I loved it. I want to see it again in Cinema, at least another time. Although it had the hype of Episode 1, this one delivers, like Episode 4 did.

Very enjoyable.

Rogue One/Serenity similarities beyond starring Alan Tudyk.

MEGA SPOILER WARNING! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN 'ROGUE ONE' TURN BACK NOW!!!

For those who have seen 'Rogue One', did anybody else think that the ending was pretty similar to 'Serenity'? I'm not accusing the writers of ripping it off or anything, just a lot of similarities:

Large sky battle. It's Star Wars though so this is obvious.

The final land battle is centered around taking a data tape with information about the evil government and broadcasting it via a big antenna.

Alan Tudyk's character dies early in the final conflict.

Things don't go easily in broadcasting the information and so the protagonist has to jump and climb up onto a platform with a long fall below, all while being closely pursued by the villain.

The bad guy is left alive, hurt but alive, at the broadcast platform as the hero(es) hobble away.

Again, not saying the movie ripped off our movie or anything, I quite enjoyed 'Rogue One', but my first thought after it was over was "Wow, that had a very similar ending to 'Serenity'."

Anyone notice that K2SO did Wash's "flick 3 switches" when they getting ready to leave Yavin 4 the first time? I may have miscounted, but it looked like 3 to me.

I enjoyed the movie.

I forgot to mention that one thing which bothered me the most was that many of the best scenes in trailers and clips where left out of the film.

Both were pilots and both had great lines. And didn't K2S0 say something like ' we're coming - for you ' or some such ? Reminded me of when Wash was talking to Zoe, before eventually saving them all w/ the barnswallow maneuver. Forget the exact line, but I thought of Wash as soon as I heard him say it.

And apparently I'm the only one in the 'verse who has an issue w/ the ending to Rogue 1 and the opening scene of Ep 4, A New Hope.

I actually did not like the movie, and neither did my crew. I get there wasn't time for character development, but there really wasn't ANY in this, and half of the scenes were nightmare level busy. Several times I looked at hubby and asked when it would be over, as all but the last quarter of the movie d.r.a.g.g.e.d. on. Even had the stereotypical "opening and closing of the dangerous vent" thing from Galaxy Quest. I went into it knowing that all the characters would die, but there was no inspiration to be gleaned here. I didn't care when they died, except for the damn robot.

They even managed to make the death of the Asian guy feel like they were making fun of the force. It was more dumb luck, him pulling the lever, than any connection with the force. His sidekick might as well have been wearing a red shirt...

I won't own it, and I won't be watching it again. But then, hype doesn't make me like a movie more...

Yeah. Diplomatic denial, I don't see it as a big deal - or are you taking the words as literally factual statements? Is this really a lack of continuity?

Also Spoilers:
I also thought it familiar territory when the protagonists must forge forward to get the media (Jin +2 in R1, Mal in BDM) while the rest stay back and hold off the overwhelming forces (the rebel volunteers in R1, the BDH in BDM), and also when the surprising and unplanned help turns the tables on the bleak outlook and squashes the enemy (Rebel Dog fighters defying their Council in R1, River's "My Turn" against Reavers in BDM)

Also, when K2 conveys his final face-to-face line to Jin, I was reminded of Simon speaking to Mal at the end of Serenity - but this was the Pilot Episode Serenity.

I had not been aware that all of the key players would die, but understood that a few pivotal agents would sacrifice, based upon the lines in A New Hope. Wishi- did you enjoy other films in the 7 film (besides R1) franchise so far? If so, which and why?

I'm talking about the entire sequence of events as being ridiculous , in every way ! First, the Princess is a member of the Senate, no ? What the hell is she doing in a full scale battle ? She's not in space battle gear, she's likely not studied at space-military academy, right ? If her ' cover ' is to be a 'diplomatic' representative, why risk her being on the front lines, as it were ?

Second, who is she trying to fool ? The ship was clearly JUST IN A MAJOR BATTLE , which the Rebels attacked an Empire base. It completely changes the focus of the opening of ANH if they really are on a cover trip to some diplomatic mission, and are covertly trying to get the plan to the Rebel base. Origianlly, the Empire comes off as all iron fisted and heavy handed, pulling over anyone and everyone they want, just cause or not. But here, it's clear they were attacked, the ship in the battle tried to make an escape, was caught, and ...

" Oh, us ? We're on a diplomatic mission, ... yeah, that's the ticket ! "

Lame !

Oh yeah. Even bought these tickets on the internets to be sure we got in, sometimes we are late, and it's a small theater.

I had guessed they would kill just about everyone off just because it was a one shot movie. They didn't want to be left with straggling questions and threads to pick up. Plus, it would bring extra meaning to the whole "many people died to bring us this info." The only thing it had to achieve for the cannon was an "In Memoriam" feel when you leave, and it did that. There was no emotional connection for me at all. Jyn didn't really care about taking down the Empire until they talked her into going and the whole rousing speech felt contrived and faked. I had no reason to really care about the protagonist...she was just a victim of circumstance. If I knew the Empire had killed a part of my family, and held the rest hostage, my honor would demand someone's head on a plate or I would die trying. Instead, she shrugged her shoulders and said "whatever" for 20 years. Reeeeal inspiration there.

I had not really thought there were a pile of gaping errors, and don't recall people debating such, unlike the obvious boondoggle of Star Trek.
Quote:

First, the Princess is a member of the Senate, no ?

No. The story I got from watching the films was that she was Senator in Episode 1, and then in Episode 2 she had reached her term limit and was no longer a Senator. Or maybe that was Episode 3.
Quote:

What the hell is she doing in a full scale battle ?

In which Episode? In One she was sorta plucked, or kidnapped, or caught up when visiting Anakin, wasn't she? She was being held captive by the Empire, right?
Quote:

You talking about a particular Episode, or throughout Ep 1-3?
Quote:

Second, who is she trying to fool ?

Don't call me Second - that is a different sock puppet than me.

I'm trying to recall. R2D2 and C3PO were jettisoned from Leia's ship onto Tantooine, residence of Obi-Wan, right? R2D2 had the Plans, right?
If this is correct, I don't see a change in context here. If I recall this correctly, we already knew that these plans were on Leia's ship. The R2D2 jettison was to circumvent the discovery during the inevitable catch and boarding of Leia's ship by the Empire, and then ANH's mission was to get the plans back to Leia, and all the way to the Rebel Command. Along the way some Luke guy got tangled up in the intrigue. Do I have all that right? If so, it sounds like the story was the same before R1 comes out.
I don't see a difference, can you point it out? I'm not trying to be dense, I'm just not sure where the holes are or IIRC.
Quote:

Origianlly, the Empire comes off as all iron fisted and heavy handed, pulling over anyone and everyone they want, just cause or not.

Ummm. PLANET killer? Hello? They already indiscriminately torched a rebel-friendly city plus a religious Mecca-like place, even if they've been raping the place for Kyber crystals awhile. And in this "battle" they annihilate another city, an Empire place, with folks expecting some immunity from Empire horrors since they live in, yanno, an Empire-protected place.
What part of that does not scream "iron-fisted" or "heavy handed" to you?
And then the early part of ANH they obliterate Anderal?? - sorry I just drew a blank on the name.

I thought she "knew" that her father was working for the Empire, laboring to create this Death Star, an embarrassment to her and her kin. Her turnaround is when she sees the hologram message, her dad explains what he has been doing all these years, and how to save the galaxy thanks to him.
I can understand her not wanting to be known as the daughter of the Benedict Arnold of her Universe, and also her change of tune once she learns the truth, even when nobody else believes her.

She saw her mother killed, she knew they were coming for him and why, she knew he had no choice but to go with him, and she decided not to care for 20 years. Her loyalty was underwhelming. Even when she saw the hologram, she didn't readily sign up, she had to be talked into it. Her dad was awesome, her? Not so much...

Wow... It's amazing how cheap the internet has made movies. I remember buying the original trilogy on VHS in the late 90's for 30 bucks, back when gas was around 90 cents a gallon.

Is it the actual original trilogy, or the "Special Edition"?

BTW... I haven't downloaded and watched it yet, but there is a fan project online that has re-created the original trilogy as it was released in the theaters. This version was never seen again after the original theatrical runs, as it was edited for every home release and later theatrical showings. I watched a video on youtube about the history of this project and the many tricks they've used to pull this off.

I'm looking forward to eventually seeing this because I wasn't even born when the first movie came out so I've never seen this version before.

Really?
I thought copies of the first 3 were kept unavailable until the 90s, just before the 20th Anniversary.

I do recall that most every home viewing tape cost about $80, I think the same for VHS and BetaMax, but don't recall any Star Wars ever among them. Individual ownership was embargoed for a long time on SW.

Would have been before my time, for sure. I don't believe I ever saw the Star Wars movies until they were on cable TV when I was around 6 or 7 years old.

I do remember seeing a commercial for Willow being released on VHS for over $100 back in the 80's!

I think that maybe Lucasfilm was charging the public the same licensing fees that they were charging video stores like Blockbuster.

I don't know what to say except that you're wrong. Any casual search will show you that. It had releases on Betamax, VHS, and Laser Disc. By the time the 20th Anniversary came about, I had 4 different releases including a sweet Boxset that had VHS Letterbox versions.

I haven't checked Target, but I'd bet the blurays on sale are Special Editons, since it would be pretty big news if the original Theatrical versions were released on bluray.

Maybe I was in a backwater. Not like I searched on the web, because algore had not yet invented the Internet by the early 80's.

what diferences are there between SEs and Theatrical release, other than the retroactive digitalized garbage added in?

Well, thanks to Al Gore we do have the internet now, so I'll let you search for the answers you seek.

Bless you, Al Gore!!!

Do Right, Be Right. :)

i don't know which versions, I meant the Episodes IV-VI.

I didn't have the details, it was out of stock at most locations. It's actually 6 discs, a BR and standard for each film. The store I bought at had several in stock, with the price shown as $50, but rang up as $15.

The BR ANH had Jabba in it.

It looks amazing. From what I can tell, he's still doing work to improve it.

I'm wondering if the version I had taped off of HBO when I was a kid was the original theatrical run, or if there had already been edits to it. I was only 2 years old when TESB came out.

Looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah, it’s a work in progress for him. I saw one of his early ones and it was great.
I can just imagine what he’s come up with now, with much better TVs and all.

I think HBO version (80s) would have been slightly edited, the main thing was adding the Episode IV A New Hope title to the crawl.

I'm surprised that Lucas or I guess Disney these days haven't shut him down yet. It's not as though he's doing this on the sly anywhere, and even if he was the video on youtube has links in the description where you can go to download these things. It makes me think that somehow they still don't even know that he's doing what he's doing.

There would always be places he could do this stuff and collaborate with others in the darkness, but it doesn't even look like any attempt has really been made here to hide it.

I don't think he'd have much to worry about if he was digitally upgrading Manos The Hands of Fate, but Star Wars?

Maybe there are higher ups at Disney who know about this and disagree with Lucas' take on it. They're probably letting this guy see his work to fruition so they can just take it from him without any monetary compensation and resell it to the public and make some good money off of a zero sum investment.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Waiting for the completed work before stealing it sounds like a plan.

Will they allow a similar action with Firefly?

That's what I'd be doing right now if I was in a position of power at Disney.

You're never going to get the people who download it now for free to ever pay for it, and you can't put the shit back in the horse. It's already out there and it's not going away.

But at the same time there are a lot of people who would gladly pay good money to see this and own it in a physical medium.

It doesn't even have to be a horror story of the Big Bad Disney crushing somebody. This guy hasn't ever asked anybody for any money for the work he's done. He's gladly giving it away to anyone who will watch it.

I doubt that Disney would ever call it something like "Harmy's Despecialized Edition", but it wouldn't surprise me if he got his name somewhere in the credits in the case. Hell... Instead of taking legal action against him, Disney might offer a guy with his talent a decent gig to boot.

What did you have in mind here? Some film students making their own fanfiction reboot? I don't see the parallels to this project and any possibility with new Firefly stuff.

Tony Gilroy on 'Rogue One' Reshoots: They Were in "Terrible Trouble"

The screenwriter, who salvaged the 'Star Wars' project, says the situation was so dire, "all you could do was improve their position."

Tony Gilroy is getting candid for the first time about his emergency trip to the Star Wars galaxy. . . . Choosing his words carefully, Gilroy signaled how much of the project was changed after he boarded. (Star Ben Mendelsohn has said "an enormously different" version of the film exists.)

Director Gareth Edwards' final version of the movie stunk to the heavens. Gilroy was paid $5,000,000 for surgery -- to cut out all the rotten parts that were stinking up Rogue One. Gilroy shot new scenes that were spliced into the movie that went into theaters. He replaced the diseased scenes with healthy tissue.

There's no reason not to post it here.

The third paragraph of the very first link:

Quote:

First, there's Rogue One, last year's Star Wars movie, which launched a large range of products...and many of them are still hanging around. Retail buyers aren't necessarily toy collectors or fans who distinguish between individual movies, so if they see Star Wars toys from last year still hanging around on shelves, they won't necessarily be excited to order a lot more.

The merchandising is a big part of the franchise, but when you have 2 movies making over $2 billion together, I don’t think you have to worry about life support just yet. I do think the franchise is on a downward slope, though. I haven’t even finished TLJ yet.

Well... they didn't "make" 2 billion. Not after counting how much it cost to make and advertise the movies.

Quote:

[The Force Awakens] broke various box office records and became, unadjusted for inflation, the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, the highest-grossing film in North America, the highest-grossing film of 2015, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time, with a worldwide gross of over $2 billion and a net profit of over $780 million.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Force_Awakens

Quote:

Deadline.com calculated the net profit of [Rogue One] to be $319.6 million, when factoring together all expenses and revenues for the film, making it the 3rd most profitable release of 2016.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_One

Quote:

[The Last Jedi] is also the second-highest-grossing film of the Star Wars franchise, and turned a net profit of over $417 million.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Last_Jedi

The Three movies, including Rogue One, only "made" 1.5 Billion, and more than half of those profits were from The Force Awakens.

None of these figures account for all of the product advertisement and production costs for products that didn't end up selling well either. I haven't found numbers about these costs at this time. It's possible that the cost for advertising wasn't that much because the makers were depending on the movies to do most of the advertising for them.

Quote:

Even more toy-licensed films are scheduled, including the prequel “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and new Transformers, “Fantastic Beasts,” “Jurassic World” and superhero fare. The lesson toymakers will draw from the 2017 slate is that they can’t just rely on the movie to do the marketing anymore.

“There is a new paradigm,” Johnson (an analyst for BMO Capital Markets) said. “Just because there is a movie with a toy tie-in doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to work. It used to mean it would work.”

Quote:

Following the poor box office performance, now it's learned that toy sales for Star Wars: The Last Jedi have tanked big time, which is a major problem as sales on toys can account for upwards of 3 times compared to the movie's gross.

One of the problems that Star Wars now faces is that what was once expected as the norm (making upwards of 3 times the movies gross on toys) is no longer to be expected at all. This is a problem.

If that number is to be believed, the toy sales so far could have possibly meant another $4+ billion dollars if they sold as well as was expected. This is not something that future investors in the franchise are going to disregard.

EDIT: I just re-read that data and the quote says "upwards of 3 times compared to the movie's gross." I was calculating for the Net profits. I'm not sure if the article really meant Gross though. I find it hard to believe that anyone expected the toys from the 3 movies so far were going to pull in somewhere between 14 and 18 Billion... who knows.
