The cartoon Mulan (1998) www.imdb.com/title/tt0120762/
has Eddie Murphy as Mushu the Dragon and many non-Chinese actors.

When Disney made the live action version of Mulan (2020) the actors were Chinese, and no Eddie Murphy, no Mushu. I'm pretty sure Disney was bent to the will of Peking, oops, I mean Beijing.
www.imdb.com/title/tt4566758/

And then there is this complicated rewriting of the cartoon to please Peking (Beijing):

On February 27, 2020, film producer Jason Reed said that Mulan's love interest Captain Li Shang was dropped in response to the "Me Too movement". In his statement, he explained that "having a commanding officer that is also the sexual love interest was very uncomfortable and we didn’t think it was appropriate". The reasoning behind the removal was met with social media backlash from fans of the original movie, and some from the LGBTQ community who cited Shang's supposed bisexual relationship with "Ping". Reed acknowledged that Shang had become a "LGBTQ icon", and was initially surprised by criticism of the character's removal. It was also stated by the producer that Li Shang's character would be split into two new characters, Commander Tung and Chen Honghui.

Yup. That's an issue I'm surprised nobody else has ever brought up on the board or discussed in depth.

Blocking Chinese screenings for Deadpool and Joker didn't seem to hurt them at all, but they could have made a lot more if they weren't blocked there. Then you have other movies which did terribly on top of the fact they didn't get released in China, like Ghostbusters (2016).

The new Disney movie Onward has a one-off reference from a female character about their girlfriend and didn't even get shown in China either. Russia played it, but had that line changed from "girlfriend" to "partner".

Oh... and about Mulan...

Seems that enough wasn't done. SJW idiots here are complaining that Mulan was too white behind the camera.

https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/03/16/disneys-mulan-accused-of-bei
ng-too-white-behind-the-camera
/

For Mulan 2, I suggest that they raise the money and film the production in China if they want to have all Asian people behind the camera and we won't have this problem next time.

Star Wars actually saw an increase from Tuesday to Wednesday. That's something else I've never seen happen before since the deals are on Tuesday night.

Nothing serious, and still a $3 per screen average, but 5% is 5%.

Up from $554 to $582.

It's unclear at this point if it's even going to be in the theaters anymore after this week. Despite all the panic, there are still confirmed numbers coming out of theaters remaining open in the country, although there a seriously tiny amount.

Some studios haven't put their numbers out yet and will do so tomorrow, but the-numbers.com has the current confirmed screens out and it looks like only 5 movies are showing in the entire country so far.

Ouch.

Yup...

And it looks to have been beaten quite a bit by Joker, despite (allegedly) costing 195 Million more to make. (that's a number that was never increased after all the last minute reshoots and editing, so who knows really).

Crazy to think that when you look at the first week numbers for both movies. Rise of Skywalker made just shy of $290 Million compared to Joker's 138 Million.

It shouldn't have even been close, regardless of how bad it was.

And Joker didn't show in theatres in China.

A nation of 1.3 billion.

Hard for me to imagine that SWTROS " made " that much money, to be honest.

Well... and to be fair, it didn't do very well in China at all. It should have though.

It got $20 Million there. Out of $1 Billion+.

The Force Awakens got $120 Million+ out of $2 Billion+

The Last Jedi got $40 Million+ out of $1.3 Billion+

Really... when looking at those numbers, even for Episode VII, it's kind of hard to imagine why Hollywood keeps bending the knee to China and letting the Chinese authorities what they can and can't put in their movies.

Sure... 120 Million is nothing to sneeze at, but not in one instance above was China the top international country that was showing them.

I'm going to assume that if China showed Joker, it would have only added roughly $60 Million to the Worldwide Gross.

But at what cost though?

If they had to water it down to where it wasn't even recognizable just to appease the Chinese Overlords, it probably wouldn't have even made $500 Million Worldwide.

What Would Mal do ?

ok...finally watched it last night in my home theater...honestly the wife said she liked it...and I guess, as Star Wars properties go, it was on par...but saying that isn't a good thing...uninteresting main characters, setup of expectations that something serious was about to happen, and then it never really delivers...waaaay overdone nostaligia...really pushing it to try and find ways to bring old cast in for one last appearance and yet they really didn't do anything of consequence... I've probably just aged out, or have come to enjoy more mature stories like my Firefly and Expanse..the bring more to the plate in a single hour epi than the star wars franchise can bring in 3 connected movies...anyway..all done..can't imagine rewatching any of the "Rey" trilogy..just like I haven't gone back.. EVER...for a second helping of the "Natalie Portman can't act" trilogy.

forever grateful for the very first movie that came along at a time when we were starved for anything space-fi.

Can't argue that. I have zero issues with them making alternate versions for China or any other place that they want to make money. The worry, of course, is that as Six Sigma style practices invade every industry and everything becomes homogenized. Eventually, it will not be profitable to make alternate versions for everybody and like everything else in life, things we watch will become "dumbed down" to the lowest common denominator and we'll be stuck watching things that were made for China.

Hard to ever say "it's official" because numbers seem to be able to be added and taken away from the tally at whim with no explanation, but these numbers have not changed for a while.

It looks like Joker wins.

Joker Total Worldwide Box Office: $1,074,251,311

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Joker-(2019)#tab=box-office

Rise of Skywalker Total Worldwide Box Office: $1,074,144,248

9)#tab=box-office

What a close race. Those numbers are insane.

If it hadn't been so terrible and got the repeat viewings expected from a Star Wars property, it would have beaten Joker a month before everything was shut down, so I'm not going to give it an asterisk.

Looks like this somehow even went under the YouTube nerd's radar with everything else going on. I wonder if anybody is ever going to catch it and report on it. Don't hold your breath for anybody in the Legacy and Access Media to ever let you know it happened.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Is it just me, or have most of them become extremely annoying?

I've actually unsubbed and even blocked the content from a lot of them already after letting them know that they had better diversify their topics or look forward to their 15 minutes of fame running out.

I still watch The Quartering on occasion and heckle him for his sponsors, but I've already blocked Geeks and Gamers and Nerdrotic among a few others. At some point they start sounding just as bad as the people they're criticizing.

Something especially rubs me the wrong way about that Nerdrotic guy. I didn't really notice it until I saw a livestream of his that was just awful. The dude is a huge dick, especially when you see him talk to people on a full live stream that he doesn't edit. Once you've seen that, it's hard not to notice it on all of his videos.

I much prefer channels like RedLetterMedia, Cinema Snob, Nostalgia Critic, FanboyFlicks, SomeOrdinaryGamers, Ryan George, and a few others that aren't popping up in my head. They love giving shit, but they're much more even handed about it so they don't come off as whiny little bitches living in their mom's basement.

I prefer the "South Park" mentality. Give everybody shit, because everybody deserves getting shit.

I agree BUT, if you want to know what the nerds are thinking and saying, those are the nerds. They've become the voices of the fandom, we need nerds like them to stand up to the industry. Love or hate Doomcock, he's a fan like us, and like us, he's pissed. You have to admit, they've gotten the industries attention, REVENGE OF THE NERDS!!

Sure... I won't argue that.

I'm just not going to watch it anymore either. These people are making a ton of money themselves now. I'm sure they've got a built in audience that's going to watch every single video they put out, regardless of what my opinion is. But I've only got enough time in my life to watch videos about what a garbage human being Brie Larson is, and I've met my quota for my lifetime on that topic. I'm glad that Jeremy from TheQuartering was able to buy a his Brie Shed that is larger than a few of the apartments I used to rent out back of his giant house though.

Just when I thought this thread would just curl up and die...there's a rift between Disney CEO Lord Iger and Lucasfilm. Turns out the that dictator Kennedy has OK'd a new STAR WARS series that takes place in an alternate time line that stars an all female cast run by a woman who was Harvey Weinstein's assistant who is a douche, she has already deleted a bunch of tweets. You'll have to go to YOUTUBE for details because the entertainment press has been ignoring this story.

$10 sez Disney pulls the plug on it, I know they're saying it's green lit but I bet they come up with an excuse. Something like, they need the money to get all the rats out of Disneyland, did ya hear about that? Word is Disneyland in C.A. is infested with rats.
