Ok, hello everybody. This is my third post, sorry I forgot to officially introduce myself. I got a question about Serenity/Firefly that you lot might know.

So I heard that the Serenity set was somewhat altered for the movie. Now I noticed that the examination chair in Simon's infirmary is white (instead of red), and that Kaylee's engine room is somewhat smaller (I saw her hammock hanging around in the BDM, but there's nowhere near as big a space as, for instance, we saw in The Message).

Those are the only two I could find. Are there any more, and -if so- what/where are they? Thanks!

MAL
I mean, I knew her clientele was... varied...

WASH
Yeah, but, I mean, you know... damn.

The walls in the cargo bay. There's a different pattern.

"The people who made the show, and the people who saw the show, which is roughly the same number of people, fell in love with it, a little bit too much to let it go, too much to lay down arms when when the battle looked pretty much lost. In Hollywood, people like that are called unrealistic, quixotic, obsessive... In my world, they're called Browncoats."

d'oh! I never even noticed either of those. (??? No hammock in the engine room? She always had her little nook in the corner there. I loved that... :(

Anyways, welcome, Dutchboy ;p Glad to see another new face out here. Keep the faith, spread the word, and know that we'll all holdin' the line, never far from the red button, 'till Mal returns.

The Firefly set was dismantled after the series was canceled. The new Serenity is all new and big budget...that's why it all looks different!

There are a few things left from the old Serenity, like the lockers that used to be in the cockpit are now right behind the cockpit.

I noticed last night that my beloved dining table lamp is missing!

One that I noticed also has to do with the engine room. In "Out of Gas", when Mal is restarting the engine, he has to wind the engine using a large lever on the front of the engine casing. This is not present in the reincarnation of the engine room in "Serenity". You can get a very good look at it during the opening title sequence of the movie when Mal walks into the engine room when the ship is going in to land. The front part of the engine is now just a knob that rotates along with the rest of the engine.

One other thing, though this has nothing to do with the design of the ship but the interior of Serenity is much brighter (ie more light) than in Firefly. The cargo bay in particular seems almost as bright as day.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

One of the most obvious changes that I noticed is the transition from the dining area to the passageways fore and aft. In the series the steps are down into the dining area from both passageways, but in the BDM they are up.

Ha, I just checked, you're right! Can't believe I never noticed that...
I just saw that the couch outside the infirmary is different. It's the same yellow-ish color, but not as big as in the series.

I gather they had to rebuild the ship interior sets from scratch for the movie with only photos of the original and a few salvaged bits and pieces that were left to work with.
Not surprising there are differences, one I noticed was that the forward cargo ramp appeared to be a lot smaller than it was in the series, though overall I think they did a remarkable job of duplicating the original sets.
Now the question is, what happened to the new sets after production of the BDH was finished.
If they were dismantled and put in storage rather than broken up then it might indicate how seriously Universal considers making a sequel.
Anyone know?

Good question. I'd thought I'd read somewhere that Universal had optioned for a few sequels, but of course that doesn't necessarily mean it's anything like a done deal. (Though of course they're going to make a sequel ;p) Be interesting to know what happened to the sets after the movie, though.

Does anyone else think that at the very least the Serenity set would make the shiniest tourist attraction ever? Sort of a Browncoat pilgrimage... ;p

Oh, and on the subject of Serenity looking darker in the movie. I think that was a conscious decision on the part of Joss, but I definately noticed it. That man loves his lighting :) In the series, Serenity feels like home, with the soft warm lighting, etc. BDM, I think they were going for a more tense and desperate feel.

Yes, think of the money Paramount have made over the years with the `Star Trek Experience`.

Also noticed all the nice and shiny plasma screens all over the place instead of the grainy little vid screen in the BDS. Must have been upgraded with the money from the sale of the Lassiter, like the purchase of the hovermule.

Maybe I'm color blind but I remember Mal's bunk being done in shades of tan and brown in the BDS and it seemed dark green and smaller in the BDM. Was it just the lighting or I going crazy?

Actually, I noticed that too, but wasn't sure it was that different from the series. I don't remember the table in Mal's room, either. AND I thought the infirmary was smaller in the BDM, too...

I'm going crazy on spotting comparisons/differences..

Lol All I have to say is Serenity had gotten a make over.

I always thought that the infirmiry HAD no red chairs O_o.

To me the movie looked like they had the blue tinted lighting ...probably fluorescent instead of the yellow lighting like the show for realism. I think the same goes with the set colors and etc (on both lighting techniques).

One of the structural changes I noticed is that there are steps down into the cargo bay from the rear passage (the one that leads to the infirmary/common area).

I always thought that was just weird. I mean, whoever designed the ship for the series, must have had drawings/blueprints lying around for the BDM? And if not, did he/she throw them away or something?
