Likes to mess with stuffs.

Kevin Smith is one of those directors that you either love him or hate him regardless of the types of movie he makes. Not exactly sure what to make of 'Red State,' but it's creepy for sure.

I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith. I even think Jersey Girl is okay but Cop Out looks really bad so I haven't got around to watching it.
This looks completely different to his others movies and very interesting. Looks much more serious and darker in tone. Maybe it's what he needs as a director to show that he can do other things besides comedy.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

So you're the other person that watched and liked Jersey Girl! Glad to meet ya!

I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, but Cop Out was literally a steaming pile of crap. Avoid it at all cost.

Red State does look to be interesting, it has potential. I'll wait for the BluRay, though.

Yeah that's me. I'm the other one. I felt it was a nice change of pace and tone for him (which I think put a lot of his fans off) but it was at least on a par with most of the other romcoms out there and it had a good amount of heart to it.

Your comment on Cop Out has told me that I probably never will watch it. I had pretty much decided that anyway, I just needed that final step.

What's your fave Smith movie?
Mine is Dogma, followed by Clerks (gotta love the one that started it all) but they all have their great moments.

Not so much a fan of his work of late, and he certainly seems to have come unraveled a bit, in his personal life.

I'm also a fan of Jersey Girl. It's a little more formulaic than the more radical, more edgy stuff he used to do. It feels main-stream, like something you'd see as a TV movie or a sitcom, with Kevin Smith language and situations. If it *W*A*S* TV, it would be better, funnier, than average-- for Kevin Smith, it's way tame.

Haven't seen Cop Out, sounded like the mix of Kevin Smith and Bruce Willis came out TOO Bruce.

i also loved me some jersey girl viewage.

have to say my favorite is the one nobody mentions but me, (and @ least according to Afleck, the most "Kevin" of all the films up to and including Jay & Silent Bob Strike back) Chasing Amy..
(yet it and dogma, are the only two i don't have copies of..., hell i even have all 3 "an evening with Kevin Smith"'s)

saw cop out, Liked it, not enough to have paid to see it, but enough to see it again, or buy it once it hits the $5 rack.
You just have to watch it with the following in mind.

a) This is NOT a Kevin Smith Movie.
Yes,he Directed it,but had Nothing to do with the Script. Not even a re-write(if you can believe IMDB)
b) This is simply an homage piece to the 80's "Buddy Cop" genre.

try re-watching it through those filters, and see if it isn't at least a little Better...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Of the Kevin Smith films that I have seen I would rate them this way, from best to worst.

Chasing Amy
Dogma
Clerks
Jersey Girl
Mallrats
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Its not a "Kevin Smith Film" in the same way his other films are, but he Directed it...so he gets the blame.

I did rewatch it when it came out on DVD...still sucks. It just seemed so forced. He is capable of a lot better.

My favorite is Chasing Amy with Clerks and Dogma tied for a close second.

never claimed it was great, or fantastic cinema, or even award (ANY AWARD) Caliber.

just said i liked it. which is a very subjective term.
hell, i liked "Freddy got fingered", but I'm not dense enough to call it a great film...

yes. kevin maybe could have done more. But when the bulk of your directorial career are works that you yourself have written... you just might not want to stomp all over some other screen writer's work, just cuz you see the project going a different way.

and sometimes you just need a paycheck.

Very good points. I can see him not wanting to shit on someone's script since he's always been in their shoes.

I don't know, I might give it another shot down the road just because I am a fan...but probably not.

Another thing that pisses me off is that the DVD release and the BluRay rental didn't have Smith's usual extras...it's only on the BluRay for purchase edition. His commentary is a good percentage of the fun of the DVDs.

hey moose:
Not to beat a dead horse here, but seriously, find a copy of the latest q&a "too fat for 40"
2 hrs. answers ONE question:
What was it like to direct Bruce Willis?
turns that into a 2 hr monolouge.
short version?: You can't. you give him suggestions, the whole movie, and he does what he wants to do.

Don't bother, it's terrible.

He didn't write it, anyway, so it has none of his usual touches. Which leaves the move resting solely on his abilities as a visual filmmaker.... which is his weakest area.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Clerks is his best work.

He's a bit repetitive with his themes, but he's generally fun. Though I found Chasing Amy awkward - at least to me the actors looked awkward with it - but maybe that's just my take.

I think he's a great orator. If you can, have a listen to his story about how he almost got to write the script for Superman. It's absolutely hilarious and he tells it really well. I'm sure it's out there in youtubeland somewheres....
