M3GAN is the latest in a long line of horror comedies that continue a promising trend for the genre. M3GAN is directed by Gerard Johnstone from a script from Akela Cooper. The story was conceived of by Cooper alongside horror veteran James Wan and tells the tale of M3GAN, an artificially intelligent doll who becomes attached to her creator's orphaned niece, becoming hostile to anyone that comes between her and her newfound family.

As with most horror films of recent years, M3GAN was produced by Blumhouse productions. The film's initial trailers, and usually unpromising January release, caused many to believe the M3GAN would not be the best film in terms of quality. However, initial reactions and reviews for the film prove that M3GAN is only continuing a very promising trend in recent years for horror movies.

Looks quite interesting. Is it possible that Hollywoke is finally finding a way of Making Horror Great Again?

For the record, this Blumhouse indie production cost a mere $12 Million to produce, and has already dethroned Avatar 2 for the number 1 spot in Avatar 2's 3rd Friday Domestically, raking in nearly $12 Million itself on opening night.

The task assigned to M3gan’s titular robot is an impossible one for most flesh-and-blood adults: how to help a child navigate a horrible trauma. As Cady’s parents are telling her to get off her iPad, and then squabbling over who’s meant to be enforcing the limits on screen time, the car is hit by a truck, and both parents are killed. That leaves Cady to live with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams), who designs toys for children but has no idea how to fit such a child into her life. Gemma’s solution is to combine the problem of figuring out how to care for Cady with the biggest hurdle she’s facing at work: designing the next-gen successor to Purrpetual Pets, an AI-powered companion. That’s M3gan, who looks like a 4-foot-tall American Girl doll and whose only directive is to shield Cady from “physical and emotional harm.”

The problem is that shielding a child from all harm is, as any parent can tell you, not only impossible but undesirable. Obviously you don’t want your children to get hit by a car or humiliated by a bully, but you do want to expose them to “natural consequences,” the benign-but-not-too benign outcomes that happen when you simply don’t interfere. You can warn a child a million times not to touch a hot pot, but it only takes doing it once for the lesson to sink in. Tell them the family dog went to live on a nice farm upstate and you may spare them some anguish, but you’ve also missed an opportunity to teach them two invaluable lessons: one, that everything dies, and two, that you’ll tell them the truth even when it’s hard.

M3gan doesn’t have that perspective, in part because she’s a prototype rushed into beta testing so that Gemma, whose tech-bro boss doesn’t approve of time off for parenting, doesn’t fire her. When a therapist tries to help Cady work through the grief of her parents’ death, all the M3gan robot sees is a woman who’s made a little girl cry — and she does not approve. The robot’s job isn’t to foster psychological healing, it’s just to keep Cady’s attention elsewhere, away from the sad things. As one of Gemma’s coworkers puts it, “She’s not a solution. She’s just a distraction.”

M3gan presents itself as yet another cautionary tale about the dangers of artificial intelligence: What if we give a machine the power to learn with no moral or ethical guidance, except to protect one creature at the expense of all others? But it’s really much simpler than that. M3gan doesn’t turn out to be a freaky supergenius. As one of Gemma’s fellow coders points out, most of her verbal responses are just spruced-up word salad. She knows that children are soothed by lullabies, but she thinks that the ideal song to dry an 8-year-old’s tears is Sia’s “Titanium.” She’s an illustration of the difference between information and knowledge, and knowledge and wisdom.

In a sense, M3gan’s real monster is the little girl Cady, whose uncontrolled emotions are linked to a technology with no means of tempering them. Someone once said that if looks could kill, every child would be a murderer, and M3gan makes that insight concrete. Like the devices in our hands, the robot’s only task is to serve its user’s immediate needs—to pump out constant stimulation and to learn with every input how to better occupy our minds. A parent’s ultimate goal is to teach children to live without them, but the technologies we’ve designed are meant to never let us turn them off.

6ix, M3GAN is the Joker personality downloaded into a fembot.

The reality of late-stage capitalism can be tough for anyone; for all four feet of M3GAN, it might be even worse. She’s a boundless intellect inside a nearly indestructible body, coded too hastily to have been given a moral compass. At the core of it, she’s understood by everyone except Cady as a commodity, not a being in her own right. So yes, becoming a smart-ass is only natural, even if murder is a bit harsh. We’re all going down with the ship that is the 21st century, passing the time with a few TikTok dances along the way. This killer doll can teach us a few.

One of the marks of a good scary movie is the irresistible urge to identify with the killer. M3GAN certainly doesn’t make it tough to see its villain as an extension of our collective id, considering the people she offs are so cartoonishly evil. But the movie succeeds in updating the formula for a fresh audience. M3GAN piqued the interest of a young (and extremely online) fanbase with her studio’s canny marketing strategy; in theaters, she’s more than delivering on both the snark and the dancing. She’s a bitchy little doll, but she’s our bitchy little doll, you know?

None of this is to take M3GAN more seriously than it takes itself. (Again, this movie includes a cover of a David Guetta song.) Ask anyone why they love the robot and they’ll probably give you a normal, non-essay answer like, “She dances!” It’s really not that deep — even if M3GAN is a punch line to a joke that’s a touch more personal than we’d like to admit.

M3gan is about how scary a tween girl can be

There are few things scarier than girls who know too much.

My favorite way to terrorize my former coworker and current friend is by asking her what will happen when her two daughters — 7 and 4 (their ages, not their names) — eventually become pre-teens.

“Are you dreading it?” I texted her over the holidays, my first instinct after receiving her holiday card. In the photos everyone is smiling, having a fantastic time.

“1000 percent,” she wrote back.

Speaking as a former child and person of eighth grade experience, her fear is warranted. Tantrums, mood swings, and bad behavior all get bigger (and worse) when kids become 5-foot sentient beings. Making everything more terrible, kids are also surrounded by other kids, all of whom are testing the new limits of their own autonomy.

And at that age, I did not fear death or injury the way I did the hot glare from a trio of preternaturally cool girl best friends in my Catholic grade school (I’m not going to name those girls because maybe deep down I’m still terrified of them).

Those girls were my M3gan.

On the surface, M3gan is a horror movie about a murderous, rogue AI, but it’s also an hour-and-30-minute camp meditation about how a pretty white girl best friend can be one of the most terrifying things in American life.

While M3gan — a fancy little robot built to be the best friend of preteen Cady (Violet McGraw) — is indeed capable of homicide, the scariest thing about her is that M3gan has, in a very short time, learned how the world works — that violent boys won’t discipline themselves and that girls who get too smart get silenced. M3gan knows more about the world than the adults who created her want her to, and that’s a profoundly scary thing.

What do Joker and M3GAN have in common besides a large number of murders? In both, the audience gets to see the consequences of goal-seeking for fame/adoration/pleasure. At least Joker and M3GAN weren't lusty, gluttonous, greedy, or covetous.

Fundamentally, you are a caricature. Hollywood is criticized for lazy tropes but the World’s two main antagonists right now are a former KGB agent (Putin) with a penchant for poisoning and an emerald mine heir (Musk) who wants to live on Mars. If these were villains in James Bond movies they’d be dismissed as caricatures.

A former Computer Science Professor at the University of Texas (Austin) writes a Movie Review of M3GAN:

I chose this movie for, you know, work purposes. Research for my safety job at OpenAI.

1. I'm now working at one of the world's leading AI companies,

2. that company has already created ChatGPT, an AI with a good fraction of the fantastical verbal abilities shown by M3GAN in the movie,

3. that AI will gain many of the remaining abilities in years rather than decades, and

4. my job this year — supposedly! — is to think about how to prevent this sort of AI from wreaking havoc on the world.

Clearly, the real question is: what insights if any, can we take from this movie about AI safety?

I found the first 80% of the film to be thought-provoking about at least one AI safety question, and a mind-bogglingly near-term one: namely, what will happen to children as they increasingly grow up with powerful AIs as companions?

But then there’s the last 20% of the movie, where it abandons its own logic, as the robot goes berserk and resists her own shutdown by trying to kill basically everyone in sight — including, at the very end, Cady herself. The best I can say about the ending is that it’s knowing and campy. You can imagine the scriptwriters sighing to themselves, like, “OK, the focus groups demanded to see the robot go on a senseless killing spree … so I guess a senseless killing spree is exactly what we give them.”

I confess: when my kids battle each other, throw monster tantrums, refuse to eat dinner or bathe or go to bed, angrily demand second and third desserts and to be carried rather than walk, run to their rooms and lock the doors … when they do such things almost daily (which they do), I easily have thoughts like, I would totally buy a M3GAN or two for our house … yes, even having seen the movie! I mean, the minute I’m satisfied that they’ve mostly fixed the bug that causes the murder-rampages, I will order that frigging bot on Amazon with next-day delivery.

Don't worry. You don't need to have a murderous AI inside your house to let AI ruin your life. Anyone with cell phones and speaker do-dads making their lives easier are being spied on and having all of their conversations catalogued for future use.

Maybe they'll even use an AI that decides who is going to live or die based off of all that collected data when the Super Villians at the WEF pull the trigger on whatever bombs they've set to wipe out half the world population.

Phenomenal show. I was hooked on it from the first Sand King's episode, and have good memories of watching it with my dad and my brothers every week.

I only saw one episode of any recent Twilight Zone called "You Might Also Like", which was a sequel to "To Serve Man" from the original series. It was actually pretty good.

I enjoyed the 80's version of Twilight Zone when I was a kid, and several of those episodes terrified me at the time. It was pretty campy though watching any of them now.

So I did actually watch it.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!:

It was pretty cut-n-paste, but I enjoyed it. I must have called what was going to happen at least 10 times during the flick, so I didn't find any surprises at all, other than the fact a whole lot less people died than I thought were going to.

I did find a LOT of humor in the scene when they were trying to take the wires off of her head to stop her. The second he pulled the last wire off and she grabbed the dude by the neck I yelled out "I'M WIRELESS, BITCH!!!"

I mean... Come'on man! You didn't know about her wireless capabilities when you've been part of a team of three people working on her for a year in secret???

If you can suspend your disbelief for how certain things need to happen in the movie to move the plot along, you should have a good time watching it. I didn't think any of it was don't-turn-the-lights-out-scary, but I probably would have been almost as scared of M3GAN as I was of Chucky when I was a kid.

To me the most terrifying thing about the movie is just the way technology is headed and how kids are growing up with all this shit that none of us adults were glued to, and the idea that kids could end up with emotional bonds to technology that are stronger than to their own family and the betrayal that could lead to.

Overall it was very derivative of a lot of other things I've seen in the past, but it was done well and the acting was good enough. Whoever wrote this was definitely a fan of The Outer Limits and saw the Tom Arnold episode, and this was a nice modernization of that episode.

Nice nod to O/L. Catherine Mary Stewart was the mom in that episode. She still looks great.

I really need to re-watch O/L at some point.

Yeah. CMS was also on and episode of a TV show called Limitless in 2015.

Talk about sending mixed signals.
