutral, indepth explanation about character interactions and plot lines, in which people end up dead, summed up at the end as "in other words, still no." Then he will compare himself to that one cheerleader in the backseat of the car in every horror movie.

And there you have it.

Ohkay. That answers it then.

Joss is a guy. I *reach* him on that level. Prisoners of our hormones & upbringing.
No get out of jail-free card.

Personally, I've always thought that it was less that Joss is a guy and more that Joss is an atheist.

In my experience, there is a correlation between atheism and the a focus on (in some cases almost a deification of) sex. Not surprising: if there's no afterlife, why not really, really, really focus on one of the most fun parts of this one? :)

Well, he did mention porn as part of his daily writing routine at his comic con panel.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

ah, but sex always sells! who doesn't want some hot girls put into tight clothes for our viewing pleasure?

plus it makes for interesting undertones in an interesting storyline

Since the whole god thing is a myth, enlightened individuals who are sexually active *would* tend to place a fascination with sex as a high priority, just like other animals.
I know I do.
James Bond as well.

Unless I'm an exception, I must declare you incorrect from personal experience. What are are describing is not atheism. It's nihilistic hedonism.

Sex or promiscuity really is not a tenet of any form of atheism you might look up, therefore it is disassociated from the concept of atheism. Perhaps some atheists choose also to practice nihilistic hedonism, I wouldn't know, but I'm relatively also sure that Joss Whedon is an existentialistic atheist, and not a nihilistic hedonist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Existentialism

Quote:

The early 19th century philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, posthumously regarded as the father of existentialism,[5][6] maintained that the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely,[7][8] in spite of many existential obstacles and distractions including despair, angst, absurdity, alienation, and boredom.

So this is where, and why, Joss' interest in sex comes into play with his life philosophy. Not the atheism.

I think you're mis-reading what I'm saying. I never said it was a tenet of atheism, just that (in my experience, knowing quite a few atheists) there seems to be a correlation.

I live in Utah, so there are very few other atheists for me to talk to. But there is a very broad range of representation within atheism, and I think it's fallacious to generalize an entire group. Not unless you can show that lots of sex really is something that a vast majority of atheists support or obsess about.

I suspect, for reasons of culture, upbringing, simplicity etc. that despite the absence of a moral code based on religion that atheists tend to be both monogamous and that the amount of sex they have is limited by the constrains of their relationships, as it is for most other philosophical groups.

One place where you MIGHT have a point is that an atheist will have no hang-ups about premarital sex, but being this has become the status quo for the general population including many of the younger generation who were raised religious, you can't really argue there's a difference between atheists and the general population.

Artists like Joss Whedon also tend to include depictions of sex in their works in order to be more edgy, and this has been the case since the time of the renaissance, and is not necessarily an indication of actual obsession with sex (though Joss is part of a geek culture wherein sex is treated as a rare and valuable commodity).

In any case, I think there is no reason to suppose that there is increased interest, focus on, or deification of sex in the atheist philosophy. We don't see this represented in population behaviour or dynamics, and we have no evidence that interest for atheists is beyond the pail of the general population.

There is, however (and possibly lamentably) an increased interest about sex in the general population. This I attribute more towards the increasing slide towards hedonism and consumerism in our society than I do increased secularism and atheism. And I think this is more of a coping mechanism for how stressful the world has become.
