Ok I've watched the first episode numerous times and it seems the patch Mal rips off the dead officer's shoulder is on the right shoulder with the point down and the patch Mal himself is wearing is also on the right shoulder but seems to be point up. Could this have just been an error on the part of the wardrobe design or does the placement of the patch denote rank? I've scanned the site awhile and found little info on the patch and I've been wondering this awhile as I recently bought a patch and was wondering how it could be MOST properly applied. If anyone knows anything or has nice quality stills of the patches please post. Thanks.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

This has been a subject of much debate. And not only are there two ways shown of applying it, but there are a few different patches as well.
When the patches are laid out in the Official Companion, they are shown pointing down. Me, I like it pointing down, just for the way it looks. Others, they like it pointing up. I think whichever way looks best where you want to put it is the way to go.

Thanks. I'm still trying to decide which way I like it best. You mentioned other versions of the patch? The only one I've found is the one from Browncoat 107. If you have links I'd be interested in them.

There's only the one version of the patch available for sale right now, I imagine because folk had to just figure it out from screen shots and didn't get to see the little nuances of the patch. Now that the Official Companion is out and has clear shots of the patches there might be some people who will try to make them. It's not a huge deal; just some different shading and such. Pick up a copy if you haven't already, or at least go flip through it; it's all full of tasty costume and script details.

Going into the "big" city tomorrow so I'll have to check B&N or Waldenbooks for it. I knew it was out just haven't had a chance to get it. I just bought a military style messenger bag and I'm putting firefly related patches on it. I'd really like to just do the three patches from Wash's flightsuit from Serenity but the only one I've seen for sale right now except the originals on the suits themselves is the one on the affore mentioned site, which is great quality but has a couple errors that I notice. If I get the book I might just try to make the patches myself if they are in there.
