Remember the first time you saw Indiana Jones running from a huge boulder, and then running away from tribesmen in the jungles of South America? How about Rambo?

The remake of Tomb Raider brings those personalities back to life in the latest installment of the woman most likely to...
There was action from the word Go! But this was a more down-to-earth Lara Croft; a more human Lara Croft, a lovely human with a sense of adventure.
Oh don't worry, it's not so derivative that it compels you to get up and walk out. No, far from it!

The stunts she pulls makes it seem that any young woman with a rock-solid physique could certainly pull it off. Vikander, as our hero Lara, makes us root for her because she's human and just a shade under spectacular. She's no superhero. She's just a girl who happens to be very fit and loves adventure. We find out that she's a smart girl and can figure out puzzles, maps and such.

She's street savy and a quick study. Now, mind you, I'm already in love with Alicia Vikander (I'm still amazed at her portrayal as a robot in Ex Machina), so I admit that right from the start. So I may be a bit prejudice, and she makes any other Lara look weak and flat by comparison.
This role called for some true emotion regarding the relationship between Lara and her father, Lord Richard Croft. Dominic West and Vikander establish fine chemistry as the father/daughter Crofts.

Norwegian film director Roar Uthaug (now that's more of an action hero name, than that of a director), chose to start from the beginning and reimagine Lara's beginnings as a fresh-faced twenty something who misses her father tremendously, but she's no shrinking violet either. This girl did not attend university, and she works for a living despite her father's fortune. She's a bike messenger. You can't get anymore human than that. Just an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent. She's intrigued to go find a hidden tomb on a secluded island which, of course, is cursed.

It is fast-paced and leaves little room for you to take a deep breath. So don't blink, if this were a novel it would be a page turner. Was it great? No, but it's lots of fun. Like a rollercoaster ride with a crazy friend.

Hope it was better than the Jolie flick(s?). I only saw about 5 minutes of one of them while I was on break one night and it was laughably bad. It was the scene where she was exercising on the bungee things and the thugs came in with about 50 automatic weapons and couldn't hit her. It must have been their first day.

Actually, it was better than the Jolie version of Lara. Croft was more like Indiana Jones meets Rambo. They made it as close to real as possible and followed the premise of the game. She was part puzzle solver, part adventurer and a down-to-earth commando. It was fun, but please don't take any of this seriously, just sit back and check your mind at the door.

They obviously went for realism. Both Vikander and Dominic West commit to their roles, but don't expect too much character development. It's a funhouse of cinematic action.

I dunno. I might get around to watching it one day. The Indiana Jones comparisons leave me intrigued.

The only video game movies I've ever really liked are Uwe Boll's movies.

I saw some of Alicia's interviews. She said she kept thinking the stunts weren't going to look any good, based upon how difficult it was to set up the shots. But when she saw the final cut she was amazed they actually were edited very well.

I have already made comparison between Vikander and Natalie Portman, regarding their skills and talents. In the Annihilation thread, connected by Oscar Isaac.

In Tomb Raider Alicia displays the physique reminiscent of Star Wars Ep I. Couldn't tell if it was a painted effect.

This might be a bit shallow, but it suddenly occurred to me that of the 2 film versions of TR, each Actress cast had a resume with scenes of graphic nudity, not a stitch of clothing. That is not a highly frequent trait.

I do feel that this was better than the Jolie entry.

Anybody know why Nick Frost was uncredited?
