SHINYGOODGUY

It was really hot this weekend to do anything but go to the beach (or pool) to
keep cool, so I decided to go to the movies. Makes sense , right!? And since
I love going to the movies, that was pretty much a no-brainer.

Saw TAG on Saturday (that was fun). But today, I wanted to see what all the
hub-bub was about surrounding Ocean's 8. Let me tell you, I did not have this
movie on my must-see list, so I wasn't really anxious to see this movie. So,
that is to say, my expectations weren't really high.

Well, here it goes. It was beautifully shot (except the screen in the theater
wasn't exactly perfect. There was a bit of haze on the screen) and it was
filled with glamorous people doing glamorous things. It was well paced and
well thought out as to plot and story. It had some laughs and giggles. Beautiful
set pieces. I wasn't crazy about the music selection, but it served it's purpose.
And, as heist movies go, it was well thought out (as I said above), with a nice
twist at the end. But it felt much like having Chinese for dinner, an hour later
I was hungry.

Can't quite put my finger on it. But there you have it. The performances were
okay, I especially was enjoying Helena Bonham-Carter (I think she's really
underrated as an actor). She was totally goofy playing a ditzy fashion designer
who was on her way down in her field. And I liked newcomer Awkwafina (an Asian
rapper and TV personality), who played a gifted pickpocket named Constance.
There was also TV Host, James Corden, who played a bloodhound insurance investigator. But my favorite was Anne Hathaway, who played a ditzy, obnoxious
actress/celebrity named Daphne Kluger. An unsuspecting social climber who was
being used to pull off the heist of the century. OMG, I almost forgot, among
them one of my favorite actresses, Sarah Paulson. She too was very good, clever
and funny.

What I felt was unnecessary was the obligatory introduction to the team, the
gathering of criminal experts, you know, the mastermind (Bullock), the weary
partner (Blanchette), the security/computer expert (Rihanna, who was actually quite good), the diamond expert (Mindy Kaling), etc. You get the picture, It
was like walking into a house with the real estate agent, he walks into the kitchen and says: "Here's the kitchen." We know, but what makes the kitchen unique
is my question. What makes these characters special? Why did Bullock's character
Debbie Ocean, pick these particular women? Aside from their skill, what was
special about them?

I feel like I've seen this movie before, what was unique was that these were
women. But give us a different perspective. Yes, they can do what men do, but
I wanted more (especially after seeing the movie). I was a bit disappointed because, aside from some dialogue about how women are never really noticed for their special talent, the screenplay didn't show us anything new, other than
it was women pulling off the heist. I understand the premise, but show us something different. Don't just regurgitate a male plot featuring women. Don't
get me wrong, it was a clever enough heist, but show it to us from the women's
point of view. Maybe that's why I felt a bit "hungry" an hour later,
empty calories.

3 out of 5 Stars!
