I was bored, tired and sweaty on the 4th, so I found myself at the local Movieplex looking for relief. And I got it in spades. Yes, I went alone since my nieces had other plans, I said why not?

The air conditioned delight of a dark movie theatre took care of the tired and sweaty part, but Gru & company took care of the bored part, in spades.
Going in I prepared myself for a let-down (sequels often fail miserably) but my disappointment never materialized. The creators and writers did a masterful job of following up the surprise hit with a charming, cohesive and fun-filled sequel. I will only say this about the plot (since trailers have pretty much let the cat out of the bag) Gru meets his match in Lucy Wild, agent for the AVL or Anti Villain League.

Her mission: to recruit Gru as a counter-intelligence agent, a kind of spy vs. spy, if you will. Gru has other ideas, such as lead a domesticated life as a new father to the girls. But soon he's persuaded to work with the AVL and Lucy - HI-larity ensues. I'm not saying anything more than that, other than to say that the writers, as mentioned above, were spot-on when it came to furthering the adventures of the Gru family, but most especially the ever-loving Minions. They deserve equal billing as they brought the funny.
Clever gags and overall silliness from our little yellow heroes was sprinkled throughout the movie, interspersed generally between action and Gru's keen sensibilities as a spy, and Lucy's hilarious attempts at being a super-cool spy.

Kristen Wiig was spot-on great as the voice of the intrepid Ms. Wild, her personality shone through as her character navigated the thrilling heroics by our Despicable, but beloved, Gru. Steve Carell did his usual hilarious (there's that word again) take on the spy who came in with a cold. But matters were made complicated by the eldest of his adopted daughters when she suffers her first crush. You dads out there will appreciate it. There is one small picadillo I have with the screenplay. They didn't have enough of Ken Jeoung for my taste. His character had a very small part in the film and it seemed they didn't quite know what to do with him. But I quibble, because it's funny, funny, funny. Kids loved it and I heard the adults in the audience laughing just as hard. Two words - Fart Gun!

I chuckle in your general direction!

So I say, go, take the kids, don't take the kids - just go. A good time will be your reward.

PS.... Stay for the end credits

Coolness - I own the original on DVD naturally, and obviously am going to go see this when I get a chance to, cause I really liked the first one.

Gru seems to have wound up a villain not because of a black heart, although he's pretty crabby, but cause that was the only venue open to him in order to achieve his dreams, but as a villain he is very old school in all the best ways, cause as we learned in the first one, take away the lair, the toys, the minions, and Gru is still dangerous on a personal level, as his oppenent learns to his peril.

I am also interested in seeing the girls develop, while Agnes is too young and innocent, and Margo is a bit of a goody two shoes, I noted from the very start that Edith is seriously villain material, she's TOTALLY got the potential for it, and I wonder if they'll go on with that.

And of course, minions, meh heh heh!

I personally thought it was better than the original. And the original was pretty darn good.

Minions rule.

And yes. Stay for the credits.

Went and saw it today - I give it 94%
Goin on my DVD shelf as soon as they release.

Spoilery stuff.

Select to view spoiler:

GO EDITH, see, I knew she had villainous potential!
I also like how they set up 3D gags and game tie-in stuff without being obtrusive or breaking immersion, and of course, Doc Nefario getting the last laugh - "Cause I was wondering, under what circumstances would we ever use this ?", meh heh heh.

Awesomesauce.

I agree that the sequel rivals the original and could easily stand alone on it's own merits. It was good silly fun, but the story was furthered along by some clever writing and fun gags.

But I give the original an ever-so-slight edge.

I'm SO Happy!

I give it a 94.37599999999% (Couldn't resist, ;-)

But yeah, you have a point there, Edith is the designated Tom-boy of the bunch and she's tough. I can see her following in her dad's footsteps. But I really liked the addition of Lucy Wild into the mix.

I have the original DVD as well and play it whenever I need a good chuckle.
Gru seems to be the kinder, gentler villain now that he has the girls, but don't mess with any of them, or else! But old school is an understatement, but I like when they flashback to his childhood and the mean-spirited treatment he received growing up. It shows that he wasn't evil, but misunderstood.

I loved how they carried over his mean streak as he attempted to solve the case. That crabbiness hides his true feelings, but he's so good at it.
Glad you liked it, it is my favorite of the year, right in front of Wreck It, Ralph.
