I dont recall wen they started premiering blockbusterz on Wenzdayz, but I think this iz the 1st time they started on Tuezday. It wuz advertized az July 1st, but here it iz on June the 30th in all the 1st run theaterz.

Seemz to me this really goofs up any way uv figuring 'openning weekend' box offis numberz sins ulot uv fanz will see it befor Friday.

Are they figuring on getting a strong word uv mouth tsunami going, or iz this the 1st bad terminator movie and they want to cash in befor word gets out?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Most Wednesday premieres are close to holidays, in this case July 4th. Even when the premiere is Friday, there have been early showings on Thursday. I doubt I'll see it for a while, maybe not even in the cinema, but all the buzz about it has been positive.

I hate to say anything bad about my fave franchize, but this iz not a great movie.

Its not horrible. It haz its moments, but its way below par for a Terminator movie. Bad direction. Arnold did a great job. JK Simmonz wuz excellent, but alot uv the action wuz unmemorable and there were sum stoopid mistakes. The dialog wuz flat. All thingz considered, its worth a vizit tio the theater, but I feel like I'v watched an episode uv a TV show rather than a blockbuster epic movie.

IIRC ID4 was shown on Tuesday, 3 July 1996. I don't recall if that was evening or midnight showing. I didn't know T:G was going to be showing on Tuesday until I showed up at the cinema.

Of the blockbusters, this may be the best I've seen this year, need to think about relation to Mad Max. Have not seen Avengers yet.

Seems some scenes have been re-used from the original. Nudity has been omitted - arnold's frontal deleted.

I think this is only the second time that Arnold has appeared onscreen as 2 characters in the same scene. The other was Last Action Hero, as character Jack Slade and the bullied husband of Maria Shriver.

Also Sarah's nudity omitted, likely to get a better rating. At the time of the original, only good movies had R ratings, lesser ratings were for B movies.

I had more to post, but right now I can't get over the claim that no scenes were re-used.

TV Tropes is very much like the minute in the cartoon “Inside Out” where Joy and Sorrow find themselves being deconstructed in the region of Abstract Though. As in that cartoon, it can be dangerous to disassemble a not particularly good movie into it's clunky components.

Terminator: Genisys has the Magic Countdown, one of the most overused tropes in science-fiction. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagicCountdown

That one scene required an entire team to design and create a fully digital, photo-real Schwarzenegger, something that had never been done this extensively on screen with a living actor. The ambitious digital trickery required Stopsack’s team of animators and designers at MPC to labor for 12 tension-filled months to create 35 shots that fill a mere five minutes of screen time. When Stopsack, who has worked on Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men: Days of Future Past, first heard the idea of creating a synthetic actor—or “synthespian”—he was equal parts excited and terrified. “It’s a completely crazy idea due to the sheer complexity of the task,” he says. “To work on a digital human being is considered the holy grail in visual effects.”
Instead of a synthespian young Arnold Terminator, the movie producer should have hired real Summer Glau to beat the shit of old man Schwarzenegger. That would have been money well spent, better than paying a team of animators for 12 months. And besides, Summer has TV credits as a Terminator.

And it would be funnier when Summer Glau strolls up to the three thugs and says, "Give me your clothes."

I am wun uv the few peepl on Earth who didnt know that Arnold wuz the good guy in T2.

Because I've seen how bad professional writers are? Metacritic helpfully graphs the steady fall in quality of writing in Terminator movies. www.metacritic.com The visual part of the movies get better and better, but the words coming out of the actors' mouths, especially the reasons for their actions, get dumber and dumber.

Skynet has a really good trick to beat John Connor, a trick written by Laeta Elizabeth Kalogridis. A trick that is immediately nullified by another screenplay writer (Patrick Lussier, writer of Dracula III, Dracula II, Dracula 2000, a boatload of crap) giving Kyle Reese a vision of what the trick is. Two writers was one too many on this movie.

It is a spoiler to tell you that the trick is:

A Terminator will build Skynet in 2017. This time Skynet metastasizes into Genisys. Rather than H-bomb Earth, Genisys will control your smart phone, your TV and bank account.

Your smart electric meter will turn off power to your house because you have not paid your bill. Your credit cards will never work again at the grocery store! You will starve to death. And there will be liquid metal robots with machine guns in the streets to kill looters stealing cans of beans from the closed grocery stores.

It's an existential horror for humanity!

After Kyle Reese's mystical vision reveals Skynet's trick, Skynet sends a Terminator, for no worthwhile reason, to also tell Sarah Connor the evil plan, just to make extra certain that the evil plan will fail. Thank you very much writer Patrick Lussier for being a crap artist. You made Skynet stupider than an average human.

Only fire can redeem Terminator: Genisys. Fireworks will have to do. Time runs backwards in this video, starting at 3:08, just like a Terminator movie:

Like you sed, it duznt help to think too hard.

A real Skynet, being super intelligent, woud hav figured out the chain uv events in a second, then IF it still desided to launch the nukez, woud hav stored all available info about everybody. With this, it woud only need to distract the rite person at the rite moment or at most several key peepl in order to derail their livez if anything went rong in the future.

I had a movie idea back in 85 about this: The Urinator

Skynet sendz a syborg cat back to 1984 to pee on the leg uv the orijinal father
uv John Connor just az he iz heading out the door for hiz date with Sara. For good measure, he also runz in the apartment and hozez the whole plase down. That puts an end to that fateful date nite for sure. The Urinator will spend the rest uv its dayz following Sara around in case any other alternate baby daddy showz up. It will be programmed to assess potential fatherz, possibly allowing a hook up with a guy who will father a loozer.

No doomzday warning. No violent gun battlez. No hint that anybody iz uv special importans. Sara continuez to be a waitress at hamburger joints, possibly getting into drugz with her loozer boyfrend.

And if the timeline keeps skewing to create rebel leaderz, The Urinator iz still there to divert them or prevent them from being born.

I feel the masochistic need to take a brief detour here and mention Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which is notable for a lot of reasons, not least because it was the first time an actress from Game of Thrones played Sarah Connor. (Expect the Maisie Williams-fronted reboot sometime next decade.) Sarah Connor Chronicles ran for two seasons on Fox, ending its run just a month before Salvation hit theaters. It never quite found a groove, partially because the plot was built on helium nonsense, but there was a lot to love in the show. (James Cameron thinks so; he hired showrunner Josh Friedman as one of his Avatar sequel co-writers.)

I disagree about T3. He probably only saw it wuns, so didnt get sum uv the detailz.

Therez a much eazier way to think about it that duznt make it all seem like contradictory nonsense: Crosstime travel. The timelinez are not deleted by altering the past, a new timeline iz created.

I have to say, after seeing the movie, I have to agree with you 100% J0753.
There were moments, which has my thumb halfway, but it was unremarkable and Arnold was the best thing going for the movie.

Don't get me wrong I liked Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, but there wasn't any chemistry between Sarah and Kyle Reese, none whatsoever. And the dialogue was mediocre at best, and flat. I have to say, it was a good concept - changing the timeline - but making John Connor a cyborg!? My guess is they are trying to squeeze out a couple more of these. If that's the case, they desperately need better writing and better direction.

Room for improvement; YES!

1- Kill off Kyle Reese, he was horrible.
2- Bring back Michael Biehn and have him as the love interest, like Arnold, he's aged gracefully and that would make for an interesting subplot. Plus it would feed into the changed timeline scenario.
3- No more Arnold cyborgs. How about introducing a Sly Stallone cyborg (just a thought)
4- Stop with the over-the-top explosions. We get it, cyborgs crush things.
One of the cooler things they did was how they defeated the T-1000.
5- I did like how they re-wrote the timeline, but hated how they told you what they were going to do and then do it. It was very flat and unimaginative.
6- Bring back Michael Biehn, Joe Morton and, of course, Arnold. Even Linda Hamilton.

There, I fixed it!

I disagree. The identical cuts with Arnold I was talking about, not the new scenes with different actors, nor the new scenes with young Arnold.
I agree that garbage Truck Driver Chino Williams was replaced with Garbage Man Ernest Wells - I wasn't sure about that one at first.
I agree that Punks Bill Paxton, Brian Thompson, Brad Rearden were mostly replaced by Punk #1 John Edward Lee, #2 Christion Troxell, #3 Luke Sexton - except that Brad Rearden's hand still was copied in the shot where he snaps his fingers in front of Arnold.

OK, so they CGI's every pixel of every shot that they copied. That is just remastering, not duplicating the filming of the shot. I do not believe that every shot of 1984 Arnold from his appearance in the lightning ball to the appearance of Pops was re-shot, if any. If you want to claim that re-mastering with CGI is really the same as re-filming the same shot as a duplication attempt, I call you delusional.
You need to specify which cuts of which shots you feel are newly shot, never before exposed to film before 2010. I do agree that the re-used shots with Arnold's frontal nudity were edited to not show below the abdomen, but I state that the shot was the same.

Yes, I read the link. If the makers claim that they did not use one single frame of shot from the original to re-pixel or re-master, that not one cut was re-used between the identical shots of both Terminator and Genysis, then I call BS. I'm talking specifically of the shots of 1984 Arnold, not all the other characters which were re-cast.

"Seems to me you'd know better'n most of us," Mal mutters.

When she gives Mal the final coordinates, he frowns. "This ain't the right heading for landing." He punches the numbers up a second time. "It's not far off, but nary a thing at these numbers but empty space."

"I know," she says. "It's where we were. Or a close enough approximation. Degrees of flexibility in the system..."

Orbital mechanics...absolute position...expanding universe...

The crew doesn't even know they're here. Everyone's asleep. No idea what's about to happen. And Mal, for whatever reason, is still operating on trust.

Terminator 5 could have been good without Schwarzenegger. The movie makers squandered too much time and money creating a young Arnold to fight old Arnold.

An example of good filmmaking without old actors is Mad Max: Fury Road. Would that movie be better with a computer generated young Mel Gibson as Max? No, because it had a story that only needs character Max, not necessarily actor Gibson to play Max.

Even in the most chaotic fights and collisions, everything makes sense in Mad Max. Not true in Terminator 5. This is not a matter of realism — come on, now — but of imaginative discipline. Mad Max demonstrates that great action filmmaking is not only a matter of Computer Graphics but of ethics as well. There is cause and effect; there are choices and consequences. This clip with commentary from Mad Max shows how that is done. There is nothing sensible like it in Terminator 5.

Khaleesi was in Terminator 5. And we know Kaylee.

Did any of you stay to watch the coda?

I did notice our spelling has been wrong, it is Genisys.

That was the idea, which is what most franchise films try to do to maintain continuity. Think Back to the Futures.

However, turns out I was mostly wrong.
I had just watched Terminator, following the thread about actors portraying John Connor.
I was struck by the apparent duplication in the close-up head swivel in slo-mo when Arnold first stands up - as the first clear shot, this is always the most important to solidify the viewer's acceptance of the CGI continuity and they knew it and did it well. The part that had nagged at me but I ignored was the detail, the lack of sweat on Arnold's face during this closeup. The 1984 view shows the perspiration clearly (at least on my bluray disc version) and the 2015 shot has that fake-ish patina common to films which have been remastered for 3D compatibility. The worst one I saw was Beowulf with Hopkins and Jolie, and this shot barely has that fake-like patina, but the missing perspiration shows it is not a pixel-for-pixel copy. It is up to the individual whether the difference between CGI'd copy of the original onto the newly shot stand-in actor is a real difference or whether it is "new" or "re-used". In the new shot, the camera angle is different comparing the foregraound and background. The backdrop directly behind his head in 1984 is the almost level forks of the garbage truck at about ear level, and in 2015 those forks are much lower. But the hair and face minus sweat are duplicates.
The shot prior, with the driver running away and lightning ball, the camera angle was also different, the 1984 camera position being more right, and 2015 being more to the left. Arnold's Latissimus has different development and contour from 1984 to 2015 stand-in.
The shot with Arnold walking away from the Griffiths Observatory was where, in 1984, Arnold's frontal nudity was apparent, and the camera angle was from a camera position more to the left. For 2015 the camera is more to the right, with the Terminator more directly approaching the camera (in 1984 the new concept of the Terminator might have been much more frightening if directly approaching the audience, and now we can handle it), and the lighting is more to his back instead of side, keeping all frontal nudity in complete shadow, even though the frame bottom is below his feet. I do wonder if there have been any renovations, or street changes to the front of the Griffiths Observatory, assuming they didn't use a set.
The next shot is with the punks, and in 1984 Arnold's hair is different at the part. In 2015 the hair remains the same as it was in the opening slow head pivot shot. Also, the cut from the back-right of Terminator shows the less-developed tricep of the stand-in compared to the mass of 1984 Arnold.
The thing which had nagged me as unauthentic during the Terminator vs. Pops clash was the scrappy nature of the movement of Terminator, not at all the less fluid movement of Arnold that we've all seen from his films.

You're worried about no sweat on Arnold? You better worry about the next two Terminator movies having no story because they are sequels to this stinking dead skunk of a movie. The setpieces are mostly rehashing better scenes from earlier films, feel thrown together to serve the effects, and look far less astonishing than anything in Cameron's first two films. Action scenes seem mandated by a stop-watch and almost invariably warmed-over versions of stuff we've seen elsewhere. Everything's at stake yet nothing comes to much.

Looking at tickets sales, Terminator: Genisys (2015) is doing poorly compared to previous Terminator movies. www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=terminator.htm

Maybe badly enough to cancel Untitled Terminator 2 (2017) 19 May 2017 and Untitled Terminator 3 (2018) 29 June 2018. Now I know why this movie did not kill Kyle Reese. He's needed in 2018. Only then will he die.

I meant your spelling. Tat, Tot, or Taut? Eether or Ither? I've heard both in film and screen. Add in Canadian translations makes a whole new dynamic.

It is a bad sci-fi movie because it does not take any of its ideas seriously. I don't think there has ever been a movie that even half-heartedly tries to follow the real physics of how a time machine can work. See Time Travel: A Writer's Guide to the Real Science of Plausible Time Travel Paperback – February 7, 2011 www.amazon.com/Time-Travel-Writers-Science-Plausible/dp/1421400820/

Chapter 7 "When General Relativity Made Time Travel to the Past Honest" starts with a poem: The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on; nor all your pity nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it.

And the other big idea in this movie, besides time travel, is a human with the power of a Terminator (and I do mean a human, not some human shaped puppet programmed by Skynet to kill-kill-kill Sarah Connor). This movie plays with the idea for about 2 minutes and then it falls right back into the trite "It's really a murderously crazy Terminator hiding behind a disguise, it was never human at all!" This outburst motivated by a comic I saw today where a machine is a human. http://dresdencodak.com/2015/07/08/dark-science-49-exode/

I would like to see Sarah Connor take advantage of the fact that she can emotionally manipulate her son.

Select to view spoiler:

At the end of the movie she tricks John using a mother's love. He's heartbroken, then she kills him. That will jolt the audience. How could a mother be such a badass to her only son?

I'm presuming that writer Laeta Elizabeth Kalogridis knows what she is doing, but the other writer, Patrick Lussier, who gave the world Dracula III, Dracula II and Dracula 2000, is an idiot. I'm sad to say the five executive producers of T5 could not come to an agreement about which one of these two writers was the idiot, fired him and erase every word he wrote from the T5 screenplay.

Fair enuf. You make a strong case.

There coud be a good outkum.

Seeing that this extreemly lucrativ franchize iz at risk, they hire a better team to continue the trilojy.

Or, they proseed to make 2 with the same guyz and it bomz, then Cameron gets angry and showz them how its dun by making a serious sequel, perhaps continuing where Salvation left off.

Look at Batman and Superman. Both hav had sum stinkerz, yet rallyed back to greatness.

Sure. But Arnold won't live forever. And many have argued that the Terminator role was made for him, even though he was not the original cast member for that role.

The franchize iz not dependent on Arnold. Salvation wuz great without any actual Arnold.

He wuz orijinally asked to be the Reese karacter and it wuz hiz idea to be the Terminator. (Or so the story goez)

Wiki has the story of casting for Terminator:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terminator#Pre-production
After the meeting, Cameron returned to money man John Daly at Hemdale Pictures saying Schwarzenegger would not play Reese but that "he'd make a hell of a Terminator". Schwarzenegger was not as excited by the film; during an interview on the set of Conan the Barbarian, an interviewer asked him about a pair of shoes he had (which were for The Terminator). Schwarzenegger responded, "Oh some shit movie I'm doing, take a couple weeks."

Cameron chose Michael Biehn for the role of Reese. Biehn was originally skeptical about the part, feeling that the film was silly. After meeting with Cameron, Biehn stated his "feelings about the project changed". Producer Gale Anne Hurd stated that "almost everyone else who came in from the audition was so tough that you just never believed that there was gonna be this human connection between Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese. They have very little time to fall in love. A lot of people came in and just could not pull it off."

Cameron wanted his pitch for money man John Daly to finalize the deal and had his friend Lance Henriksen show up to the meeting dressed and acting like the Terminator. . . . Daly was impressed by the screenplay and Cameron's sketches and passion for the film. . . . Cameron found a role for Lance Henriksen as Detective Hal Vukovich, as Henriksen had been essential to finding finances for the film.

I don't recall if I thought it at the time, but perhaps part of the reason Hicks didn't trust Bishop in Aliens was due to Reese's experience with Detective in Terminator.

Michael Biehn = Kyle Reese
Lance Henriksen = Detective Hal Vukovich

Aliens 1986
Michael Biehn = Cpl. Dwayne Hicks
Lance Henriksen = Bishop

So Linda Hamilton was originally signed on to have sex with Arnold on screen?

Hmmmmmm.

And then the director changed the actor in the sex-with-Linda role.

Hmmm.

And the director dated Linda on set and then married her.

Hmmm.

I wonder if the director's desires were affected by his libido.

Hmmmm.

I wonder if jealousy played a part.

How much of this cinematically historic casting would have been changed without Jim's attraction to Linda?

And Arnold said it was just a shit movie.

No. Director Cameron went to his first meeting with Schwarzenegger with a bad attitude -- he was going to find some plausible reason to reject Arnold. Cameron was thinking, "How can this son of a Nazi act if he can't speak English?" Cameron was not a fan of Arnold's movies. The two were forced to meet because John Daly, the man with the money, insisted. Remember Arnold being elected governor? He was terrible in that role, but he gives good meeting, as they say in Hollywood.
