This was a really good episode, Inara's little fling aside (Something I could have done without). I liked the confrontation between Wash and Mal, that was a good plot to play off of. It's good to see Wash getting some lines (And back bone).

River kicks butt!!! That scene where she runs out and shoots the bad guys was great! She needed some depth to her character. I have a feeling things are going to be very different between her and Kaylee from now on.

Jayne: Time for some thrilling heroics.

Wash: Every man there go back inside or we will blow a new crater in this little moon.

River needed more depth? I have thought she's one of the deepest characters on the show so far. Jayne is probably the only character that sparked more debate, and that is probably because he's so muscley.

So, when you say you could have done without the Inara "fling", is that because you thought it was poorly done, not necessary to the episode and character development, or just not liking anything homosexual? I'm curious, because there's been a lot of flack elsewhere that came strictly from a place of homophobia. I don't want to reject what you've said out of hand if it comes from some other place.

I made my comment about River because she hasn't been given much of a role other than the psychotic sister who always needs protection. Where as, in Shindig, where she uses a fake accent, and scenes like the one from this episode, show her as being more able.

Inara's scene itself was alright, however she didn't have much screen time in the rest of the episode. She didn't do anything when Mal was kidnapped, and her client wasn't that willing to help out either. It would have been better if she was down on planet, having an excuse not to provide any help in the rescue. Over all I think her sub plot should have been given more attention if they were going to use it. It didn't have enough importance to the rest of the story.

Well she did do something...it just was cut cause the scene didn't work as well as they tought and they had too much time anyway.(Joss said it on the official board)

What was cut? do you know?

I know that they said something about thanking the counselor for use of the equipment to re-attach Mal's ear....

I'd just like to point out one thing, the episode is known as "War Stories" not "War Games." War Stories is a reference to Mal and Zoe's time together in the war, sparking the little spat with Wash. No games involved. And I do think River has plenty of depth. You just have to listen. And psychotic isn't the way to describe her. No psychotic can anaylze a ships entire identification number, commune with cattle, (shoot guns), or skim accents from people's minds like River can. I do have a soft spot for River though so I guess everything I say could be suspect. That's it for now.

A first time viewer of War Stories would note in the opening that both River's tormentors and Niska are possibly both Disciples of Shan Yu.

But I now recall that several times I've wondered something, but always get distracted and forget.
Will Mal learn of Book & Simon's musings? Will he understand that he is being surrogate of River's position when she was at Institute? That is what I keep forgetting to check on.

So, what is Left Over from the Ariel heist is 5 times what they got paid for The Train Job. Not considering all their expenses for that caper. It had seemed that as TTJ was our first episode, the paydays have been winding down. But Ariel was a huge difference.

For some reason, this viewing I notice Mal's performance of pain is the same as when fighting The Operative in Serenity.

2 episodes ago in Safe, the 7th aired episode, we learned that Book isn't exactly who he appears to be. And now we learn he has expert knowledge of weaponry and tracking transport craft, from the scene of abduction.

OK, Mal never learns that Book and Simon were discussing Shan Yu, and Simon or Book never learn of Mal and Niska's exchange. Only the audience knows.

River has been fair quirky up til now, but here she first displays some Violence, and without extensive navel-gazing afterwards. Further exploration of this aspect of her should prove interesting in future episodes. It was good to see her proactive, but Simon remains unaware of this development. I ponder if she could have executed this task prior to her current meds dosage.
After 2 weeks without episodes, this action feels like a treat. And just last ep Mal wrenched Jayne.
