So, post viewing, and it was decent. A few jokes were a bit too on the nose, but it was still cleverly done.

Sorry, but some of Pika's lines were damn near Deadpool , minus the profanity. Could have been me though, as I've seen Deadpool and DP2 so many times.

The movie is obviously loaded w/ Pokémon references and gags, most of which went right over my head.

Reporter girl reminded me of a young Mary Elizabeth Winstead,

I don't know from pokeman.

Was the reporter Lucy Stevens? She was in 3 Billboards.

I had heard about this, but now you got me interested. Might see it next week after John Wick.

Yeah, Lucy is the April O'Neil of Pokémon, I assume. ( April if the female reporter who is friends w/ the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.) TMNJ is another franchise which was after my time, and I couldn't care less about, but I find it funny the ' plucky female reporter ' type character appears in both. Any excuse to get a independent , hottish female in the mix for young boys , I guess.

John Wick sounds good, from all accounts, but I've yet to see it. Seems real similar to The Punisher, so I guess that's why I've not gotten around to watching any of those movies.

Next up for me - Godzilla:KOTM

The John Wick films have both Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne, so many people find a parallel to Matrix.

It might be similar to Payback, from Mel Gibson. Or some Eastwood revenge flicks, with more guns and fighting. Maybe some Mad Max, but not in an apocalypse.

Interesting note about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). In Europe, they are the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (TMHT).

During that time in children's programming and video games, many European countries, especially Germany, had a ban on most types of violence in shows and games, particularly a ban on anything referring to Ninjas.

What's funny is that I've heard that the shows and the games saw very little editing themselves, which had a good deal of references to Ninjas, but made it past the censors by changing the titles alone.

I didn't know Laurence Fishburn, the former Mr. Gina Torres, was in John Wick.

Also, I'm guessing the ' Ninja ' in Europe was seen as 'racist' ? Weirdos.

Actually, no. This was the mid 90's though. I could see that happening today.

It was all about "muh violence" back then. It was mostly because of German laws. Video games back then were released in the PAL format instead of the NTSC format that was used in the US and Japan because of the differences in electric to the home in Europe. So the games actually had to have a bit of re-coding done anyhow to make it fit that format, so basically whatever the most oppressive censorship laws were was usually the only version of the game Europe saw. (Oddly enough, the games were rarely ever coded to match the actual speed of the game. Seems Nintendo couldn't be bothered with that since the NES was a very poor seller in Europe. So their games were quite a bit slower and easier than the US and Japan versions).

Don't know if you remember Contra? Nobody in Europe did. Thanks to Germany's law banning all "human" violence in video games, they got "Probotector" instead.

Same game. Same violence. But all the humanoid characters were replaced with robots.

Weird... I saw something last night about the original Ninja Turtles movie and all scenes of Michelangelo welding nunchucks had to be removed from the movie for the UK release. The staff, sais and swords were okay I guess.

I also thought it was really everybody in Europe getting the watered down versions of entertainment for the lowest common denominator of censorship at the time (Germany), but it seems that quite a few of the European countries in my childhood had strict laws about what entertainment was legal.

I kept forgetting to post the last few days, but MIB is out. Plus some Zombie movie with Bill Murray.
The next upcoming release on my personal list is in October, some zombie movie with Bill Murray. Huh.

I had seen that The Kid was scheduled for release a few weeks ago. But now I see that it was supposedly released in March. With Adam Baldwin. In a western. And I heard Chris Pratt is unrecognizable, but awesome.

Main actress wants the next movie to be called "People in Black" or "Humans in Black", although she admits that PiB sounds like a sandwich and HiB sounds like something you don't want to get.

Joke's on her though. The new MiB movie will likely be the death of the franchise.

I think Tessa Thompson, who I've kinda adored, was asked the question, and she just responded. I wish movie reporters wouldn't ask the actors such questions, because it's not HER call to name the movie, or the franchise.

Hollywood is so over reating to the Harvey stuff, it's trying to pay penance by being ' woke ' and submitting to the SJW nonsense. If they truly wanted to make money, they'd go the other way, run counter to the current gestapo tactics, and toss in some Mel Brooks style humor. Remember that ? When Hollywood reveled in being bad and naughty, in the face of perceived Christian morality ? Now we've got a new authoritarian lynch mob, all dressed in Antifa black..

Pity.

Yup.

This is exactly what's going on now. It's the Satanic Panic all over again, only this time it's the godless entertainment industry attempting to impose its morals on everyone.

Men In Black: International grosses under $29 Million in its opening weekend, under expectations.

Unless the terrible reviews result in a sharp drop off after opening weekend, the film is now expected to at least make back its production budget worldwide. But as we learned from the Ghostbusters reboot, that is just enough to kill a franchise, since the marketing budget usually doubles the cost of making the movie.

Rotten Tomatoes critics scores for all four movies:

Men in Black: 92
Men in Black II: 39
Men in Black III: 68
Men in Black International: 23

Opening Weekend take (not adjusted for inflation):

Men in Black: $51 Million (1997)
Men in Black II: $52 Million (2002)
Men in Black III: $54 Million (2012)
Men in Black International: $28 Million (2019)

Should probably put this in the Get Woke, Go Broke thread.

I see Taylor Swift released a new video, very gay friendly for PRIDE month. Despite it being filled with gay icons ( I'll take their word on that ) and a clear reference to GLADD , to which Taylor makes donations to and it's seen an uptick due to her efforts, there's still at least one SLATE writer who felt it necessary to bash on Swift.

There literally is no pleasing these Dalek minded zealots. All they want to do is destroy everything around them.

Kinda like those who suffer from TDS. Oh well.

Taylor Swift’s New Single Is a Teachable Moment About How Not to Be an Ally

The singer’s would-be Pride anthem is a cringeworthy attempt to write another “Born This Way.”

LOL...

That broad was going to bitch about one thing or another on June 14th. I'm sure the hypocrisy of putting Taylor Swift in the headline of that article to get a lot more ad revenue from views flies right over the heads of her supporters.

Here's the list of articles she's written. Most follow that theme.

https://slate.com/author/christina-cauterucci

She'll probably need to learn to code sooner than later. A lot of "journalists" of her caliber have been laid off recently.

But seriously though... what could possibly be in Swift's "ally" song that Lilly Allen didn't already say in "Fuck You Very Much"?

Full Disclosure: I actually love this song, hypocrisy and all (and it's just dripping with it, I suspect, unironically). It makes me laugh every time I hear the chorus.

I'd imagine this is going to confuse my 5 year old niece.

Her favorite Disney Princess is Tiana and she dressed up as her for some tea party at a cruise they went on last year and got to sit with her. The actress playing her was so touched by it that she came to their room the last day of the cruise and gave her a coloring book that she wrote a nice little inspirational message in and signed.

I don't think she's going to get the black Ariel thing.

If I was black, or a woman, or anybody else besides a white male who's "culture" is being "appropriated" on a daily basis now, I would be extremely insulted that nobody in Hollywood can seem to come up with any new and interesting characters that aren't re-hashes of tired old typically white, typically male franchises.

It's probably at least 10 years old. It never occurred to me that it was directed at GWB until you mentioned it. Are you sure about that?

I mean, it could have been, but I don't think the rabid leftists were full fledged SJW against GWB like they dog Trump every day of the week in 2019. There were plenty of legitimate gripes to have about GWB without needing to cry like an idiot baby about 1st world problems incubated on college campuses.

Without knowing anything about the song or about Lily Allen herself besides that song, I just always assumed she wrote it as a literal F You to anybody who did anything she sang about in the song.

I'd bought her 2nd album, I think it was, but hadn't heard the FYVM song until I saw it posted here. So I looked it up, and sure enough, it's an anti-W song.

Was her beef about the war in Iraq ? Nope. Apparently she thinks GWB is more anti-Gay than Putin. I'm like , what the hell did Bush do that pissed her off so much concerning gays ? Putin, I'd get. But W ?

This is where I totally break w/ actors and entertainers, when they go all autistic screeching over the most imperceptible things, or worse, things they totally made up in their head. The hyper over reaction stuff really annoys me. There are actual things to be angry about, but because W was a Republican and President, doesn't rise to the level of outrage that's anywhere near appropriate.

As Kaylee would say... " It just isn't " .

I never heard of her or anything else she's ever done. I don't know how I even heard of that song, but it was catchy as hell and made me laugh.

I don't think she really wrote it about Bush. Supposedly she said during two performances in the late 2000's that she did, but that might have just been popular culture at the time.

Quote:

Despite its titular reference to the Caped Crusader, according to NME and Rolling Stone magazines the song is a George W. Bush protest.[4][5] At a concert of 2 April 2009 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, Allen stated that the song was about Bush.[4] At a concert in São Paulo, Brazil, Allen stated, "It was originally written about this fucking arsehole who used to be the President of the United States of America. His name is George W. Bush."[6]

The Urban Review states that it was originally inspired by the far-right British National Party, adding Allen now "feels the track is relevant everywhere now so has removed a particular target."[7] At the 2009 Glastonbury Festival prior to performing the song, Allen made reference to the elections to the European parliament that had commenced three weeks earlier in which the British National Party gained their first ever representative seats, citing this as a reason to sing the song.[7]

Although... I do seem to recall a certain promise he made to get re-elected that had to do with making a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Well, he did get re-elected, and that amendment never got close to passing. Which is funny, because at that time Obama and Hillary were firmly AGAINST gay marriage, while Dick Cheney, W's own VP ? ) , was actually for it. Fast forward to right after Obama's re-election, and who was it that told the world the Obama admin was for gay marriage ? It was HIS VP, Joe Biden.

And the world ( and Lily Allen ) sees W as the bad guy here, while Obama and company are freaking saints. And they had nothing to do with gay marriage becoming legal, but hell yeah, they reap all the benefits from the gay mafia.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh. I know. How easily we forget the past.

I had to think for a minute why Lily Allen would have claimed that she wrote that song about Bush. 2004 was a long time ago.

I don't recall actually ever hearing Obama's opinion on it before he was president. There's plenty of videos of Hillary saying she was against it.

Still though, GWB was extremely unpopular before the 2004 vote. He got re-elected on two things; promising to ban gay marriage and a complete overhaul of Social Security. Neither of which he even so much as talked about after he was re-elected.

But I don't think that Allen wrote that song about Bush in the first place. I think she was just saying that because it was almost as popular to bash on GWB in the late 2000's as it is to bash on Trump today.

Unlike Trump, Bush was a terrible president though.

Wow. Angel Has Fallen is coming out 23 August. I guess I don't need to wait until October for another film to watch.

I recall seeing the name, but I didn't realize it was the same franchise as Olympus and London. So I missed this one, on the calendar.

Sorry to return the thread back on topic.

HaHa… don't be sorry. Glad we're back on course.

I need to double check to see what's good this last few months of 2019.

So far, Godzilla vs Kong is tops on my list for 2020. ( I know, that's another thread )

For next year....
Matrix 4. With Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. Not Rihanna replacing Keanu as Neo.

A source close to the project states “Her team are elated and are open to discussions as they see major potential in her being tied to a movie like the Matrix. It’d be a win-win for all.”

I bet that's what they told everybody who was in the recent Men In Black movie.

I know it's what they told Kristianna Loken for her role in Terminator 3. Besides a few roles in some so bad they're good flicks by Uwe Boll, I couldn't tell you anything she's been in since then. Shame too, since she was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.

Aww, geez. I just mentioned Rihanna as a random female black person for a franchise to pivot to. I was not seriously expecting her to be related to the project.

HAHA!!! That... is... HILARIOUS!!!!!

Seriously man, when you said it I had to look it up. As you know, I don't follow much of any of the new stuff at all and barely even watch anything when it comes out anymore. So it was no surprise to me when I found that article after you said something about it.

But what an unexpected punchline for you to come right back and say that it was just an offhanded joke and not something that you already read about.

Did you really, or was that a joke?

I can't imagine you'd be working in the same culture as the good old days. My cousin works there, and god love her, but she's a bleedin' heart white apologist liberal. You'd be better off starting your own magazine, yanno, if you want to actually write funny stuff.

I assume you mean she works in Denver, or wherever they are now.

I was a contributor when it started, in Madison.

Didn't know it started in Madison. She worked in or around Chicago and still does, as far as I know. My aunt and uncle, her parents, have actually been photographed and used as characters in some of their fake stories. They're actually really great people if you don't talk politics with them. The only reason I know how far lefty they are, especially my cousins, is that I hear about the things they post on Facebook from other family members. Nobody should use Facebook.

Her sister, my other cousin, works on Adam Ruins Everything.

That's pretty awesome that you used to work there. Probably back in the days when I first discovered it when I would go downtown Chicago with my friends. Maybe you can go back there and make it funny again.

Ad Astra. Looks like almost a reboot of Space Cowboys, with Sutherland and Jones. With Garner passed, maybe Pitt takes his place. But no sign o Clint.

Plus Liv Tyler from Armageddon, Ruth Negga from SHIELD and World War Z

Or it may be reminiscent of Interstellar.

Don't know why I hadn't noticed it before this month.

Coming out 20 September.

Some decent looking films came out this past weekend.

Some decades ago, a writer in Iowa wrote a novel, and was asked to sell the film rights. This was his first time with this, and he hired a lawyer to review the contract offer.
The lawyer indicated the whole thing looked good, except that a sentence should be ammended to say "And sequels". The author complained for years that this was the most stupid waste of $500 he could imagine. This ws in the 1970's, when $500 was real money - and the character in the book died at the end, so there couldn't be any sequel.

About 8 years later, First Blood was screen tested, and the audience hated the death of the protagonist in the film. An alternate ending was re-shot, with the protagonist surviving.

Thus was the introduction to the film world of the prototypical One-Man Super Warrior portrayed as John Rambo. The template upon which all subsequent Hollywood. Superwarriors have been modeled.

Friday was the release of Last Blood.

David Morrell didn't make much fortune off of First Blood, but during the rest of the franchise he hasn't needed to work much. He has mentioned that the lawyer fee was the best $500 he ever spent.

My old man was thinking about seeing Last Blood with my brother this week, but Roper gave it zero stars and he read that Rotten Tomatoes gave it something like 27%. But he said that Roper was whining a lot about the usual SJW bullshit.

So I asked him, was the 27% the audience or the critic score. He said that he thought it was always the audience score when they mention it. I said, probably not, if they're pushing an agenda. He looked it up while we were on the phone and we both got a good laugh when the audience score was 85%.

He's going to go see it.

Screw rotten tomatoes. Make sure everybody you know knows how it works and doesn't just assume things.

Nothing appeals to me to make it to the theaters for the rest of 2019 , that I can tell.

I'll allow myself to be dragged ( maybe ) to Joker / not Joker, what ever the hell that's supposed to be about.

* I see MIDWAY is being remade... with Mandy Moore. Hope that's better than the Pearl Harbor bomb.
