There has obviously been a dearth of films in cinema this year.

Some say Cinema may never recover.

But what have you found this year? Any overlooked gems from past years that you found this year? Have you gained greater appreciation for what decent films we had in some of the recent years?

Personally, my DVD players hasn't been very active, and I've binged on some TV shows which I missed or avoided when they were originallly broadcast.

What about you? Did you find new favorites?

Warner Bros. decided every movie they're putting out next year will be on HBO Max from day one. They believe that movie theaters are dead and are happy to be the company that puts the final nail in that coffin.

Huge payoff for them if it works, but they're hemorrhaging money right now and if their plan or 2021 in general doesn't work out the way they think it will they're going to be in a lot of trouble.

Are people going to want to sign up for yet another streaming service?

Have you seen Under the Silver Lake yet? The Hunt? Both were really good.

I also liked an independent flick called Space Cop, made by the guys from RedLetterMedia on YouTube, but I have a hard time recommending that movie to people unless they already watch and enjoy RLM content.

What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world? :)

I have seen those, except probably 4 that I don't want to. Some I've seen several times. None I want to see again soon.

Have you seen Nobody? That is quite good.

For rewatching, I'd go with Rogue One, Wind River, Edge of Tomorrow, Arrival, King Arthur, Galaxy Quest.

Who can make indie films or tv shows or movies

We've got a Godzilla-KingKong thing, a video game 'Mortal Kombat' made into a movie and a Japanese anime dominating Global Box Office
Japan animation Demonslayer

In India perhaps Bollywood might suffer with this Corona virus, or Covid lockdown thing
France and Brazil are also big film producers and i believe they are also suffering with how to deal with the virus.
Swedish cinema came into prominence in the 1960s maybe back in the fifties, its still hanging in there but I think they also have issues since tyhe Swedish government refused any lockdown. It will be interesting to see how the Global Film industry as a whole recovers.

I don't think I would re-watch Arrival JEWELSTAITEFAN, I really enjoyed it as a film but it feels almost like one of those murder mystery puzzle films where I think knowing the ending and twist makes it less re-watchable. There are scenes and moments and sound fx and a musical sound track that's amazing, its just how the film unfolds and knowing how it unfolds makes it less impactful, the subject amtter is great aliens invaders from space, the truly human question, it's not a movie about cosmic invader aliens. In this movie there are moments I would re-watch for their merit as writing or great film making
but I'm not sure would watch the film in its entire again.

The film Wind River sounds good I might give it a watch its one of those that slipped under the radar for me, I guess with all the Avengers, Disney Pixar, Justice League and WonderWoman and political season stuff it managed to slip past me.

Is Hollywood done? the global Hollyweird box office has dropped by billions of dollars, the Popstars and people who made Rock Concerts are out of a job

Did Asia win??

Not all American brands are done, HBO, netflix, hulu, the Disney plus YouTube TV the Microsoft Xbox, they make cash, the vax is sold, the booze is still sold, the weed dealer still gets a way to sell his stuff, the video game brands are making money.

maybe not all Asia will win, Bollywood will suffer while India is impacted by the virus

The Cinema itself, I think its coming back kind of slowly in NZ, South Korea, Australia, without the China numbers there would be no sales. Avatar the movie came out in 2009 now its had a 2021 Re-release in China, knocking the Avengers box Office record down and reclaiming the top, now there is a small movie Wales maybe English British Welsh about some Horse. The is some Danish Denmark thing 'Riders of Justice' I think it might be an action comedy. There are big blockbuster type films still out there waiting, the Bonds, the Scifi Fantasy stuff, the WB DCs and the Disney Marvels but they are keeping it on hold, weird cartoonish stuff and Asian stuff like video games are now made into movies.

Godzilla and DonkeyKong are making money or was it the King Kong brand WB owned?
I've no idea when the next Superman thing will come out but the new Wonder Woman flopped, the new Wnder Woman lost $101 in milliion of Dollars, sometimes they make some money back but a big movie like this can cost over 200+ Million $ to make
The Aussie and China is still going to the Cinema but they wont sell that many tickets in Aus or China

Where is our WB for building that Drive-in theater?

I'm looking at the Cinema numbers across the world and most of it is Asia-Pacific. 'Detective Chinatown 3' I never heard of it, the Actors seem to be Japan, HongKong, Chinese or Japanese, there is that Thailand kickboxer guy Tony Jaa in it but I never heard of the film before. A movie The Dry loos like it was filmed by the Aussies, a 2020 Australian mystery drama thriller film. There is a film Nuevo orden....probably New-World-Order stuff, it seems to mix a bunch of real life Venezuela BLM Antifa stuff into a near future horror fantasy stoty, it is a 2020 Mexican-French art film thriller, the NewOrder it takes place in a dystopian near future. Hollywood is making nothing, is this not a good opportunity for America's smaller Indie Studios to pop up in other parts of America? there are movies in Aus box office and other places called 'Impasse' it seems to be about the Dynasty Emperor Times, the rise of Communism and the Japanese Occupation, Video Game type stuff is selling in the cinema across the world and more Japanese animated cartoons are sold as material for box office movies.

I'm looking at the world wide cinema, we still have Godzillia Donkey Kong King Kong thing, some anime manga thing, Mortal Kombat doing thwe rounds for over 2 months 8 weeks + or maybe more, Demon Slayer a Japan cartoon is making money while out for almost half a year 20 weeks + or 150 days, Australia is showing The Hobbit movies again, Europe has old Italian films like Nuovo Cinema Paradiso in its cinemas that remained open. Cruella i guess a spin off on 101 Dalmations is maybe going to break even it has made $132 million world wide but could have cost 100+ Million mayeb 150 million to produce, box office is now highly dependent on cinema markets like Aus, S.Korea, Russia, Brazil, France, Canada, China etc

Also showing Top Gun, while Maverick is not due until November.

It looks like Black widow made $80m in the USA and another $70m Global
not sure if they lost money but I don't think they will lose, they will make profit but... it wont be the same I remember the days when people would be packed in like sardines and cinemas around the world would be full but now a lot of theatre are closed
...maybe they should have brought this movie out a few years back

its projected to make money

https://www.the-numbers.com/international-charts-overview

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/world/

Godzillia made millions, the Detective Chinatown 3 a crime drama comedy movie in Tokyo made millions, another Fast and Furious Car Thriller Driving Action movie made millions, another from Asia 'Hi Mom' a Chinese movie Nihao, LiHuanying made hundreds of milions, sequels to the Quiet Place and the Conjuring made millions but these movies have been out for weeks upon weeks, months without contest

Black Widow is released during a Covid year, it is already in the top 10 for 2021 Worldwide Box Office

but in thoery if you released a good movie for the Dutch and everyone going to cinema in Holland bought tickets to the movie
your film in the Holland film industry could outsell Marvel's biggest box office movie

I don't think Hollywood is ever coming back, better tax breaks are offered in Hawaii in Canada in Oklahoma, they help productions film and movies get produced in Massachusetts and Georgia, the Germans, aussies, Japanese and S.Koreans have good Animation support and Film Incentives, some give granst to arts that employ people, rebates and tax credits, even before all this Weinstein scandal stuff broke and rules and regulation with Corona lockdowns Hollywood California has just become too expensive.
Texas straight up offers its writers and actors and film makers grants to make films.

Are the Dutch in Europe back to normal? the Holland Netherlands box office is coming in close to $100,000,000 box office again
However another Corona virus strain and Lockdown would kill the box office.
Europe will continue making Indie films but the big Production will now probably be spread all across the world from places like Austin Texas to China/Asia.

Do we even have a Marvel's Eternals thread???

It's a strange case. It was hovering around 60% critics score on RT for a week or so and just today went to 49% rotten after a two day slide.

Also, just today, audience score has started to be tabulated and it's in the mid-80's.

That alone isn't strange. Woke critics often are out of touch with what people actually think.

But this movie is being marketed as a wokefest. Nobody knows who the Eternals are, or what the movie is about, but they've all heard non-stop about how glorious and diverse the cast are.

Is Disney/Marvel trying to game the system and subvert expectations in real life? They have to know by now that if critics hate a movie there is a very good chance that people will turn out to see it. Are they paying critics to make this film rotten?

Maybe it's a desperation move?

It's already not going to be shown anywhere in China and most of the Middle Eastern countries.

Looks like Disney is going to bend the knee and remove the man-on-man kiss scene from the Eternals for the Muslim countries because they know they're going to hemorrhage money on this dumpster fire. This coming after they said a week ago they were refusing to do so.

The Rotten Tomatoes audience score is sus as hell. Half the comments look like a YouTube spambot wrote them. There's no way that the audience is enjoying this.

Critics score is down to 48% with the "Top Critics" filter dropping it to 40%.

Not as good as Deadpool, but the first one was probably better than Free Guy. The 2nd one wasn't as good, but it was about what you could hope for in a sequel.

I would have seen it in the theater had I gone to visit this time. I'll watch it when it's out on video.

I did watch the 2016 version, and it wasn't nearly as bad as a lot of people said it was. It just wasn't good either. If it weren't for all of the gross publicity surrounding it for so long, I don't think anybody would even remember it even happened anymore.

The new one sounds like it was at least a step in the right direction, but I think they probably missed the mark and made it geared toward kids with just enough nostalgia in it to be something that adults can watch with their kids.

I think people forget that the original Ghostbusters wasn't a kid's movie at all, especially by mid-80's standards. It's hard to imagine that after the cartoon became so popular and the remake was so watered down from the original.

It was really a horror movie first, with adult humor 2nd. Most of the jokes went over kids heads when the watched it in the 80's, and it starred some of the edgiest comics of the times, with one of them getting a blowjob from a ghost in between scenes where he was smoking cigarettes.

It seemed, at least to me, that I was getting away with something when I watched it at 6 or 7 years old. I doubt very much that any kid who watches Afterlife is going to have that same feeling.

But at least I don't hear anybody claiming it's woke, despite the lead kid being a girl.

I don't care what anybody says... Super Mario Bros. was a great flick.

Young me didn't appreciate it and knew that it hardly had anything to do with the source material, but when you look back at the early Mario games you have to admit it's not like they had a lot of source material to work with.

And the story behind the movie is probably even more interesting than the movie was itself.

I think a lot of other studios will be forced to admit failure
even Netflix suffers

Dr. Strange is the only Disney Marvel movie I'm interested in seeing that's slated.

And that's despite the fact that the lead actor should keep his mouth shut and his politics to himself.

I'm always down for a little bit of Lovecraftian horror.

I won't take mine with a slice of woke though, so Disney better not fuck it up.

Never mind. They're needlessly shoving ultra-woke multi-time comic book failure America Chavez in the Multiverse of Madness, as well as a gay scene that is going to get it banned from middle eastern countries since all eyes are on Disney by the woketards after the Florida debacle and they just can't silently remove the scene like they would have a few years ago.

Don't nobody give any hate to the actress. She's getting paid. Good for her.

Marvel has run its course in the movies. They should take a 10 year break or so.

Elizabeth Olsen did incredibly well in the fantastic film Wind River. After casting, filming, editing, and production was complete, distribution rights were purchased by Lionsgate, and therefore it was blacklisted with Me Too against Harvey Weinstein. A victim of early wokism.
Now her film Dr. Strange is injected with wokism in the film, so she is victim again through no fault of her own, with no control over it.
She just cannot win.

Well she's not the actress I was referring to when I said that people shouldn't throw any shade at her for the role. I was referring to Xochitl Gomez who plays America Chavez.

I know nothing about Elizabeth Olsen. That's probably a good thing, because usually when these Hollywood types end up on my radar it's because they're awful people.

If she's not woke herself, she's always free to follow Gina Carano's lead and help put an end to the bullshit. People would actively go to see things she was in then.

Not a chance in hell I'll be seeing her in the new Dr. Strange though.

Hollywood is over and its not just Covid, you can also thank the who Tranny SJW Political Woke Social Justice weirdo politics agenda, why does some tranny African islamic gay homosexual show up to play a role in some old peroid piece with people fighting with swords in the North of France and old medieval castles of South of England...what is King Arthur doing with a Gay Black Transexual!?? the Hollywood gay mafia seems to be sick in the head and intent on destroying itself.

Top Gun was a freak in the overall numbers, it broke a larger trend it made big bucks in a landscape that was broken.

There were difficult long sharp recessions before and economic declines of the 70s and 1980s, maybe a 100 films released or a few dozen films released for movie goers in cinema. I think we will return or have already returned to this era.

If you think about it from the 1990s to 2020 there were hundreds upon hundreds of movies were released each year, big companies like Warner Bros DC, Sony, Marvel Disney, Fox, MGM they wanted their hit a big Spiderman, Avatar, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Avengers, Titanic.

At any one year everyone is in full contest, at 1 year it was a show down of hollywood hits, lots of films were in contest...there was a number 1 spot to be one in the summer season, they had two weeks to get in and make their money and they might get knocked out early if another blockbuster was in the competition Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, Armageddon, There's Something About Mary, Deep Impact, Godzilla, Rush Hour, A Bug's Life, Mulan, Lethal Weapon remake, The Mask of Zorro, The Truman Show. In year 2002 Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Star Wars, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Lord of the Rings, Austin Powers, Men in Black, Ice Age, a Bond remake, Minority Report all in contest for that number 1 spot.

A film could be an original or a remake, but they did not self sabotage by Woke SJW politics.

In year 2006 an X-Men movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, a Superman remake Superman Returns, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Cars, The Da Vinci Code, Ice Age, Happy Feet, a Bond Remake, Mission Impossible, Night at the Museum all in contest.

In Year 2012 The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hunger Games, Another 007 Bond Skyfall, The Twilight Saga, The Hobbit, Ted, Wreck-It Ralph, Hotel Transylvania...so many others.

They did this contest at the box office 2019 and they did this contest at the tv shows right up until year 2019.

Today the United States is back 'Top Gun' made cash, USA is back as a box office almost...but not really it will never be as big and epic never the same as it was. Europe and Brazil and South Africa and Japan and Australia seem to stumble along, not the same box office numbers, Russia is probably a banned market with all the war and invasion news. There are 'growing' markets like Egypt, Iran, Turkey, India and China still is a place to make big money in box office but none of these places want any of that transexual woke multi ethnic multi cultural homosexual gay lesbian Antifa Tranny stuff that Hollyweird keeps trying to force into its film.

Hollyweird or Tinseltown is finally over

and maybe that is good because now America can go back to making good interesting Low Budget indie movies.

I'm okay with that. But I'm also okay with Hollywood getting better and making good movies again. I'd never thought about the quantity much until you just mentioned it. There IS a whole lot of movies being released these days, isn't there? Add straight to streaming and Red Box and you've got twice or three times as many.

The recession is a good thing. It will end up putting an end to the woke bullshit, tranny or otherwise. When people had enough money that they didn't even care that they were subscribed to half a dozen streaming services that they hardly if ever watched and never before bothered cancelling, it gave the signal that people were willing to pay for it. When the DOW just kept rising and rising and the valuations of these corporations pushing the agendas kept ballooning despite nobody going to see their woke flops, they were emboldened to keep putting them out.

The party is over. A lot of people are about to be fired... those that haven't been already in the last year. And the adult day care culture they called their jobs is going to be Six Sigma'd to oblivion just like every normal job out there already has.

Hopefully they fire the right people though. For our sake and for theirs.

When Disney gets down to $10 per share I'm going all in on it.

Don't understand why anybody is considering this good news.

Sure, he made Guardians of the Galaxy, which is one of the few palatable Comic Book movies out there, but he's just a woke piece of trash and just another part of the current slew of medium-talents running franchises that are way out of their league.

James Gunn is one on a very long list of Hollywood employees that shouldn't hold any job that don't require them to ask "would you like fries with that".

ALSO: Bob Iger coming back to Disney is terrible news. Not that Chapek was much better, but Iger is the one responsible for destroying all your beloved franchises and Chapek's failures were mostly just him holding the bag.

Stop bringing these people back. Fire all of them or go broke.

What Would Mal do ?

so, for me and the wife, it's been a complete lack of trust in expectations of movies that has kept us from going to the theater.

She particularly enjoys the date experience.

But at $70 for tkts and popcorn We have very few movies that we trust to deliver.

I honestly have cranked up probably 15 movies this season at home that i couldn't get 20 minutes into and just turned em off...even if I rented them...

Disenchanted
Thor Love and....

etc.

if anything I felt bad and embarrassed for some of the actors who in the past have delivered good product and are obviously being directed so very badly.

had we set aside the time, made a date, paid the $ and settled in at the theater.. I woulda been really pissed at the tripe they are producing

I'm sure a lot of that is lack in trust of critics as well.

They're all in on the grift, so how are you supposed to even know what you might want to see?

Not everything out there is total trash.

But yeah, I think a lot of folk are done gambling away good money on what is probably going to be regrets. Especially in this economy.

I don't think I'd be too excited about a new D&D movie.

Wizards of the Coast just got railed for something they just did to aleniate and piss off not only long-time D&D fans, but authors and creators of some of the many scenarios dating back to the 80's. I'd tell you more than that, but aside from some PC based video games I enjoyed as a child I don't know much about D&D.

But even before woke was a pejorative, the D&D movie that did come out was a dumpster fire, save for Jeremy Iron's hamming it up.
